Natopia (/nəˈtoʊpiə/ nə-TOH-pee-ə; Natspeak: vџV:*_џ), officially the Bovic Empire of the Natopian Nation, is a country comprising the mainland of the continent of Tapfer, Yellow Island, and numerous smaller islands. It has occupied Yellow Island (or Tapfer Minor) for all of its existence. Natopia has territory on Cibola where it shares land borders with Craitland, Calbion, and Tatwinkel; on Apollonia Natopia has borders with Shireroth and Senya; on Benacia Natopia shares a sea border with Sathrati; on Corum Natopia's EEZ borders Çakaristan. Athlon, the seat of the Dozan Bovic Church, is a protected sovereign nation within Natopia's internationally recognized jurisdiction.

With a population over 690 million people, it is among the most populous nations in the world by current estimates. By area, it is the largest country in the southern hemisphere and 2nd or 3rd largest overall. Natopia's capital and largest city is Lindstrom; other major cities include Borders City, Dos Gardenias, Hazelwood, Mehlville, Triegon, Butter Cow City, Redquill, Tiamat, Klaasisitya, Graveacre, Etampes, Blyth, Sileni, and Eadricton. Population density is focused around Borders Bay; the island of Neridia (also known as Istvanistan); and the western coast of Tapfer.

It is not definitively known how or when humans first settled on Tapfer. The prevailing theory proposes that the earliest mass-migration occurred when people migrated to Tapfer from Benacia using former land bridges and short sea-crossings in the Istvanistan-Yardistan island chain, making landfall near present-day Dos Gardenias and then spreading throughout Tapfer. This migration may have begun 65,000 years ago. These early inhabitants, called Paleotapferites, soon diversified into dozens of culturally distinct nations and tribes. On Yellow Island the Andi, Haas, and Mehl tribes eventually combined into the Ziegeish people. The Hazel people have remained a distinct culture. The Neemites are believed to have migrated from Keltia considering their cultural and linguistic similarity to the ancient Karnali people.

The establishment of Natopia as a modern nation can be attributed to Nett Opaegh, a semi-legendary Jasonian. Following the submersion of the Flying Islands into the ocean, Nett Opaegh played a pivotal role in unifying the indigenous population near present-day Lindstrom. Under his leadership, their settlement evolved into a town known as Nett Opaegh's Awe. In time, the followers of Nett Opaegh came to be known as Natopians by the inhabitants of Yellow Island. Between 1440 AN and 1471 AN, Opaegh and his Natopians initiated a campaign of consolidation, utilizing both coercive and diplomatic means. This campaign culminated in the annexation or peaceful incorporation of all tribes inhabiting Yellow Island. Over the subsequent centuries, Natopia expanded its territory, primarily through annexations, diplomatic negotiations, and, most frequently, natural growth surpassing that of its neighbors.

From 1709 AN until 1716 AN, Natopia was divided into Eastern Natopia and Western Natopia. The division of the Natopian Empire commenced in 1707 AN, prompted by Emperor Nathan III's proposal to create two co-equal viceroyalties for improved governance. Eastern Natopia and Western Natopia were established on either side of the River Egale following a national referendum in 1708 AN. The constitutional process that separated the empire into two states concluded in 1709 AN, with Empress Vadoma I ruling Western Natopia. After Nathan III's death in 1716 AN, Empress Vadoma I assumed the throne of Eastern Natopia. The Imperial Proclamation of Unity, also known as the Second Declaration of Lindstrom, marked the end of Natopia's division. Adopted in 1717 AN, the Proclamation dissolved the separate governments of Eastern Natopia and Western Natopia and reunited Natopia under Empress Vadoma I.

Natopia is a unitary plurinational parliamentary constitutional monarchy with considerable discretionary powers reserved for both the Emperor of the Natopians and the Chancellor of Natopia. The Emperor directs foreign policy, serves as commander-in-chief of the military, and performs ceremonial and diplomatic duties in their role as head of state. Legislative authority is exercised by the Frenzy which is presided over by the Chancellor with executive prerogatives over domestic policies. The Emperor and several appointed judges serve as a supreme judicial and constitutional court. The demesnes of Natopia have local autonomy but are bound to national laws. Its age, size, and stability have made a highly developed country with a high-income economy and high development index. Natopia is currently a member of the Micras Treaty Organization, Micras Organisation for Standardisation, Bastion Union, Organisation of Red Symbol Societies, and a founding member of the Raspur Pact.

Natopia began as an offline community of high school friends on August 23, 2002. Continuing into 2003, Natopia claimed territory on Earth and operated as a secessionist micronation for a few years. In 2005, Natopia abandoned secessionism in favor of simulationism, becoming integral participants of the early MicroOlympics, and the International Association. Since then, Natopia has been a primary participant in the Micras community, or Micran Sector.

