Amorian football, also known as gridiron football, is a full-contact team sport played on Micras. The game is played between two teams of eleven players on a rectangular field with goalposts at each end. Teams attempt to advance an oval-shaped football into their opponents' end zone to score a touchdown, or kick the ball through the goalposts to score a field goal.
The sport combines running, forward passing, tackling and tactical possession of territory. The offensive team advances the ball through a succession of plays beginning at the line of scrimmage, while the defensive team attempts to prevent advancement, force a loss of possession or recover the football. Unlike other major football codes such as rugby union and rugby league, Amorian football permits forward passing and extensive tactical substitutions between plays.
Amorian football is played at professional, collegiate, amateur and international levels. Although the sport is practised in several countries, Floria, Craitland and Mercury have been among its principal centres of organised competition with Floria being the most prominent. Other nations have established domestic leagues or participated in international tournaments, including Natopia and North Antarctica (now known as Florian Antarctica). Former nations such as Hoenn and Birgeshir also had established football scenes.
The international governing organisation is the Micras Gridiron Football Federation (MGFF), founded in 2018 as a division of the Fédération Micraise de Sport (FMS). The federation oversees international competition and is responsible for organising Test matches and the MGFF World Cup.
The sport made its debut at the 2018 Micras Games in Jingdao, where Hoenn won the inaugural men's tournament. Afterwards the Florian national team subsequently emerged as the dominant international side, winning both the 2020 and 2022 world championships.
At club level, the Florian Football League (FFL) is the largest and most commercially prominent professional competition. Established in 2018, it expanded to 32 franchises in 2024 and helped popularise the sport throughout Floria and Micras. Other domestic competitions include the Mercurian Amorian Football League, UCFL, the Etournian Football League and the Federal Amorian Football League.
The sport has also developed a substantial collegiate following, particularly in Floria, where the NCAF College Football Championship is among the country's leading sporting competitions and acts as an important pathway into professional football.
History
Early development
The precise origins of Amorian football on Micras have not been definitively established but its name derives from Amoria, a nation which was founded in 2007.
The game's early development varied considerably between countries. In some areas, Amorian football emerged as an established competitive sport with independent clubs and local competitions. Elsewhere, it initially attracted relatively small groups of enthusiasts and competed against more established forms of football scubas rugby league in both the Florian Republic and Mercury.
Craitland was an important early centre of organised Amorian football. The country possessed both professional and amateur clubs prior to the establishment of the Unified Craitish Football League in 2018. Four fully professional teams had previously been associated with the proposed MGFL, while several other clubs competed in regional amateur competitions. However unexpectedly the first documented domestic league to complete the transition into an organised national competition was the Etournian Football League (EFL), founded in 2017 played by 6 teams in tiny stadia across the island.
The existence of these clubs demonstrated that organised Amorian football predated the establishment of the sport's later international governing structures.
In the territories which subsequently became Floria, Amorian football was played on a relatively limited basis before the foundation of the Florian Republic in 2017. Rugby league and association football were considerably more popular, and no nationwide professional Amorian football competition existed.
Development of national leagues (2017–2019)
The late 2010s marked a significant period in the development of organised Amorian football.
In 2018, after the establishment of the EFL, the Florian National Football League was formally established. The new competition adopted a franchise-based system centred on major population centres and placed considerable emphasis on broadcasting, commercial sponsorship and stadium entertainment.
The competition initially followed traditional Amorian football rules but subsequently developed its own playing code, known as the Florian rules. The league was renamed the Florian Football League in 2019.
In only its second season, the FFL overtook the established Florian Super League, the most popular sports league in the Florian Republic at the time. The sport's growth was aided by television coverage, the development of regional rivalries and the attraction of spectators who had previously followed rugby league who became disillusioned after the highly published Florian rugby league civil war.
Elsewhere, Craitland pursued the creation of the Unified Craitish Football League (UCFL), intended to bring together professional and amateur clubs in a sixteen-team national competition.
In Birgeshir, the Birgesh Gridiron League (BGL) was established in December 2018. The semi-professional competition began play in 2019 and featured four clubs. The Mutfak Trolls won the inaugural Birgesh Bowl, defeating the Otaq Colossi 31–24.
Formation of the international federation
The Micras Gridiron Football Federation was founded in 2018 to administer international Amorian football.
