The name Waffel comes from the Sin'felo elf clan of the Phoenix Forest, the Founder's oldest known maternal ancestors. In order to Natopianize the name for easier assimilation in Germanic Ziegeland, Nathan's homeland, Sin'felo was changed to von 'Fel and eventually became Waffel. The Founder's paternal family is native to Yellow Island, serving as shepherds in the countryside. Therefore Paine was chosen to indicate the humble, outlying, pastoral origins of the Founder. The name combines ancient mysterious foreign origins and humble native roots. The name may be pronounced "Va-fell-pain" or "Waffle-pain" depending on the speaker's preference. Both pronunciations carry the same tone of respect. | The name Waffel comes from the Sin'felo elf clan of the Phoenix Forest, the Founder's oldest known maternal ancestors. The House of Waffel-Paine (originally Waffle-Paine) is an imperial and royal Tapferite dynasty of Mehl origin. It was founded in 1509 AN by Nathan I, the son of Mehl sheepherders Ædwynn Paine Shepherd and Jaynae Von'Fel Lindenstream. Nathan was a Natopian political leader who had risen to power during the early Natopian Republic and who in 1506 transformed the Imperial Republic of Natopia into the Kingdom of Natopia, and then the Sovereign Natopian Empire three years later during a rime of rapid expansion on the Tapfer continent following the Novasolum Crisis.
The House of Waffel-Paine has been the Imperial House of Natopia since 1509 except for interregnums in 1533-36 and 1556-1610. In addition to holding the title of Emperor of the Natopians, the Waffel-Paine dynasty holds various other titles and territories, including the Kingdom of Drak-Modan, Elwynn, and Imperial Republic of Shireroth.
The house is heavily linked to Elwynn's history. Its founder, Nathan Waffel-Paine, ruled Elwynn twice, first as Duke (c1552-1555), and later, as Prince (1586-1589). As Prince, Nathan married Shireroth's then Kaiser, Ayreon II (Elijah), and their child, Nathaniel, served as Prince of Elwynn too (1604-1618, pretender 1607-1618) and emperor of Natopia. The Founder's cousin, Lord Erion, was Elwynn's president 1570-1573 and served in various positions in the Elwynnese government.
The House of Waffel-Paine has established important links with many other dynasties, most notable the House of Ayreon-Kalirion. Other close dynastic allegiances include the House of Eadric. All members of the House, by virtue of descent or adoption from Emperor Nathan I, have a right of membership in the Order of the Holy Lakes. In 1698, however, Nathan II and Clara Sundara, citing the en masse admission of the Çakari Sultan's family line as a Vanic corruption of the Order, renounced membership for themselves and their adult children, who all accepted the renunciation for themselves. Since then, some of Nathan II's and Clara Sundara's descendants have returned to the Order by marriage, but otherwise, most of them are not members of the Order, but are eligible to seek re-entry by appeal to the Senate. (See the Almanac for more information.)
The House is governed by the Avatar who is the person most directly descended from Nathan Waffel-Paine, with preference given to biological children. The current Avatar is Nathaniel Kalimatov Waffel-Paine who is a fifth-generation direct descendant of the Founder.
Individuals not related by blood or by law to Nathan Waffel-Paine can be grafted into the family by the current Avatar, establishing their own branch. This is reserved for very important people, such as Sir Iain de Vembria, Lord Erion.
Today, the House of Waffel-Paine rules Natopia and Shireroth.

Assets and Wealth
Over the past 180 years, the Waffel-Paine family has amassed considerable wealth. The family's fortune began during Nathan Waffel-Paine's long tenure as chancellor of the early Natopian republic, from which he drew a considerable salary. Since 1497 his personal wealth was increased by his sole ownership of Dingo Enterprises, a privately owned company that remains under the family's control to this day. Dingo Enterprises has often been contracted by the Natopian government for a variety of large-scale and lucrative infrastructure projects such as military-industrial production and infrastructure.
The family yacht, Urania, was an early display of wealth. Purchased from the famous Royal Shipyards of Gotzborg, the yacht has been owned by the heirs of Nathan for generations. It has been been maintained as it was the day it was delivered. It is used by the head of the Waffel-Paine house for personal transportation and frequently uses it to circumnavigate Yellow Island.
The living heirs of Nathan receive considerable stipends from ownership stakes in Dingo Enterprises. Upon Nathan's second death in 1607, it was reported that the private shares of Dingo Enterprises were divided equally between his two children: Naian Waffel-Paine and Nathaniel Ayreon-Kalirion. Their descendants still retain ownership to this day, although the exact percentages are not disclosed to the public. Daily governance of Dingo Enterprises is carried out by an Executive Director elected by a board.
The Avatar of the House, who is almost always the Faro of Flaventia, also owns shares of SATCo, as do all demesne leaders. SATCo's business model seeks to maximize profits abroad to reinvest back into the Natopian demesnes.
Members of the Waffel-Paine family who hold Flaventian titles of nobility also draw modest stipends derived from public lands in their titular counties or duchies. The Faro of Flaventia frequently gifts these counties to family members upon their birth or as marriage gifts.
The total net worth of the family is unknown, but with Dingo Enterprises, SATCo shares, and almost 200 years of investing Nathan's original fortune, the family is likely valued at tens of billions of natopos.