History

Main article: History of Natopia

Pre-Opaeghian Era

It is not definitively known how or when the Native Tapferites first settled on Tapfer and present-day Natopia. The prevailing historical theories, supported by archaelogical finds and other data, propose that people migrated to Tapfer from Benacia and to Cibola using former land bridges and short sea-crossings in the Istvanistan-Yardistan island chain, and then spread southward throughout Tapfer. This migration may have begun 65,000 years ago. These early inhabitants, called Paleotapferites, soon diversified into dozens of culturally distinct nations and tribes that went on to form nations, found cities, and shape Tapfer.

The Birth of Natopia, Unification Period

The Unification Period of Natopia, marked by the legend of Nett Opaegh and the subsequent establishment of the Natopian state, is a foundational era in the country's history. This period begins after the fall of Jasonia around 1440 AN and extends to the early years of the Natopian Republic following Opaegh's death. The Unification Period was predominantly shaped by the legendary figure Nett Opaegh, who is considered the "father of Natopia" and founder of the Natopian nation. His mythical journey, leadership skills, and technological knowledge, coupled with strategic alliances and military conquests, transformed a collection of tribes into a unified and sophisticated state. This era set the stage for the complex political and cultural landscape that defines modern Natopia.

Legend of Nett Opaegh

Opaegh's Arrival, a painting by Christos Eucalyptos.

Nett Opaegh, the central figure in the Opaeied epic poems, is credited with the founding of Natopia. His journey from a Jasonian settlement across Tapfer to Yellow Island is filled with mythical encounters, including battles with the rock monster Pinax and the bay monster Bora’Derr, and interactions with native peoples like the Klaasiyans and the Mehl. Opaegh's Jasonian technology knowledge and storytelling skills earn him a revered status among the Mehl, leading to the creation of Natopia. Opaegh's technological feats, particularly the elevation of civic buildings, were exaggerated by the Mehl, leading to the legend of a "floating city of the clouds." These achievements, however, were likely more modest. His leadership and organization of the Mehl into a sophisticated society, and his appointment as President, mark the beginning of the Natopian Nation in 1451 AN.

Natopia's Formation

Nett Opaegh's leadership heralded the Natopolitan Period, characterized by significant reforms and the establishment of a growing modern Natopian country. He appointed ministers from respected Mehl families and from Tapferite society, fostering a smooth transition of power and acceptance of the new government. The renaming of his citizens from Mehl to Natopians, and the construction of important structures, including the Presidential mansion, set the foundations for modern Natopia. During this time, Natopia faced conflicts with neighboring Mehl tribes in Tapfer, leading to strategic alliances and military engagements. The formation of the Natopian Alliance with the Andi tribe and the eventual subjugation of the Anti-Natopians expanded Natopia's influence. The inclusion of the Haas people and the Martino people further extended Natopian control over strategically important territories. It was in 1469 AN that the Natopian capital, Natopia City, was founded by Nett Opageh and a group of other settlers, architects, and future city residents. The initial capital was modest, but enjoyed a natural deep harbor that facilitated its growth as Natopia's first and largest port.

Early Republic, Birth of Lindstromism

"Oath of the Mehl," Jacques-Louis David

Following Opaegh's death in 1471 AN, Natopia faced a critical succession crisis. This period of uncertainty was resolved through the formation of a triumvirate among key ministers, leading to the First Reorganization. This period led to a transformation that introduced a complex governance structure for the growing country, effectively balancing the diverse powers of various tribal groups within Natopia: Mehl (Natopians), Klaasiyans, Andi, Haas, and the Eastern Martino (Rio Grande). This new system, enshrined in the Early Republic's Constitution, culminated in the formal unification of disparate tribes into the Supreme Sovereign Republic of Natopia. At the forefront of these sweeping changes was Nathan Waffel-Paine, the inaugural Grand Chancellor, who played a pivotal role in embracing and institutionalizing Lindstromism.

Lindstromism, a political philosophy and governance system conceived by Gustav Lindstrom, a political exile from Stormark, rapidly became the bedrock of Natopian culture and politics. Lindstrom, advocating for a unique check on monarchical power, found refuge and fertile ground for his ideas in Natopia. His ideology, quickly adopted by Nathan Waffel-Paine and successive Natopian leaders (especially through the modern Free Juice and Bagels Party, founded in 1492 AN), emphasizes a delicate balance between authority and judicial oversight, aimed at preventing tyrannical rule. The essence of Lindstromism lies in its commitment to safeguarding minority rights and promoting a diverse, multicultural society. This is encapsulated in what became Natopia's motto in 1480 AN, "Peace Through Silent Oppression," which paradoxically underscores the importance of curbing any majority's potential to dominate.