The MGFF became a division of the Fédération Micraise de Sport and assumed responsibility for the organisation of international Test matches, tournaments and relations between affiliated national associations.
The federation recognised different levels of membership, distinguishing between full Test-playing nations and associate members participating in occasional international fixtures and competitions.
The organisation also supported proposals for interleague competition, including the Micras Bowl, which was intended to bring together champions of leading domestic competitions. This was initially proposed to between the champions of the Mercurian Amorian Football League and Unified Craitish Football League after the FFL declined to participate.
The development of an international governing body helped provide a common administrative framework for a sport which had previously developed through separate national and regional organisations.
The 2018 Micras Games
Amorian football was included in the inaugural Micras Games, hosted by Jingdao, becoming the first major international tournament organised under the newly established MGFF.
The competition was scheduled from 1 to 30 September 2018, with men's and women's tournaments featuring ten national teams each.
The men's competition consisted of two groups of five teams, with the group winners advancing to the gold-medal final and the runners-up contesting the bronze-medal match.
Craitland dominated Group A, winning all four fixtures, while Hoenn unexpectedly topped Group B ahead of the Florian Republic and Mercury.
In the final, played at Zijincheng Stadion on 30 September, Hoenn defeated Craitland 27–17 to become the inaugural men's Micras Games champion. North Antarctica on the other hand secured the bronze medal with a 24–20 victory over the Florian Republic.
| Medal | Nation | Result |
|---|---|---|
| Gold | Hoenn | Defeated Craitland 27–17 |
| Silver | Craitland | Runners-up |
| Bronze | North Antarctica | Defeated Florian Republic 24–20 |
Expansion during the early 2020s
The early 2020s saw the further development of domestic and international Amorian football. In Mercury, the Mercurian Amorian Football League (MAFL) commenced its inaugural season in September 2020 with twelve teams divided between two conferences.
The first season concluded with Araucaria Bowl I on 21 February 2021, when the Tow Law Torpedos defeated the Mercury City Cobras 13–10 at Galileo Ground.
The establishment of a major domestic professional competition reinforced Mercury's status as one of the sport's principal international centres.
In Floria, the growth of professional football encouraged the formation of additional competitions. The United Football Alliance (UFA) was established in 2020 as a spring football league operating beneath the FFL. It subsequently developed into a sixteen-team professional competition with formal affiliations to FFL franchises.
The Birgesh Gridiron League held its second and final championship in 2020, when the Mutfak Trolls defeated the Balkon Saurians 19–16. The competition was disbanded following Birgeshir's departure from Micras.
Other national football structures included the Ransenari Gridiron Football League in Ransenar and the Federal Amorian Football League in the Alduria-Wechua federation, the latter having been established in 1686 AN.
The first MGFF World Cups
The inaugural MGFF World Cup was held in 2020, establishing a dedicated international championship for national Amorian football teams. The competition featured a combination of Test-playing and affiliate nations and matches were held across several countries, with the leading teams progressing from group play into a postseason tournament. The Florian Republic emerged as the first world champion, defeating Craitland 30–17 in the Grand Final at Northcliff Stadium on 17 May 2020.
The subsequent tournament in 2022 was contested by twelve nations. The format again featured a group stage followed by qualification and elimination fixtures.
Floria would go onto successfully defending its title, defeating Craitland once again 34–28 in the Grand Final. Mercury finished third and Natopia fourth, the latter recording the best performance by an associate nation.
Floria's victories established the national team as the dominant international side during the world championship era.
| Year | Champions | Score | Runners-up | Third place |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 2020 | Florian Republic | 30–17 | Craitland | Mercury |
| 2022 | Floria | 34–28 | Craitland | Mercury |
Modern professional era
By the mid-2020s, Amorian football had developed into a significant professional spectator sport, with its strongest commercial presence in Floria.
The FFL expanded to 32 franchises in 202 and the league is divided equally between the Apollonian and National conferences. Its annual championship game, the President Bowl, has eventually become the most prominent sporting event in the country.
The league also developed a national television presence, with broadcasting arrangements involving Red Sports, Sportsworld, ESN and the FFL Network.
In 2025, the FFL returned to traditional Amorian football rules after several seasons using its distinctive Florian five-down system.
