Prince Janus Eadric of Neridia and Dos Gardenias (born 15.VII.1722 AN) is a Natopian prince and military officer serving in the Natopian Defense Force. The second son of Hereditary Prince Alaric and Princess Laura, he is a member of the House of Eadric and third in the line of succession to the Principality of Neridia. He holds the rank of Major in the Natopian Army and has published scholarly work on military history and strategic studies.
Early life and education
Janus was born on 15.VII.1722 AN at the Princely Palace in Dos Gardenias, one year after his elder brother Prince Michael. He grew up between the family's residences in Dos Gardenias and Lindström, receiving an education typical of Natopian royalty. He attended the Imperial Academy of Lindström from 1734 AN to 1739 AN, where he studied classical subjects, military history, and philosophy. His tutors noted his interest in the campaigns of Nathan Waffel-Paine during the First Natopian Empire and the strategic lessons of the War of Lost Brothers. By age twelve, Janus spoke Natspeak, Alexandrian, and conversational Treesian fluently. After completing secondary education, he enrolled at the University of Lindström in 1739 AN to study history with a concentration in military affairs. His academic career was interrupted in 1740 AN when he entered the modeling industry.
Modeling career
In 1740 AN, Janus was discovered by a photographer at a diplomatic reception in Lindström. His appearance marked by his sharp features, grey-blue eyes, and the tall stature common to the Eadric line ended up attracting attention from fashion houses in Nouvelle Alexandrie and Constancia. Between 1740 AN and 1741 AN, he appeared in campaigns for the New Alexandrian fashion house Maison de Vérine and Natopian luxury watchmaker Lindström Timepieces. His work generated media attention, with some publications referring to him as "the Prince of Fashion." In early 1742 AN, Hereditary Prince Alaric and Princess Laura intervened, concerned about the reputation their son was developing. The family announced that Janus would join the Natopian Defense Force, fulfilling the national service requirement for young Natopians.
Military career
Janus entered the Natopian Army as an officer cadet in 1742 AN, enrolling in the Imperial Military Academy at Lindström. He completed officer training in 1743 AN and was commissioned as a Second Lieutenant, assigned to the 2nd Regiment, I "Asara" Corps of the 600th Army in Tapfer. He served in border security operations and participated in joint exercises with Raspur Pact allied forces. His performance evaluations praised his leadership and tactical thinking.
In 1745 AN, he was promoted to First Lieutenant and assigned to I Corps headquarters for operational planning and intelligence analysis. In this capacity, he participated in the planning and execution of Operation Golden Tide during the Fourth Euran War, serving as a staff officer in the I "Asara" Corps during its deployment to Oportia as part of the Natopian Expeditionary Force. His work focused on logistics coordination and operational planning for the corps' role in the amphibious assault and subsequent stabilization operations. His performance during the campaign earned him the Raspur Pact Joint Service Commendation in 1746 AN.
Following the success of Operation Golden Tide, Janus continued to serve in occupation duties in Oportia through early 1747 AN, contributing to the intelligence analysis supporting the Transitional Government of the State of Oportia. His experience coordinating with allied forces from Nouvelle Alexandrie, Constancia, and Zeed through the Trans-Euran Command proved valuable in developing his understanding of coalition warfare and civil-military cooperation.
Promoted to Captain in 1747 AN upon his return from Oportia, Janus transferred to the Natopian Airmobile Rapid Reaction Force, serving as a company commander in the 11th Air Assault Brigade. In 1748 AN, he was selected for accelerated promotion and attended the Strategic Studies Program at the Court of the Verdant Gardens. Upon completion, he was promoted to Major and assigned to the Strategic Planning Division of the Natopian Army, where he works on strategic assessment, force modernization planning, and liaison with allied militaries. This role has brought him into frequent contact with military officials from Nouvelle Alexandrie, Constancia, and other Raspur Pact nations, relationships he initially established during his service in Oportia.
Scholarly work
Despite active military service, Janus has maintained scholarly pursuits. His 1746 AN article "Lessons from the Egale: Logistics and Supply Lines in the Unification Period" appeared in the Journal of Natopian Military History and analyzed Nathan Waffel-Paine's campaigns. In 1748 AN, he published "Combined Arms Doctrine in the Modern Age: Learning from the War of Lost Brothers," examining how the Natopian Defense Force evolved its tactical doctrine. Janus completed a Master of Arts degree in Military History from the University of Lindström through evening and correspondence courses while on active duty, graduating in 1747 AN.
Public role
As a member of the House of Eadric and prince of Neridia and Dos Gardenias, Janus has undertaken diplomatic and ceremonial duties. He has represented the Principality at state functions, military commemorations, and cultural events throughout Natopia and abroad.
In 1748 AN, Janus accompanied a Natopian delegation to Nouvelle Alexandrie for joint military planning sessions related to Raspur Pact operations. He has been involved in bilateral initiatives aimed at strengthening military cooperation between Natopia and Nouvelle Alexandrie. His familiarity with Alexandrian society, developed during his modeling career, has aided his diplomatic work.
Personal life
Janus is an accomplished equestrian and sailor, often spending leave time sailing near Dos Gardenias. He maintains an extensive private library focused on military history and philosophy. He is fluent in Natspeak, Alexandrian, and Treesian, with working knowledge of Istvanistani. He practices Bovinism, approaching his faith with what observers describe as thoughtful pragmatism.