Unification of Yellow Island

"Chow Dhury Dancing Before Nett Opaegh," Gustave Moreau

In the north of then-Natopia (now mostly in the demesne of Ziegeland), the region known as Tas Neemia, inhabited by the Neemites, holds a important position in Natopian history. The Neemites, who revered a deity they referred to as the Butter Cow, believed themselves to be its chosen people. This belief would later lay the foundation for Natopia's native faith, Bovinism, a significant aspect of the nation's cultural and religious landscape.

Nathan Waffel-Paine, serving as Natopia's Grand Chancellor, prioritized the incorporation of Tas Neemia into the burgeoning Natopian Republic. His diplomatic venture to Tas Neemia's capital, later known as Tasneemia City, led to a pivotal meeting with the Neemite leader, Chow Dhury, who would adopt the name Tasneem Chowdhury. Chowdhury's request to join the Natopian Republic was contingent upon her appointment as Prime Minister in Waffel-Paine’s ministry. This agreement not only symbolized the integration of Tas Neemia into Natopia but also marked Chowdhury as a figure emblematic of Natopian determination and commitment to statehood.

East of this region lay the Hazel Woods, an intricate labyrinth of forests and swamps, so dense and complex that even the renowned Nett Opaegh had previously avoided venturing beyond the modern-day Oakham. The establishment of contact with this area was facilitated through naval routes, with vessels navigating the Newport Strait to reach the burgeoning port of Sidewinder, the site of present-day Hazelwood. The indigenous Tapferite Hazel people, known for their shamanistic practices and deep connection with the forest, peacefully assimilated into the Natopian Republic. Their decision was influenced by the realization of being encircled by Natopian forces.

Natopian settlers, colloquially termed forestbaggers, began arriving in significant numbers at Sidewinder, fostering its growth into a major settlement and port. Despite the founding of a second city, Blood Gulch, its development was hindered by the overwhelming popularity and strategic importance of Sidewinder. Consequently, Blood Gulch's significance diminished, while Sidewinder, eventually renamed Hazelwood, flourished as a key urban and economic hub in Natopia. Hazelwood's evolution from a remote port to a major city reflects the broader narrative of Natopian expansion and integration, demonstrating the nation's capacity for incorporating diverse cultures and territories into its fold.

Relationship with Lavalon

Between 1497 AN and 1503 AN, Natopia experienced a slowdown in its development, largely attributed to the significant engagement of its key government figures in the affairs of the neighboring Republic of Lavalon. This period, marked by the revolution in Lavalon and the consequent involvement of Natopian leaders in its governance, led to a diversion of Natopia's resources and political focus. However, this phase also laid the groundwork for a deepening relationship between Natopia and Lavalon, characterized by mutual investments and cultural exchanges. The close relationship between Natopia and Lavalon began to take shape as Natopian leaders, fascinated by Lavalon's revolutionary zeal and potential for growth, started investing in various sectors of the Lavalonian economy. These investments were not limited to financial capital but also included technological and intellectual resources, aiding in the modernization and development of Lavalon's infrastructure, industry, and educational systems. Natopian businesses, enticed by the prospects of a burgeoning market, established operations in Lavalon, leading to a significant increase in bilateral trade. Culturally, the two republics began to influence each other significantly. Educational and cultural exchange programs were initiated, allowing citizens of both nations to study and work in each other's countries. This led to a fusion of cultural elements, with Natopian art, music, and literature finding a receptive audience in Lavalon, and vice versa. The influence of Lavalonian cuisine, particularly its emphasis on local produce and traditional cooking methods, began to be felt in Natopian cities, enriching the culinary landscape.

The arrival of Robert Davis from Gotzborg reinvigorated Natopia's domestic political and economic scene. Davis's influence was instrumental in the development of the Free Juice and Bagels Party as the vanguard party of Natopia, embodying the principles of Lindstromism. His advocacy for a feudal system and the establishment of demesnes as the primary political subdivisions within Natopia reshaped the nation's administrative structure.

Expansion Period

A map of Natopia after the unification of Yellow Island and the start of the Expansion Period of Natopia, 1503 AN.

The Expansion Period of Natopia, starting around 1503 AN, was marked by territorial growth and evolving governance, is a significant era in the nation's history. This period, starting after the establishment of Natopia, saw the expansion across Yellow Island, establishment of overseas colonies for the first time, and Natopia's transition into an imperial republic as well as the continued evolution of Lindstromism through the Free Juice and Bagels Party as the "vanguard party of Natopian expansion and prosperity", as stated by Nathan Waffel-Paine when the party was founded in 1492 AN.

The Expansion Period's beginning is marked by the renaming of Natopia's capital, Natopia City in 1503 AN. After its renaming, a significant amount of development and investment went into building a magnificent capital for the growing nation. By an official declaration from the Grand Chancellor, Natopia City became Lindstrom City, renamed in honor of Gustav Lindstrom and declaring the power and hold of his ideology on Natopia. The growing and developing capital quickly became Natopia's central hub of cultural, economic, and political activity as government agencies and ministries began to settle in their new facilities as the city was rebuilt and dramatically expanded.