Underneath the professional game was a large support by an increasingly extensive development structure. The UFA provided opportunities for experienced players, undrafted college athletes and players seeking to return to FFL rosters.
At university level however is where the sport has thrived, the NCAF College Football Championship had expanded to forty major programmes by 2026 with the collegiate game attracting substantial attendances and television audiences, while providing the principal development pathway into the Florian professional leagues, primarily the FFL.
Rules and gameplay
The objective of Amorian football is to score more points than the opposing team by advancing the football into the opposition's end zone or kicking it through the goalposts.
The game is played by two teams of eleven players, with the team in possession designated the offence and the opposing team designated the defence.
Possession is organised into individual plays, or downs, each beginning with a snap from the line of scrimmage.
The offensive team may advance the ball by running with it or by throwing a legal forward pass. The defence attempts to prevent advancement through tackling, pass coverage and the disruption of offensive plays.
Possession may change following a punt, a score, an interception, a recovered fumble or a failure to gain the required yardage.
Field and equipment
Amorian football is generally played on a rectangular field marked with yard lines, sidelines, goal lines and end zones.
A traditional field measures 100 yards between the goal lines, with an additional end zone at each end. Goalposts are positioned for field-goal attempts and conversion kicks.
Players wear protective equipment including helmets and shoulder pads, together with numbered jerseys and specialist footwear.
The football is elongated and pointed at each end, allowing it to be carried, kicked or passed.
Field markings, goalpost dimensions and equipment standards may vary according to the regulations adopted by individual leagues.
Downs and possession
In the traditional code, the offensive team has four downs in which to advance the football ten yards.
If the required distance is achieved, the offence receives a new series of downs. If it fails, possession normally transfers to the opposing team at the point where the final play ended.
Teams may instead choose to punt the ball to the opposition or attempt a field goal.
The down system gives Amorian football its distinctive tactical structure. Offensive teams must balance the immediate objective of gaining yardage against the need to protect possession and maintain favourable field position.
An additional consideration is the clock, which affects the management of possessions late in each half.
Scoring
The principal scoring methods in traditional Amorian football are touchdowns, field goals, conversions and safeties.
| Method | Points | Description |
|---|---|---|
| Touchdown | 6 | Scored when a player legally possesses the football in the opposing team's end zone. |
| Conversion kick | 1 | A successful kick through the goalposts following a touchdown. |
| Two-point conversion | 2 | A successful offensive play into the end zone following a touchdown. |
| Field goal | 3 | A successful kick through the goalposts during normal play. |
| Safety | 2 | Awarded when the defending team causes the offensive team to be downed or otherwise commit a qualifying infraction in its own end zone. |
Individual competitions such as the UFA have introduced alternative scoring regulations. These include different conversion options, amended field-goal values and modified overtime procedures.
Player positions
Amorian football features specialised offensive, defensive and kicking units.
Offensive players include the quarterback, running backs, wide receivers, tight ends and offensive linemen. The quarterback normally directs the offence and is responsible for the majority of forward passes.
Defensive players include defensive linemen, linebackers, cornerbacks and safeties. Their duties include defending against the run, pressuring the quarterback, covering receivers and attempting to force turnovers.
Special teams are responsible for kickoffs, punts, field-goal attempts and returns. These units include kickers, punters, long snappers and return specialists.
Although the basic positional structure is common across the sport, formations and tactical systems vary between competitions and coaching philosophies.
Governance
Micras Gridiron Football Federation
The Micras Gridiron Football Federation is the principal international governing organisation for Amorian football.
Founded in 2018, the federation operates as a division of the Fédération Micraise de Sport and is responsible for the administration of international matches and tournaments.
The federation maintains a distinction between full members, which possess Test-playing status, and associate members, which may participate in occasional international fixtures and competitions.
The principal international competition organised under its authority is the MGFF World Cup.
Membership
The MGFF has included national associations from several regions of Micras. Membership has changed over time as nations have joined, departed or undergone political reorganisation.
The federation's recorded full Test-playing members include:
Associate members listed in MGFF records include Etourney, Florian Antarctica, Natopia, New Sussex, Nova English Korea, Tiana and Qavaqaqqaqqaniitqeqertaq.
Former members include Alduria, Birgeshir, Hoenn, Nijima, Neo Patrova, North Antarctica and the River Warriors.
