Electoral zones of Gerenia
Electoral Zones of the Gerenian National Assembly are the 25 electorates for the Parliament's lower house.
Apportionment
Originally, the Constitution of Gerenia did not state how many members the National Assembly should have. At the time of the creation of the Parliament of Gerenia in 2012, the Commission tasked with the arrangement of the Parliament recommended to have at least 100 members in the lower house of the Aiŷlat. A decree issued on 21 August 2012 provided the formation of the National Assembly, to have 100 members as a provisional measure. The members of both houses would be elected by the peoples of their respective provinces. The following year, this decree (which was passed by the Parliament once it began functioning) was replaced by the "Electoral Zones Creation Act". The Act changed the manner in which National Assembly members were elected: the provincial electorates were divided into 21 "zones". The number of members to be elected in each zone depends on the population of it, but there must be at least one seat in dispute.
In November 2015, with the creation of the East Gerenia, and the Trans-Samarne Province, two new zones were created. The first representatives for those zones were elected in the 2016 election.
The following year, Gerenian South Keltia became the 24th electoral zone. Their first representatives were elected in the 2017 election. The creation of the first overseas territory motivated a change in the National Assembly's composition, with 100 members representing Mainland Gerenia, and a corresponding number of members representing Overseas Gerenia.
In 2018, the 25th zone was created. It is composed of the dependencies of Piraf and Zylenia.
Voting system
For electoral zones with three or more seats, the voting system adopted is proportional representation. For two-member electorates, a different rule applies: if a party reaches 51% of the votes, then it wins both seats, otherwise, the two parties with most votes win one seat each. For single-member zones, the most voted party wins the seat.