In 1506 AN, Natopia underwent a significant administrative restructuring, establishing itself as the Sovereign Imperial Republic of Natopia. Regions like Hazelwood and Tasneemia were organized, absorbing older regions like Hoheit and Frieden. This period saw influential figures like Ryan Grass emerge, who left a lasting impact on Natopian legislative culture. The Natopian Senate, known for its relaxed legislative procedures, was aptly renamed the Legislative Frenzy (later Royal Frenzy), laying the groundwork for the nation's current legislature, the Frenzy. The transformation of the period laid the groundwork for the modern Natopian state and its laws, such as its current Constitution and Caprine Code.

Territorial expansions

Natopia's territorial expansions during this period were ambitious and sought to secure the nation's safety and promote its interests abroad and in Tapfer. After consolidating its hold over Yellow Island, the nation extended its reach to the islands of Micronia and Ferien in 1507 AN, and later to Crystal Island (now Alrodey) in 1508 AN, thus marking its presence on the global stage. Notably, the first colony established in Keltia, New Mehlville, symbolized Natopia's growing imperial aspirations. The annexation of Alrodria further underscored this era's Natopian expansionist policy.

Relations with Lavalon sour

The relationship with Lavalon turned sour in 1508 AN following the collapse of the Venerable Union of Aligned States (VUAS), a union proposed by the Natopian government, then ruled by Nathan Waffel-Paine as Grand Chancellor, to merge Lavalon, Faronia, and New Germany with Natopia. The Supreme Court of Lavalon's rejection of the treaty marked a pivotal moment, transforming the friendly rivalry into bitterness and damaging Natopian pride.

First Natopian Empire

The first Natopian Empire at its formation by Nathan Waffel-Paine, 1509 AN.

Post-VUAS, Natopia underwent a transformative evolution from the Sovereign Imperial Republic of Natopia to the First Natopian Empire in 1509 AN, with Nathan Waffel-Paine ascending as the first King of Natopia, later elevating to the title of Sovereign Natopian Emperor (1509 AN-1533 AN) with the overwhelming support of the Frenzy and a national referendum that supported the move. Overall, the First Natopian Empire period was characterized by strategic geopolitical maneuvering, military expansion, technological advancement, and significant territorial acquisition, all of which were instrumental in establishing Natopia as a dominant imperial power in the region and on the global stage.

During this period, Natopia developed intricate relationships with neighboring states on Tapfer, including Anthelia, Gotzborg, and Alexandria. These interactions were complex, involving both collaborative and competitive elements. While these nations worked together to establish the Novasolum Treaty — a landmark agreement that renamed Tapfer to Novasolum, standardized trade protocols, and strengthened political alliances — Natopia maintained a distinct stance. The empire, prioritizing its sovereignty and traditional values, chose not to participate in this treaty and continued to refer to the region as Tapfer, emphasizing its historical and cultural significance to the Natopian identity.

Concurrently, Natopia joined the first Raspur Pact, aligning itself with prominent nations like Babkha, Jingdao, and others. This alliance was primarily formed in opposition to the Council of Free Nations, a coalition including Alexandria, Stormark, Ashkenatza, and Hamland. This geopolitical maneuvering underlined Natopia's strategic intent to establish itself as a formidable power on the international stage, particularly amidst growing international rivalries. The Novasolum Treaty soon ended after Alexandria summoned aid from Anthelia and Gotzborg during its conflict with the Raspur Pact, which served the interests of Natopia in Tapfer.

This era was also marked by Natopia's heightened focus on military and territorial expansion. The empire invested substantially in developing a formidable military force in the Natopian Defense Force, including the establishment of the Natopian Spacefleet. This investment in spacefaring transportation infrastructure not only bolstered Natopia's defensive capabilities but also positioned it as a leader in extraterrestrial exploration and defense. This military development went hand in hand with Natopia's territorial expansion beyond its traditional borders, notably towards the Egale River and incorporating former Lavalonian territories like Klaasiya (modern-day eastern Sororiya), thus significantly expanding its control and influence. Parallel to its military advancements, Natopia invested heavily in technology, research, manufacturing capacity, and agricultural development. These investments were crucial in ensuring that the empire could sustain its growth and maintain self-sufficiency. The focus on technological and agricultural advancements also facilitated Natopia's long-term goal of becoming a self-reliant and resilient empire capable of withstanding both internal and external challenges.