International competitions
MGFF World Cup
The MGFF World Cup is the principal international championship of Amorian football.
The tournament brings together national teams representing MGFF member nations and provides a championship separate from domestic professional and collegiate competitions.
The first recorded tournament was held in 2020 and was won by the Florian Republic. Floria retained the title in 2022.
Domestic competitions
Amorian football is organised through a variety of domestic league systems, ranging from professional franchise competitions to amateur and university football.
The structure of each national system varies according to local sporting traditions, commercial development and the number of participating clubs.

Florian Football League
The Florian Football League is the leading professional Amorian football competition in Floria.
Established in 2018 as the Florian National Football League, the competition originally followed traditional Amorian football rules before introducing the Florian rules.
The FFL consists of 32 franchises divided into the Apollonian and National conferences, each containing four divisions.
Its championship is determined through a postseason competition culminating in the President Bowl, played between the champions of the two conferences.
The FFL has become the country's most commercially successful sporting competition, attracting substantial television audiences, sponsorship revenue and attendances.
Mercurian Amorian Football League
The Mercurian Amorian Football League is Mercury's principal domestic Amorian football competition.
Its inaugural 2020 season featured twelve teams divided between Northern and Southern conferences.
The first championship was decided in Araucaria Bowl I, when the Tow Law Torpedos defeated the Mercury City Cobras 13–10 on 21 February 2021.
Craitland
Amorian football has an established history in Craitland, including professional clubs and regional amateur competitions.
The Unified Craitish Football League was proposed in 2018 following the dormancy of the earlier MGFL project.
The competition brought together four established professional teams and twelve additional clubs, organised into four geographic divisions.
Etourney
The Etournian Football League was founded in 2017 and is the principal professional competition in Etourney and the oldest Amorian football league in the world.
Its recorded membership consists of five teams, including the St. Edwin's Dolphins, Etourney Mafia, Southern Stingers, Wilton Rockets and Tanbury Falcons.
The competition operates a regular season followed by the Etourney Bowl, contested by the two leading teams after the regular season.
College and amateur football
Collegiate football
College Amorian football is particularly prominent in Floria, where university programmes attract substantial crowds and national media attention.
The modern NCAF College Football Championship was established in 2018 following the reorganisation of existing university and regional competitions.
The University of Blackoak won the inaugural national championship and the competition subsequently developed into a forty-programme system organised around four principal conferences: the Big South, FLO-12, Southeastern and Frontier conferences.
The season culminates in the College Football Playoff, which expanded to sixteen teams in 2026.
Unlike the professional FFL, college football has traditionally been associated with university identities, historic rivalries, marching bands, student sections and regional sporting traditions.
Professional players and development
Professional Amorian football places considerable emphasis on player recruitment, coaching and specialist development.
In Floria, the FFL Draft provides a major route for eligible collegiate players to enter the professional game.
Players who are not selected in the draft may seek contracts as undrafted free agents or join alternative professional competitions, including the United Football Alliance.
The UFA maintains formal affiliations with FFL franchises, allowing clubs to develop prospective players and giving experienced professionals opportunities to continue their careers.
Professional teams also maintain specialised coaching staffs and player development departments responsible for offensive strategy, defensive organisation, physical conditioning and positional training.
Culture and popularity
Spectator culture
Amorian football has developed distinctive spectator traditions, particularly in countries with established professional and collegiate competitions. These include pre-match gatherings, organised supporter groups, marching bands, team songs, mascots, and large-scale stadium entertainment.
The frequent pauses between plays allow spectators to follow tactical decisions, substitutions, and changes in field position. Furthermore, supporter identities are often closely associated with individual cities, universities, and regions.
Floria
Amorian football is the leading spectator sport in Floria. Its rapid rise can be attributed to the establishment of the FFL in 2018, which led to increased national television audiences and commercial investment.
In 2019, football overtook rugby league in popularity, although association football, rugby league, and other major sports still maintain significant followings.
The President Bowl has become the country’s most prominent annual sporting event. College football is also particularly popular, with major universities attracting substantial attendances and maintaining traditional rivalries.
The sport’s popularity extends beyond urban and rural regions, with professional franchises and university programmes often drawing supporters from far beyond their immediate local areas.
