Government formation

  • The Nationalist and Humanist Party announced they would not support a continued government led by the Democrats.
  • The Democrats began coalition negotiations with the Socialists. Although the Democrats had more in common with the Ayreonists, the Democrats leaked information about how they viewed the Ayreonists as untrustworthy and inexperienced. As such, the coalition agreement with the Socialists showed the congressional government take a large leap to the left, with promises
    • to end corporal punishment,
    • more investments in public services, research, education, and science
    • no privatization of public services
    • no legislation detrimental to workers' rights and security
  • For the Socialists, this coalition agreement was difficult as it still marked, for them, a shift to the right. But after being isolated and powerless in the opposition, they let their pragmatic side win, and ratified the coalition agreement. In return, the Socialists got the presidency of the Congress and one third of all ministers.