Collapse of the first Natopian Empire

As Nathan Waffel-Paine, the architect of the first Natopian Empire, advanced in age, signs of the empire's gradual decline began to emerge. By 1533 AN, Waffel-Paine's waning influence and the absence of clear succession plans became increasingly evident. Despite his efforts in establishing the House of Waffel-Paine, hoping to secure a legacy and continuity of leadership, he passed away without explicitly designating a successor. This oversight led to a significant power vacuum and a struggle for succession within the House of Waffel-Paine, as various factions vied for control of the throne that Nathan himself had forged.

The ensuing power struggle and political instability precipitated a shift in governance in Natopia. In response to the escalating crisis and chaos, a new constitution was drafted, leading to the election of Brian Capelle as President of the second Natopian Republic. This marked a decisive return to a republic, effectively ending the first Natopian Empire and abolishing the Natopian Crown, previously established by the Frenzy and affirmed by a public referendum. However, the transition from an empire to a republic was far from smooth. The absence of a strong central authority, coupled with the power vacuum left by Waffel-Paine's death, led to a period of turmoil and disarray. Between 1533 AN and 1540 AN, Natopia descended into a failed state, characterized by internal conflict and warring factions. The once-unified empire fragmented into several successor states, notably Athlon and New South Mehlville in Eura, while New North Mehlville struggled to maintain its identity as a rump Natopian state.

Natopian Dark Ages

The Natopian Dark Ages, a tumultuous period in the nation's history, spanned several years marked by political instability, territorial fragmentation, and cultural transformation. This era followed the collapse of the first Natopian Empire, an entity once emblematic of stability, unity, and strength under the leadership of Nathan Waffel-Paine. The demise of this empire plunged Natopia into a state of disarray, with its territories splintered and its people engulfed in a struggle to redefine their national identity.

Second Natopian Republic

The second Natopian Republic, led by President Brian Capelle, faced immediate challenges as internal conflicts escalated into a civil war. Diverse groups within Natopia, each harboring distinct visions for a reunified nation, clashed in a series of conflicts that further destabilized the region. This civil strife underscored the deep divisions and varied aspirations among the Natopian populace.

Emergence of Successor States

During this chaotic period, most Natopians migrated to Athlon, a former Natopian colony. Athlon, embracing its heritage, saw a resurgence of Bovinism, and it was during this period that it became the main faith of Natopia, as the Natopian culture also saw a marked renaissance during this dark period. This cultural renaissance influenced not only influenced the spiritual landscape of the ailing nation, but also the arts and societal norms within Athlon. Athlon declared its independence in 1533 AN but simultaneously joined the Gralan Confederation as a protectorate, seeking stability and security through regional alliances. Meanwhile, New South Mehlville (NSM), situated on the continent of Eura, established itself as an independent state. Both Athlon and NSM, despite their independence, recognized each other as custodians of Natopian tradition and history.

Cultural and Political Developments

Athlon emerged as a center for cultural, artistic, and religious growth. Nathan Waffel-Paine, holding dual roles as king of Athlon and Pentheros of the Bovic Church, played a pivotal role in shaping the spiritual and cultural direction of the state. Conversely, New South Mehlville focused on developing its military and governmental structures, evolving into a dictatorship under the leadership of Tom Biffo.

New North Mehlville

In an intriguing twist, New North Mehlville, largely overlooked during the initial stages of the Natopian collapse, maintained a semblance of the original Natopian government. This continuity was primarily due to the colonial rulers, who, almost inadvertently, preserved a fragment of the old Natopian state. As a result, New North Mehlville holds a unique place in Natopian history, contributing to its self-perception as one of the oldest continuous sovereign states in Micras, second only to Shireroth.

Restoration Period

Natopia's restoration, originally only including Yellow Island, priod to Althon and New South Mehlville returning to the fold.

Following the tumultuous Dark Ages, Natopia underwent a significant period of restructuring and revival known as the Restoration Period. During this era, Natopia was re-established as a republic in 1534 AN, initially confined to its original core territory on Yellow Island. This marked a return to its foundational roots, both geographically and politically. The restoration process saw the strategic annexation of New South Mehlville and Athlon back into the Natopian fold. These reunifications were crucial in reconsolidating Natopia's territorial integrity. Concurrently, the Natopian republic underwent a transformation, reforming into the second Sovereign Natopian Empire in 1535 AN, with Nathan Waffel-Paine as its first Emperor, officially establishing the House of Waffel-Paine as the royal and imperial House of Natopia.

The second Natopian Empire

The rise of the second Sovereign Natopian Empire witnessed the profound influence of the Bovic religion, which had flourished in Athlon during the Dark Ages and came to provide a source of hope and faith for the Natopian diaspora across Micras. The emperor adopted the dual title of Bovic Emperor of Natopia and Pentheros of the Bovic Church, symbolizing a fusion of political and religious leadership.

