East Zimia and the Wallis Islands, officially the Kingdom of Eastern Zimia and the Wallis Islands (Pallisican: Konedóama del Eazdeign Zíamaía aji hed Wallíos Islajíos; Sangunese: 東ジミア及およびワリス諸島王国 Higashi Zimia oyobi Warisu-shotō Ōkoku; Thraci: Doğu Zimya ve Wallis Adaları Krallığı), is a sovereign state in northern Corum. Proclaimed on 1.VII.1720 by the Southern Peoples' United Autonomous Government, a self-declared government-in-exile founded in neighbouring Greater Sangun, the kingdom considers itself a successor to Bassarid New Zimia, but initially was widely seen as a Sangunese puppet state. It was formally recognised as a member of the Mondosphere on 6.XII.1720.

The city of Cannassas (Pallisican: Cañaßáos; Sangunese: カナサス市 Kanasasu-shi) was originally chosen to be the capital of the kingdom, although Southman (Pallisican: Sóuzhamäl; Sangunese: 南人市 Nanjin-shi) remained the seat of government due to its central location and more favourable security situation. For this reason, the state is sometimes referred to as the Kingdom of Southman (Pallisican: Konedóama del Sóuzhamäl; Sangunese: 南人王国 Nanjin Ōkoku). On 13.X.1723, it was announced that the government would remain in Southman, which would become the de jure as well as de facto capital.

In an effort to capitalise on this momentum and solidify their control over the region, the ISA induced the SPUAG to accept a Sangunese nominee as head of state, who was duly proclaimed monarch of the new Kingdom of Eastern Zimia and the Wallis Islands on 1.VII.1720, under the regnal name of Mina II. Although some in the SPUAG voiced misgivings that such foreign interference would alienate local support and so reduce their credibility in the eyes of the populace, the latter soon rallied around the new government, which was widely seen as a preferable alternative to the chaos and conflict subsuming other former Bassarid territories.

The early years of the kingdom saw the ruling elite increasingly polarised between proponents of consolidation and territorial expansion. While the former stressed the need to properly establish the new state, the latter saw the collapse of Bassarid hegemony as presenting a unique opportunity and argued that other powers would undoubtedly seek to fill the resulting power vacuum, were the regime in Southman to baulk at the task. Various expansionist schemes were touted, notably the capture of the strategic energy-generation facilities at Corum Electric and an even more ambitious plan to mount an expedition to occupy the city of Ossyo on the shores of Lake Norton- some two thousand kilometres from the kingdom's heartland.

On 7.IV.1721, East Zimia and the Wallis Islands concluded a treaty with Çakaristan, in which the latter recognised the kingdom's claims to Corum Electric and the immediate area in return for an otherwise free hand in unoccupied northern Corum west of the ninety-sixth meridian east. The following month, the kingdom launched Operation High Voltage, an airmobile assault upon Corum Electric in concert with the Mondosphere states of Greater Sangun and Etzeland: in the face of considerable political opposition, the operation nevertheless proved a resounding success, and the city- together with its power generation facilities and the accumulated materiel of the Corum Electric Division of the New Zimian War League- was successfully seized and integrated into the realm.

Lake Norton
Lake Norton Expedition
In 1723, the kingdom mounted an ambitious expedition into the heart of Corum, with the aim of reaching the city of Ossyo on the shore of Lake Norton. Although much was made of the expedition's scientific goals, pro-expansionist elements within the royal government hoped it would open up large swathes of former Thraci and New Zimian territory to subsequent annexation. Leaving Southman on 1.IV.1723, the expedition occupied the former Thraci cities of Dodan, Tumi and Anzo, made contact with the Imab-Adred-Nas of Imabia, before reaching in XIII.1723. Within a year of the expedition's successful conclusion, the regions of Milavanda, Hhotia, West Thracia, Imabia and Bayen were incorporated within the kingdom, which was quickly evolving into a major regional power in Northern Corum.
Further expansion
A brief campaign in early 1731 saw the kingdom annex the city of Afrikaania and Fort Pallisco, which was subsequently renamed Fort Amity in honour of renowned techno-archaeologist Amity Merrick. At the same time, the remaining area of unoccupied territory between the kingdom and the Cakari riyasat of Jaihabar was claimed as the Mina Forest, the personal domain of Queen Mina. Fifteen years later, the enclave of Corum Electric was further expanded to become the autonomous Realm of Western Corum, which became a self-governing state in free association with East Zimia and the Wallis Islands on 1.I.1752.

