1694 Humanist Convention
The 1694 Convention of the Nationalist & Humanist Party was held in the city of Port Tablot (Nouvelle Alexandrie) between 13.VII.1694 AN and 24.VII.1694 AN. Attended by the Council of Archons and the legatine delegations of the national sector parties, the Convention attended to the election of the Hierophant of the global Nationalist Humanist Movement.
1694 Hierophant Elections
Augustus Strong, as hosting Archon for the Convention, convened the session and set aside the period of 13 to 19.VII.1694 AN for the purpose of debate and for any other business, during which time he would accept, as convener, declarations of candidacy for the position of Hierophant of the Humanist Movement. Candidates would be permitted to use the nomination period for the canvasing of support, thereafter the remaining days of the session would be utilised to run successive rounds of voting until the selection of a single candidate with the support of a majority (50% + 1) of the Council of Archons had been achieved.
In accordance with the custom and practice of the Council of Archons, each National Sector Party and or affiliate was accorded a single vote, divided amongst the number of acclaimed holders of archonic rank included in the national delegation.

Aftermath of the Third Round of voting
Continued divisions in the Elwynnese delegation, combined by the switch of Jaaland's support from Sarah Dravot-Osman to Fridwald Peter, as a Populares candidate, saw an unexpected victory in the third round for Fridwald Peter, the Ransenari moderate. This outcome was immediately protested by the Constancian delegation which pointed to the rules put forward by Augustus Strong, which had required a winning majority of 50% + 1. As 2/3 of the Elwynnese delegation was now aligned behind Sarah Dravot-Osman, the Optimates candidate, it was proposed by the delegation of Chryse that the Elwynnese delegation's vote be counted wholly in favour of Sarah Dravot-Osman. This proposal was met by uproar amongst the Populares and was also objected to on the basis that such an outcome would only result in a tie. When Augustus Strong offered under that circumstance to cast a tie breaking vote as convener, this too was howled down by the Populares delegates since he had already cast his vote in favour of Sarah Dravot-Osman during the preceding three rounds of voting.
The delegations of Hurmu, Jaaland, and Shireroth, alongside Kamilla Winther of Elwynn, were subjected to increasing pressure to change their vote to favour Sarah Dravot-Osman. This prompted Kamilla and Shireroth's Archon, Soleima Eslamdokht, to issue a strident declaration of support for Fridwald Peter on the basis of Benacian solidary. Daniyal al-Osman, having voted in the first two rounds for Adam al-Osman out of dynastic familial considerations, felt obliged to maintain the support of Hurmu's delegation for the Populares candidate with half an eye to the electoral fortunes of the Coalition for Democratic Humanism in Hurmu.
Dāryuš of the Suren then proposed that the question of leadership be resolved by a duel. This proposal was met with general incredulity until Daniyal al-Osman rose and stated that, if the Surenshah proposed the challenge on behalf of Sarah Dravot-Osman, then he would accept on behalf of the winning candidate. The enmity between the House of Osman and the House of Suren, dating back to the betrayal of Raspur by the Suren during the Second Euran War, was never far beneath the surface during their interactions.
Fridwald Peter meanwhile decried the suggestion of such a barbaric ritual to determine the leadership of a "reputable global movement". Instead he called upon the delegates to consider their positions "“in the interest of cooperation and stability of our Humanist Movement".
Whilst all present assented to the wisdom of Fridwald's remarks, and Sarah Dravot-Osman herself had condemned the talk of a duel as "senseless and disgraceful", the words that had been exchanged between Dāryuš and Daniyal up to that point had already made a duel inevitable.
The duel of Dāryuš of the Suren and Daniyal al-Osman
With all efforts to encourage the Surenshah and the Prime Minister of Hurmu to amicably reconcile having failed it was agreed that the duel between them would take place on the beach of Port Tablot at sunset on 24.VII.1694 AN. While a matter of honour, it was agreed that the victor of the duel would command the vote of the national delegation of the defeated party. Were Daniyal to be victorious this would bestow the +1 majority the Populares required for victory, but were he to fall the deadlock would only be deepened.
The duel, the time and place now agreed to, would be fought in the Euran fashion. The challenger and the respondent would each endure from the other three blasts of a Fire-lance from a distance of fifty paces. Should both remain standing at the end of the exchange of fire, the duel would be resolved by three bouts fought with scimitar and shield.
The pair met at the appointed time on the designated "field of honour", set on the shore and watched by a crowd of curious onlookers, with a distinctly reluctant Constantine Loup serving as intermediary and referee. As the respondent who had accepted the challenge on behalf of Fridwald Peter, Daniyal received the first fire-lance and gave fire against where Dāryuš stood unflinching.

Having been subjected to what would swiftly have become a fatal wound if left untended, the team of clinicians and medics provided by the Honourable Company, rushed to staunch the bleeding and perform the amputation necessary to remove the right arm above the elbow where the awful gouge into shredded flesh and bone had been made.
As officials rushed frantically to arrange for an orderly transfer of power in the Suren Confederacy, it was deemed by all present that the verdict of the duel had been in the favour of the Populares. Accordingly the vote of Suren delegation was transferred to Fridwald Peter.