The Natopian Reconquista

The Natopian Reconquista is the policy implemented by the second Sovereign Natopian Empire in 1536 AN to reclaim all the lost territories that Natopia had not managed to recover that it held at its zenith in the first Natopian Empire of Nathan Waffel-Paine. The new Natopian nation used the newly established characterized by a resolute mission to reclaim its lost territories east of the Egale River on Tapfer, a vision akin to a manifest destiny for Natopia. This ambitious endeavor was largely successful, with most of the land being swiftly reincorporated into the empire. During this time, Nathan Waffel-Paine, a pivotal figure in the Restoration, abdicated as emperor, passing the mantle to Konrad in 1539 AN.

Emperor Konrad

Under Emperor Konrad's rule, starting from 1539 AN to 1545 AN, Natopia experienced a dramatic shift in governance. The Butter Bull, a deity sometimes perceived as malevolent, manifested itself on Micras, seizing direct control of Natopia and transforming the second Natopian Empire into a theocratic Empire known as The Dominion. This period was marked by radical changes and extreme policies, deeply embedding Bovinism into the mainstream of Natopian life and governance. The Caprine Code was established, further intertwining religious doctrine with state affairs. During times when the Butter Bull was inattentive or absent, the Pentheros assumed the reins of Natopian leadership. However, this era of direct divine rule was short-lived, as the Butter Bull eventually tired of its earthly responsibilities and sacrificed itself, leaving a fragmented government in its wake.

It was during this time that the second Natopian Empire also achieved some of its biggest technological breakthroughs leading to its leadership in Micras in interstellar travel, space defense, and other aerospace technology.

Post-Dominion Era, Empress Carolina, and Elwynnese Protectorate

The Second Natopian Empire emerged from the shadows of the Dominion Era, marked by the departure of the Butter Bull in 1545 AN. Nathan Waffel-Paine resumed leadership, holding dual titles as Emperor and Chancellor, guiding Natopia through a phase of reestablishment and reconstruction. His leadership, characterized by restoration efforts, came to an end with his passing in 1608 AN. The throne then passed to his daughter, Carolina Waffel-Paine, who assumed the role of Empress Carolina I. Under her reign, Christophos Eucalyptos was elected as Chancellor, signifying a shift in governance where real power resided with the Chancellor. During this transition, Natopia briefly became an Elwynnese protectorate between 1609 AN and 1610 AN, influencing its foreign relations and geopolitical posture. The Protectorate resulted in the removal of Carolina Waffel-Paine as Empress of Natopia in 1610 AN at the order of the Dozan Bovic Church, supported by the Frenzy.

Eucalyptos and Emperor Nathaniel

Chancellor Eucalyptos, leveraging his influence within the Dozan Bovic Church, facilitated the appointment of Nathaniel Ayreon-Kalirion of Waffel-Paine, Nathan's adopted son, as the new Emperor of Natopia as Emperor Nathaniel I. Crowned by the Pentheros, Emperor Nathaniel gradually accrued governmental powers through amendments to the Caprine Code, heralding a shift towards a more centralized imperial authority in Lindstrom and on him. Emperors Nathaniel and his half-brother Naian focused on establishing imperial traditions and elevating Natopia’s status globally. Their reigns were dedicated to rebuilding post-Butter Bull Natopia, promoting Bovinism, and positioning Natopia as a liberal and benevolent power on Micras.

Emperor Nathaniel established key imperial and royal traditions, elevating the emperor's role to a living symbol of national unity. His contributions to Natopia's cultural and political landscape set the foundation for subsequent emperors.

Naian's Reign and Succession

Naian, the long-lost son of Nathan Waffel-Paine and a Hazel priestess, succeeded Nathaniel, who had no children. His reign, however, ended tragically with his suicide, leading to the ascension of his only daughter, Asara, as Empress.

The Decade of Two Emperors

This period was marked by significant instability, including troubles in Walstadt and Jingdao. Empress Asara Sisu's three-year reign was characterized by popularity and reform. She was the daughter of Naian and The Dhury and was married to Kyle Kilynn of Shireroth. Her untimely death in Walstadt led to Zakyyr’s controversial six-year rule.

Zakyyr's Rule

Zakyyr's reign was noted for pushing imperial reforms, strengthening the emperor's powers, and aligning Natopia closer with Stormark. His tenure ended with his abdication in favor of Nathan II, the son of Asara, when he turned eight.

Geography

Natopia is organized into demesnes, serving as the primary subdivisions providing local governance, cultural preservation, law enforcement, and public services in areas beyond the purview of the Imperial government. Three demesnes hold special status: Lindstrom, designated as the Free and Imperial City and serving as the capital; Athlon, recognized as a "protected sovereign nation" within Natopia's framework; and Ptia, an "extra-demesnial entity" managed in trust for the global community of Micras, a status evolving from its prior joint administration with the Nelaga Territories.