Family Contract
The Domestic Contract of the Imperial and Royal House of Waffel-Paine
First Issued by Avatar Naian Waffel-Paine
To better organize my extended family; to honor my father, founder of this family and the Nation; and to protect his legacy by ensuring the progression, expansion, and growth of the family for eternity on Micras and beyond:
Amended by current Avatar Asara Sisu Waffel-Paine
Re-issued by Avatar Nathan II Waffel-Paine in 1665, 1673
I. Definition of the House
1. The Imperial and Royal House of Waffel-Paine is the extended family organization of Nathan Waffel-Paine, the Founder, and those people related to him by blood, marriage, contract, kinship, or special relationship.
II. Imperial and Royal Status and Conditions
1. The House has eternal Imperial status by right of members of the House currently holding, or having held in the past, the position of Emperor of the Natopians.
2. The House has eternal Royal status by right of members of the House currently holding, or having held in the past, the conflated positions of Faro of Flaventia, King of Ziegeland, and Raja of Tas Neemia.
III. Foundation of the House
1. The House of Waffel-Paine was founded in 1509 μΝ (corresponding to October 5, 2005) by Nathan Waffel-Paine who took the name as a new surname to differentiate and honor his heritage. The name is derived from the Founder's earliest recorded ancestors.
2. Waffel comes from the Sin'felo elf clan of the Phoenix Forest, the Founder's oldest known maternal ancestors. In order to Natopianize the name for easier assimilation in Germanic Ziegeland, Nathan's homeland, Sin'felo was changed to "von 'Fel" and eventually became "Waffel."
3. The Founder's paternal family is native to Yellow Island, serving as shepherds in the countryside. Therefore "Paine" was chosen to indicate the humble, outlying, pastoral origins of the Founder.
4. The name combines ancient mysterious foreign origins and humble native roots. The name may be pronounced "Va-fell-pain" or "Waffle-pain" depending on the speaker's preference. Both pronunciations carry the same tone of respect.
IV. Structure and Rules
1. The head of the House holds the title of Avatar.
2. The Avatar of the House is the closest living descendant, by blood and absolute primogeniture, of the Founder.
3. The Avatar of the House of Waffel-Paine advises members of the House upon marriages or unions that will benefit the member and grow the House in size and prestige.
4. Members of the House are expected to show respect and reverence to the Avatar as their elder.
5. The Avatar may expel unruly or disrespectful members of the House. All other members who claim their relationship to the House through an expelled member are themselves no longer members.
6. Persons who falsely pretend to membership in the House may be subject to legal recourse in appropriate jurisdictions.
7. The House's administrative functions are based in family lodges in Anmutstadt and Tassity.
8. Members of the House receive no special treatment under the imperial law. Natopia offers no protections to citizens based on birth- or marriage-right unless specifically granted by the Caprine Code.
9. Members of the House may enjoy preference of status, certain privileges, and protections as extended to them by Mandate of the Faro when residing in Flaventia.
V. Titles

5. Reincarnation of The Dhury (prefaced by the appropriate ordinal), a reference to the cycle of reincarnation of Saint Taznim. May only be held by direct, first-born, female, blood only, descendants of Saint Taznim.

6. All members of the House may use "of Waffel-Paine" as a surname in the event that their surname at birth is not already Waffel-Paine by usual conventions.
7. Persons who use these titles without permission will be subject to legal recourse in all applicable jurisdictions.
8. Lord or Lady in Jorvik, a reference to titles to the jarldom previously held by members of the House.
9. Marquis/Marquise of Lükanburg, as the Founder was the first marquis, the Avatar of the House holds this title.