Geography
Geography
Located in northern Corum, the kingdom has a total area of 1,033,380 square kilometres, of which some 42,048 square kilometres are water. It is divided into two geographically separate areas. The greater part extends in a north-easterly direction from the eastern shore of Lake Norton to the southern shore of the Straits of Sangun. While the coastal plain is heavily settled, much of the interior is dominated by large areas of wilderness, most notably the Depths of Anatina and the Erlo Sinders Regional Forest; both are noted for their biodiversity and have the status of protected nature reserves. The Wallis Islands are a small archipelago just off the north-eastern coast; heavily urbanised, the islands were the most densely-populated region of the Bassarid Empire.

On the far west of Corum, the kingdom also occupies a small coastal exclave surrounding the city of Corum Electric.
The kingdom formerly included a coastal exclave surrounding the Corum Electric City in the far west of Corum; on 1.I.1752 this became the associated state of Western Corum.

In 1731, East Zimia and the Wallis Islands had a population of 19,426,366, divided between five major ethnic groups, as well as the non-human Imab-Adred-Nas, who enjoy full rights of citizenship. The majority of East Zimians, together with the inhabitants of Corum Electric, are of Kralian ancestry, whereas the Wallis Islanders are descended from Haifan settlers. The Pallisican language is used by both groups, as well as the Gamesman people who inhabit Bayen. The regions of Milavanda and Thracia are dominated by the Thraci people, and Hhotia by the closely-related Hhoti; both speak the Thraci language. Imabia is home to slightly over a million-and-a-half Imab-Adred-Nas.

The city of Corum Electric, together with the surrounding area, was occupied and incorporated within the kingdom as a third region in 1721; it subsequently became the associated state of Western Corum. Five more regions were added in 1724: Bayen, Milavanda, Hhotia, Imabia and Thracia. A ninth region, Afrikania, was established in 1731.

In 1724, a further advance saw the annexation of southern Bayen, together with the former Thraci regions of Milavanda, Hhoti, Outer Imabia and the western half of Inner Thracistan.
Two of the regions, Bayen and Imabia, enjoy a greater degree of autonomy.

East Zimia and the Wallis Islands, officially the Kingdom of Eastern Zimia and the Wallis Islands (Pallisican: Konedóama del Eazdeign Zíamaía aji hed Wallíos Islajíos; Sangunese: 東ジミア及およびワリス諸島王国 Higashi Zimia oyobi Warisu-shotō Ōkoku; Thraci: Doğu Zimya ve Vallis Adaları Krallığı), is a sovereign state in northern Corum. Proclaimed on 1.VII.1720 AN by the Southern Peoples' United Autonomous Government, a self-declared government-in-exile founded in neighbouring Greater Sangun, the kingdom considers itself a successor to Bassarid New Zimia, but initially was widely seen as a Sangunese puppet state. It was formally recognised as a member of the Mondosphere on 6.XII.1720 AN.

On 13.X.1723 AN, it was announced that the government would remain in Southman, which would become the de jure as well as de facto capital.

History

Background

The Haifo-Pallisican Imperial Trade Union entered a period of slow decline during the second decade of the eighteenth century AN. This decline accelerated dramatically in 1717 AN, as the weakening empire withdraw from its territories in Eura and Keltia, prompting the eruption of a series of destructive conflicts as neighbouring states sought to stabilise the degenerating situation.