Yellow Island (also known as Flaventia), Natopia's foundational territory, is subdivided into Ziegeland, Hazelwood, Nova Alrodria (formerly Alrodey), and Tas Neemia. Lindstrom, although situated on Yellow Island, operates as a distinct special administrative area due to its status as the empire's capital.

Tapfer hosts a diverse array of demesnes including Klaasiya; Dos Gardenias; Sororiya and Universalis (both integrated into Flaventia); along with the demesnes of Tapfer (named after the continent), Arboria del Sur, Transegale and Saint Andre, emphasizing Natopia's complex territorial organization on this continent.

The Natopian realm, historically expansive with colonies and territories across Micras, has seen a strategic shift towards centralization in the modern era, leading to the independence or transfer of distant lands to allies. Following the flu pandemic of 1651, Natopia's strategic expansion into Tapfer's southwest underscored its adaptability and humanitarian response to global crises. These changes in the national territory are reflected in the current demesne structure, incorporating Arboria and Saint Andre on Apollonia, alongside Mar Sara, Geneva, and Baudrix on Cibola, which brought back some of the most important core Alexandrian lands.

Geographically, Yellow Island is segmented into varied climate zones, with eastern jungles, northern plains, and fertile lands along Borders Bay. Tapfer's diverse landscapes range from eucalyptus bushlands on the Laval peninsula to the rough terrains of Thalassa, marked by deserts and forests. Significant geographical features include Mt. Vice, the Cabezas de Tapfer, the Massat, and other notable peaks across the empire, illustrating the varied topography within Natopian borders.

Flora and Fauna

Natopians enjoy the plentiful bounty of wheat that grows naturally within their land. The tropical lands in western Thalassa, and on Neridia provide fruit and exotic fish to vary their diets. Yellow Island is perfectly suited to grow cotton, and cotton farms cover the southern landscape. The Great Hazel Woods cover the entire eastern peninsula of Yellow Island, and contains thick foliage cover creating a perpetual twilight. The domestic goat is kept by many farmers and over population has caused many to become feral and exist successfully in the wild.

Cartography

Government and politics

The Bovic Empire of the Natopian Nation, as delineated in its Constitution and in the Imperial Proclamation of Unity, is a plurinational state under the symbolic unity of the Empress of the Natopians and the House of Waffel-Paine. The Constitution establishes a representative democracy, with the Empress holding specific essential and emergency powers. The Frenzy of the Natopian Nation, consisting of the Empress and the popularly elected Representatives from the demesnes, forms the legislative body. It holds the power to enact laws, regulate commerce, and manage the nation's defense and welfare.

The Chancellor of Natopia, leading the Empress' Government and the Imperial Chancellery of Natopia, holds executive power over domestic affairs and acts as the political and administrative leader. The Imperial Court of Natopia, comprising four primary administrative and executive Courts, assists in executive functions. These include the Court of the Calm Waters (Foreign Affairs), Court of the Verdant Gardens (Defense), Court of the Golden Isle (Imperial Affairs), and Court of Commerce and Guilds (Finance and Economic Affairs).

The judicial system of Natopia is vested in the Court of the Noble Fountain, which acts as the supreme judicial authority. It oversees all matters under federal and demesnial law and constitutional questions. The Empress, serving as the presiding officer, and appointed justices constitute the Court.

The Natopian Defense Force, under the command of the Empress and the Secretary for Defense, encompasses army, navy, air force, and spacefleet units. The spacefleet manages interstellar capabilities, including a lunar base on Tarsica. As part of the Raspur Pact, Natopia plays a leading role in the alliance's joint military efforts and adheres to a combined arms military doctrine.

Government finance

As per the Constitution, the Frenzy of the Natopian Empire has the authority to lay taxes, duties, and imposts for the nation’s welfare. The Chancellor oversees national fiscal policies, with financial regulations and standards issued by the Court of Commerce and Guilds.

Demographics

The Natopian census is conducted every twelve years and records information on every person residing in the Empire. It is mandated by the Caprine Code that the Office of the Chancellor of Natopia conducts the census and is primarily used to apportion seats in the Lesser Frenzy. The 1696 Natopian census contains the most recent demographic data.

People

Natopia is home to people of many different national and ethnic origins. As a result, many Natopians do not equate their Natopian nationality with a "Natopian ethnicity," but instead with citizenship and allegiance. Natopia is an ethnically and racially diverse country. Years of expansion have resulted in many different people claiming Natopian identity throughout the world. Several non-human races live in Natopia and they enjoy full equality under the law. Lindstromism, as the nation's guiding political philosophy, also encourages immigration which contributes to creating the rich cultural tapestry of the Natopian people.

