1677 Northern Commonwealth election
The 1677 Northern Commonwealth congressional election was held on 5.VIII.1677.
Background
After the end of Verionism (11.XI.1676), the Northern Commonwealth's congress had been suspended with Aldin Ayreon-Kalirion serving as its conducator and his wife Li Naomiai Avon-El, having defected from Shireroth, serving as its congressional president (and member of the Council of Eliria)
Many people in the Northern Commonwealth regarded the establishment of the Northern Commonwealth as an artificial construct to avoid a Verionist war. With the Verionists having abdicated their political power fully, the question of the Northern Commonwealth's continued existence as an autonomous republic was the main political issue in the Northern Commonwealth throughout the end of 1676 and the beginning of 1677. Meanwhile, the Congressional Counties' government in Eliria intensely lobbied for a Northern Commonwealth retrocession to the Congressional Counties, from which it was carved to appease the Verionists.
Campaign
The campaign was somewhat low-key and did not bring much media frenzy outside the Northern Commonwealth. Two new parties were established contesting the election: the Libertarian Party (from the libertarian wing of former Verionist sympathisers) and the Patriotic Alliance of the Northern Commonwealth, a vehemently anti-retrocessionist party, also founded by former Verionist sympathisers.
Pro-integrationist/retrocessionist parties were:
- Democratic Party of Elwynn (DEM)
- Ayreonist Independence Party (AIP)
- Elwynnese Workers' Party (EWP)
- Communist Party of Elwynn (CPE)
Anti-integrationist/retrocessionist parties were:
- Holy Party of the Divine Icebear (HPDI)
- Libertarian Party (LPNC)
- Patriotic Alliance of Cimmeria and Kiladôr (PACK)
The Nationalist and Humanist Party did not officially communicate a stand on the matter, though Northern Commonwealth media reported a skepticism within the party towards the idea of reintegration to the Congressional Counties.
Electoral method
Each bailiwick of the Northern Commonwealth constituted one constituency. Each bailiwick was afforded at least one member of congress. The remaining seats (of a maximum 100) were divided to each bailiwick by proportion of its population. As such, the average bailiwick delegation was 3 members of congress, the smallest one 1 member (several bailiwicks), and the largest one 14 (Fieldburg).

Aftermath and government formation
The Democrats, Ayreonists and Nationalist-Humanists formed a coalition together with the goal of dissolving the Northern Commonwealth's status as an autonomous republic and reintegrate with the Congressional Counties. Li Naomiai (DEM) became the President of the Northern Congress, while her husband Aldin Ayreon-Kalirion (AIP) became the Conducător of the Northern Commonwealth.
