Port Tablot is a city in the Isles of Caputia, a region of Nouvelle Alexandrie, and the capital of the state of Tablot Island. The oldest Hammish foundation in the archipelago, it was established about 1470 AN as a military base and grew into the principal naval station of the island region. Its population is estimated at some 720,000.[1]
History
Port Tablot was the oldest Hammish territory in the Region of the Isles, dating to the United Commonwealth of Hamland, Monovia, and Iridia, and was founded as a military base spanning both the island on which the city stands and a small peninsula on the adjacent island.[2] When the United Commonwealth broke up the Iridian lands were returned, and for a time the surrounding islands passed to Ocia.[2]
The rivalry between Hamland and Ocia, each of them seeking to be the leading power of Keltia, made Port Tablot a base of consequence and a potential flashpoint through the years of tension that followed. The narrow peninsula under the city's authority once held one of Hamland's missile testing ranges, alongside another in Taeland.[2] A later crisis came with Babkha: Hamland, then aligned with the left-wing powers, expelled Babkhan nationals, and Babkha answered by sending a vessel into Hammish territorial waters, though the confrontation went no further.[2] Tae soldiers were among those trained at the base.[2]
Through the Commonwealth period the Port Tablot Naval Base served as the principal naval station of the Region of the Isles, its harbor and the sheltered waters of the adjacent peninsula giving the Hammish fleet a secure anchorage in the archipelago.[2] The city's standing rested more on this strategic placement than on trade, and it remained an important Hammish site into the region's later history.[2]
Caputian statehood
Under the Kingdom of Caputia the archipelago was a state in its own right, and Port Tablot served as its capital; the state recorded a population of 5,100,950 at the census of 1657 AN, before Caputian rule ended with the kingdom in the White Plague.[3]
Modern city
On the region's later passage into Nouvelle Alexandrie and the resettlement of the islands, the modern port at Port Tablot was built by the Caputian Resettlement Authority, as were those at Port Karsten and Velez.[4] The city became the capital of the state of Tablot Island, the least populous of the four states of the region, and remains the administrative center of the island.[1]
Port Tablot is, with the Liberty Islands, among the more strongly Hammish parts of a region otherwise settled largely from the Caputian diaspora, and Hammish is widely spoken there.[2]