By 1719 AN, it was apparent that the final collapse of the Bassarid Empire was imminent. Unwilling to see the adjoining Bassarid heartlands in northern Corum fall under the sway of elements hostile to the Raspur Pact, the regency council of the Empire of Greater Sangun began cultivating support within New Zimia's Region of the East and the neighbouring Protectorate of the Wallis Islands. Particularism was strong in both regions; the Wallis Islands had briefly enjoyed independence prior to their annexation by Passio-Corum, while the people of Southman had unsuccessfully sought autonomy within New Zimia.

On 10.VIII.1719 AN, representatives of various pro-Sangunese parties met in the Sangunese capital, Yasutomi, and agreed to form a "regime in waiting", the Southern People's United Autonomous Government.

Establishment of the kingdom

The discovery of a major Bassarid corsair armada massing in northern Corum, together with the subsequent Raspur Pact attack on 9.VI.1720 AN, prompted the SPUAG and its Sangunese handlers to accelerate their plans. It soon became apparent however that the SPUAG commanded rather less appeal than hoped: while the Wallis Islands enthusiastically declared for the fledgling regime, the cities of Cannassas and Southman initially declined to commit, responding to the overtures of their would-be rulers with an altogether ominous lack of enthusiasm.

An attempt to force the issue by landing troops of the Imperial Sangunese Army at Cannassas and Southman on 20.VI.1720 AN did little to help. Although the Sangunese were able to secure a foothold in both cities by the close of the day, their position remained precarious; this was particularly so in Cannassas, where the mood of the populace proved difficult to gauge.

The following days witnessed mixed fortunes. At sea, Bassarid corsairs frustrated attempts to reinforce and supply the Sangunese forces in Northern Corum, prompting the Imperial Sangunese Navy to intervene in an attempt to restore the sea lines of communication. The Sangunese and their Wallisian allies were however defeated in a bloody engagement with a larger corsair fleet on 23.VI.1720 AN. A Wallisian Bijeko-class attack vessel was sunk and three Indigo-class gunboats, together with a Sangunese battleship and cruiser, damaged; although three corsair vessels were reported destroyed, the severe losses forced the allied fleet to return to port, effectively surrendering control of the straits. However, on land, the Imperial Sangunese Army enjoyed considerably more success, securing control of both cities. Indeed, the display of military prowess by the occupation forces in Southman proved sufficient to persuade the local citizenry, who had long sought autonomy from the government in Lucien, to cast in their lot with the new regime.

In an effort to capitalise on this momentum and solidify their control over the region, the ISA induced the SPUAG to accept a Sangunese nominee as head of state, who was duly proclaimed monarch of the new Kingdom of Eastern Zimia and the Wallis Islands on 1.VII.1720 AN, under the regnal name of Mina II. Although some in the SPUAG voiced misgivings that such foreign interference would alienate local support and so reduce their credibility in the eyes of the populace, the latter soon rallied around the new government, which was widely seen as a preferable alternative to the chaos and conflict subsuming other former Bassarid territories.

Consolidation and initial expansion

Territorial expansion of East Zimia and the Wallis Islands, 1720 AN-1746 AN

On 7.IV.1721 AN, East Zimia and the Wallis Islands concluded a treaty with Çakaristan, in which the latter recognised the kingdom's claims to Corum Electric and the immediate area in return for an otherwise free hand in unoccupied northern Corum west of the ninety-sixth meridian east.

Lake Norton

In 1723 AN, the kingdom mounted an ambitious expedition into the heart of Corum, with the aim of reaching the city of Ossyo on the shore of Lake Norton. Although much was made of the expedition's scientific goals, pro-expansionist elements within the royal government hoped it would open up large swathes of former Thraci and New Zimian territory to subsequent annexation. Leaving Southman on 1.IV.1723 AN, the expedition occupied the former Thraci cities of Dodan, Tumi and Anzo, made contact with the Imab-Adred-Nas of Imabia, before reaching in XIII.1723 AN. Within a year of the expedition's successful conclusion, the regions of Milavanda, Hhotia, West Thracia, Imabia and Bayen were incorporated within the kingdom, which was quickly evolving into a major regional power in Northern Corum.

