Lija Island (Arboric: جزيرة ليجا) was a sarkar of Çakaristan, located on the Wilhelm Isles. Since the addition of the eastern island, it has also been known as the Lija Islands. The islands have a complex history of colonization and shifting sovereignty, having been ruled by the Britannic Empire, the Empire of Norona, the Holzer Reich, the Victorian Empire, the Realm of Passio-Corum, and the Republic of Lostisland, before finally being incorporated into the Çakar Empire in the 18th century. The name "Wilhelm Isles" derives from the founding of Fort Wilhelm on the main island in the mid-16th century.
In modern history, the archipelago is the site of the Dromosker Island Crisis (1757–1759 AN), which resulted in the independence of the Lija Islands and the establishment of the Republic of Lija.
History
Early Settlement and The April Islands
The earliest known settlement on the islands was Treesia. Following this period, the archipelago was organized as the Aerligian April Islands State, a political entity that existed until 1514 AN.
Imperial Era (1521–1574)
The islands saw a rapid succession of imperial powers during the 16th century:
- 1521–1523 AN: The islands were briefly annexed by New Britannia.
- 1526–1551 AN: Control passed to the Empire of Norona. During this period, the city of Fort Wilhelm was founded on the main island, which subsequently led to the region being known as the Wilhelm Isles. The Empire of Norona was later incorporated into the Holzer Reich.
- 1551–1557 AN: The islands were home to the Empire of Kazoku until it was absorbed by the Holzer Reich in 1557 AN.
- 1557–1574 AN: The islands remained part of the Holzer Reich through various administrative changes until the Reich's dissolution and the subsequent rise of the Victorian Empire. The Victorian rule ended with its demise in 1574 AN.
The Main Island: Fragmentation and Union
Following the collapse of the Victorian Empire, the Main Island experienced a period of fragmentation and the rise of new political entities:
- 1579–1592 AN: The island was part of the Federated Republics of A1.
- 1599–1603 AN: Control shifted to The Dominion.
- 1621 AN: The Republic of Liga was established. During this time, the city of Voorpost was founded. In 1645 AN, Voorpost hosted the signing of the Treaty of Voorpost, which established the Union of States around the Sovereign Oceans (USSO).
- 1627 AN: The island came under the rule of the Realm of Passio-Corum, which later became part of the Haifa-Pallisican Imperial Trade Union.
- 1718 AN: The Main Island was incorporated into the Çakar Empire.
The Eastern Island: Lostisland and the Humanitarian Mission
The Eastern Island followed a distinct political trajectory, often aligned with the Republic of Lostisland:
- 1578–1582 AN: The island was part of Normarkian Búrinsøyene.
- 1583–1726 AN: The island was an integral part of the Republic of Lostisland.
- 1726 AN: Following the collapse of Lostisland, a joint Humanitarian Mission was launched by Nouvelle Alexandrie and the Çakar Empire. The mission resulted in a partition of the former Lostisland territories:
- The Eastern Island was annexed by the Çakar Empire.
- The remaining islands of Lostisland were incorporated into Nouvelle Alexandrie.
Modern Conflicts
The annexation of the Eastern Island by Çakaristan in 1726 AN, and the subsequent integration of the Main Island in 1718 AN, set the stage for the Dromosker Island Crisis of 1757–1759. This crisis involved a Çakari military intervention, a naval standoff with Nouvelle Alexandrie, and a strategic deception campaign ("Operation Ocean Moon"), ultimately leading to the 1759 Referendum of Lija. The referendum resulted in the separation of the Lija Islands from the Çakar Empire and their accession to the Confederation of the Phineonesian Nations (CPN).
