Suqutra, officially the Sultanate of Suqutra (Arboric: سلطنة سقطرى), is a princely state of Çakaristan, located on a island in the Antican Sea. Lying between the Harad Strait and the Melangiatic Strait. It's capital is Suqutra.
Name
The name Suqutra is an Arboric derivative of Sakatra, the historical name for the capital between 1537 and 1638 AN. Before that, the name of the capital city was Melangia, which the island retained until 1641 AN. There are several explanations for the name Suqutra:
- A variation of the name of an ancient deity: Sakat.
- The Samsrumukhat "Dvīpa Sukhadara" which means "island of bliss".
- The Arboric terms "suq", market, and "qutra", a vulgar form of qatir, which refers to dragon's blood.
History
Before the island became part of Shireroth, it was part of the United Empire. The island and its capital bore the same name: Melangia. Around 1537 AN, the name of the capital was changed to Sakatra. The county and the island retained their previous names. Andreas the Wise was registered as count of Melangia in 1577 AN. In 1598 AN, Cla'Udi was count of Melangia, which was part of Thanedom or Schlangen. In 1575 AN, the island was part of negotiations between Antica and Shireroth to hand over the island to Antica, but the island's inhabitants successfully resisted. Melangia's position remained disputed after the Revolution of 1617, but it eventually became part of the Apollonian Republic. This remained until 1665 AN, after which the island became part of Krasnocoria.
In 1690 AN, it became part of the Çakar Empire.