Further expansion

A brief campaign in early 1731 AN saw the kingdom annex the city of Afrikaania and Fort Pallisco, which was subsequently renamed Fort Amity in honour of renowned techno-archaeologist Amity Merrick. At the same time, the remaining area of unoccupied territory between the kingdom and the Cakari riyasat of Jaihabar was claimed as the Mina Forest, the personal domain of Queen Mina. Fifteen years later, the enclave of Corum Electric was further expanded to become the autonomous Realm of Western Corum, which became a self-governing state in free association with East Zimia and the Wallis Islands on 1.I.1752 AN.

Geography

Located in northern Corum, the kingdom has a total area of 1,251,648 square kilometres, of which some 42,048 square kilometres are water. It extends in a north-easterly direction from the eastern shore of Lake Norton to the southern shore of the Straits of Sangun.

The kingdom formerly included a coastal exclave surrounding the Corum Electric City in the far west of Corum; on 1.I.1752 AN this became the associated state of Western Corum.

In 1752 AN, East Zimia and the Wallis Islands had a population of 19,628,795, divided between five major ethnic groups, as well as the non-human Imab-Adred-Nas, who enjoy full rights of citizenship. The majority of East Zimians are of Kralian ancestry, whereas the Wallis Islanders are descended from Haifan settlers.

Istvanistani is widely spoken as a common lingua franca, and in more recent years, Sangunese has risen in popularity as a second language. Thraci was recognised as an official language in 1731 AN, alongside Istvanistani, Pallisican and Sangunese.

Religion

Roughly two-thirds of the population adhere to the Pallisican religion. The Alliance of the Higher Paths was initially favoured by the regime, in an attempt to detach the new state from the excesses of the Stripping Path, but by the 1750s AN it had been displaced by the newly-evolved Sombre Path.

Nidarosian Catholicism is also widely practiced.

Government and politics

East Zimia is formally a monarchy and retains many of the outward trappings of the defunct Kingdom of New Zimia. The current monarch is Queen Mina II, the only daughter of King Audon II of Nidaros and Grand Duchess Lystasia of Steerswick. Due to the queen's extreme youth, actual power initially resided with the Supreme Arbiter, former SPUAG chief executive Erlo Wallis, and the Eastern Courts Council, a cabinet-like body of regional officials and military commanders modelled on the Bassarid Council of Courts.

Regions

The kingdom originally comprised two former regions of Bassarid New Zimia, East Zimia proper (the former New Zimian Region of the East), and the Protectorate of the Wallis Islands; the latter includes the Erlo Sinders Regional Forest protected area.

The city of Corum Electric, together with the surrounding area, was occupied and incorporated within the kingdom as a third region in 1721 AN; it subsequently became the associated state of Western Corum. Five more regions were added in 1724 AN: Bayen, Milavanda, Hhotia, Imabia and Thracia. A ninth region, Afrikania, was established in 1731 AN.

Two of the regions, Bayen and Imabia, enjoy a greater degree of autonomy.

Foreign relations

East Zimia and the Wallis Islands is a member of the Mondosphere, but maintains its own foreign policy. Unlike many other Mondosphere states, it currently remains outside of the Raspur Pact.

Military

The kingdom's military is known as the East Zimian and Wallisian War League, or EZWWL, and was initially formed using materiel inherited from the Wallis Island Division of the New Zimian War League. The conquest of Corum Electric in 1721 AN resulted in a further unexpected windfall for the fledgling EZWWL, with almost all of the equipment of the Corum Electric Division falling to the kingdom intact.
