1681 Elwynnese congress election
The Elwynnese congressional elections in 1681 took place on 8.IV.1681, on the same day as elections were held to the Majles of the Alalehzamini Autonomous Republic and Normark's Nordisketing.
Background
- Banning of Verionist Union as a consequence of the Verionist Vespers, a reaction to the destruction wrought in Elsenar by the Verionist Republic during its downfall;
- Banning of the Conservative Historical Party for their overt allegiance to a foreign despot whose territorial ambitions and plans for self-aggrandisement were well known and ultimately culminated in the Second Amokolian War;
- Banning of the Libertarian Party, the Patriotic Alliance of Cimmeria and Kiladôr, and the Holy Party of the Divine Icebear, on account of their attempts at organising a Verionist revival in the bailiwicks of the former Northern Commonwealth;
- Banning of the Movement for a Free Elwynn, for being yet another attempt at organising a Verionist revival in the former Northern Commonwealth combined with an effort to force the dismantling of the collective trade and security arrangements of Eastern Benacia;
- Banning of the Ayreonist Independence Party, the Communist Party of Elwynn, and the Amokolian Freedom Front, for their part in the Coldwater Scandal (the sale of confiscated Iron Company assets to a front-company owned by a prominent Verionist family), the persistent attempts at sabotaging Elwynn's contribution to the defence of its Florian allies during the Verionian-Raspur War, and finally the attempt to instigate a procedural coup against the Prince of Elwynn.
- The dismissal of the Congressional Government and the dissolution of Congress was characterised by Ayreonist sources as an Nationalist-Humanist coup. However, for the most part, the perception, shaped by a sympathetic media, has been that the Court of the Prince, supported by the Court of Star Chamber, sought the removal from power of a weak minority executive that had instead embarked upon a senseless policy of antagonising and subverting Elwynn's government and alliances in an effort to curry favour with its enemies and disgraced exiles.

Aftermath and government formation
The Elwynnese Workers' Party approached the Democratic Party of Elwynn to discuss a coalition government. At the same time, the Democratic Party negotiated with the Nationalist and Humanist Party on a coalition agreement. The EWP responded that they felt "cheated out", and vowed to lead a constructive patriotic opposition that would cater for the common people of Elwynn.
Once the first session of the Senate met on 17.IV.1681, the Senate elected first Anton Trexeller (N&H) to President of the Congress in a 167–83 vote against Isa Kaliandaron Qor. Trexeller then proposed to the Congress in a first, second, and third reading the next three days that Congress elect Helena Strand to Conducator of the Elwynnese Republic. On 21.IV.1681, Strand was elected to the position with 163 votes in favour (DEM and N&H), 82 votes against (EWP, APP, MPDS) and 5 abstentions (PR, UTB).