Languages

Natspeak, which is a dialect of Istvanistani is the most common language spoken at home in Natopia. It is used exclusively by the government, in business, and the military. Natspeak has its own alphabet, although its use is reserved for ceremonial occasions, formal documents, and can be often found on public buildings. Natopian school children generally learn the Natspeak alphabet after learning to write cursive script. There are many local and regional languages spoken. Each demesne may also have native languages with co-official status.

Education

Natopians are strong advocates for education. Public education is guaranteed in several demesnes. Several Natopian university systems participate in a cooperation agreement, common campus construction, student and faculty exchanges, and recognize degrees awarded by each university.

Religion

Natopians are free to practice any religion of their choice, or not practice any religion. The constitution specified the relationship between church and state as: "The Dozan Bovic Church and the Bovinist religion has a special and formal relationship with the Natopian Nation; however adherence to any religion shall never be used to discriminate against a person." However, the majority of Natopians are Dozan Bovics. The leader of the Bovic Church is required to participate in the coronation ceremony of new Natopian emperors.

Culture

Main article: Culture of Natopia

Natopian culture is often described as plurinational. Many of the demesnes and demesne unions demonstrate vastly different cultures. Natopia is home to groups of people that even predate the foundation of Natopia. Waves of immigrants from other countries over the years have created a cosmopolitan culture as well. The concept of the Natopian Nation uniting these various groups is therefore central to the culture of the empire. The state religion, Bovinism, is seen by adherents and non-believers alike as a cultural cornerstone of Natopia. Bovic holidays are celebrated by closing the government, businesses, and schools for the day. While most demesnes have their own local cuisine, Natopians are fond of (or at least pretend to be) juice and bagels. The pairing of juice with bagels is a common breakfast or afternoon snack. In the older parts of the empire, notably Ziegeland, eating juice and bagels have evolved into a daily ceremony, similar to an afternoon tea. A fondness and slight reverence for the national animal, the goat, is also attributed to the wider culture of Natopia. As a result, goat milk and cheese is seldom ingested, and goats run wild in certain parts of the country.

Press

The Bagelcratican Sporadically is Natopia's most widely circulated newspaper. It features national and international news and is headquartered in Lindstrom City. The Sporadically was originally published as a newsletter for the international Free Juice and Bagels Party movement, with audiences in Natopia and Lavalon. Over time, the paper reported on more news and less political opinion pieces until it became an unofficial journal of record for Natopia, reporting on the Natopian government's activities and agenda.

Many local newspapers are published, including:

Many international papers are widely circulated including The Coprieta Standard, the Shirekeep Gazette, and the Constancia Nea.

Television and News

Main article: Television in Natopia

Natopian television is dominated by five big broadcasting companies, with many smaller to medium sized regional or niche media companies making up the rest of the market. Natopian laws forbid the hyperconcentration of media ownership and encourages competition, creating a flourishing and influential television industry in the Empire. The five big broadcasting companies are Natopian Broadcasting Network (NBN), the state-owned broadcaster and largest of all broadcasting companies, NAT-TV, Sunrise Media Network (SMN), Lindström Communications (LC), and GreenWave Entertainment (GWE).

Natopia's main broadcast news service is the Natopian News Network (NNN), by the Natopian Broadcasting Network. NNN's over-the-air broadcast range reaches consumer markets across all of Natopia. The signal is relayed by the Natopian International Space Station to Arboria, Neridia, St Andre, Two Martyrs, Athlon, and Mar Sara. Content on NNN is governed by fairness doctrines and ethical guidelines. Most Natopian households (81%) subscribe to some pay-TV service. Cable TV is still popular in the older parts of the empire, like Yellow Island and the Laval Peninsula, whereas satellite TV is prevalent among younger Natopians and newer parts of the Empire due to cheap infrastructure and the Natopian Spacefleet's policy of leasing its satellite bandwidth to companies.

Arts, Literature, and Architecture

The arts have always been supported in Natopia. Empire Library was founded relatively early in the nation's lifetime and has been consistently supported by various governments. The cultural impact of the Library is nearly immeasurable. Not only does it house government archives, but also works of literature and poetry. The Library was soon expanded to include a museum and the Empire Library Art Museum is one of Micras' largest and oldest art museums. Architecture was recognized early on as a way to define the Natopian nation and set it apart and above.

Cuisine

The basic diet for many Natopians is fish and grains. Fish is abundant in the coastal areas of almost all demesnes of Natopia. The island of Punkrock was in important early exporter of spices to satisfy the demand for flavored fish recipes. Staple grains are exported from the extremely fertile region of the Laval Peninsula. Egale's generalized agricultural community, and the cattle ranches of northern Flaventia provide other sources of surplus food. The traditional and customary Natopian diet enjoyed across ethnic divides are bagels made from Laval wheat and fruit juice imported from Neridia. Aside from customary bagels and juice, Natopian cuisine is highly localized.
