North Antarctica was an island micronation situated south of the continent Eura, situated in southern Micras. The capital, New Livingston, was also the largest city on the island. There are four other major cities in North Antarctica, Brabantia, Murcia, New Amsterdam, and Countryside. North Antarctica had very close ties to the island of Lucerne, which was a dependency of Mercury.
History
Originally used by Stormark as a research outpost, the island was abandoned in 1891. However, in 1911, the now dead nation of Tarragona was founded on the south east part of the island and a Spanish influence was the main culture of the nation. The country lasted until 1948, when a revolution occurred from the non-Hispanic population and the president was overthrown. This was when the country of North Antarctica was born. The capital was moved from Tarragona to New Livingston, and the new government put in place was a Grand Duchy. The first Grand Duke, Edward Winterburn, ruled very strictly, and the country expanded to encompass the whole island. However, the Hispanic and Black majority and other immigrants were viewed as a lower class, and only whites were allowed to participate in some jobs and politics. When Winterburn died in 1974, Patric Beauregard, his nephew, took power. Even more strict than his father, Beauregard was a very racist politician and promoted only white opportunities. Under his rule, North Antarctica became one of the leading exporters of mined goods on the planet, and the economy soared. However, the non-white region of Afrikaana wanted independence, beginning in 1991. Beauregard was lenient and granted them a degree of autonomy due to the fact that they threatened war. Four years later, Beauregard was assassinated while on his way home from the theater. His son, Michael, became his successor and quickly made steps to democratize the country. He removed himself from the position of Grand Duke and established the country as a republic. In 1996 the first elections were held, and Beauregard was elected president. Although differing heavily from his fathers political sphere, Beauregard still did not believe in racial equality. As such, only whites were allowed to vote. It was during these years that North Antartica became a more powerful nation. Beauregard served two successive 6 year terms, and stepped down from office in 2008. For the first time in the country's history, all citizens were allowed to vote after Congress passed 14th amendment in 2007, which granted racial equality. The new president, Martin Konstantinov, was elected that year, the first president to be elected by all races. Since then, North Antarctica has become a popular winter tourist destination, and it's economy and research facilities have become very highly rated.
Geography
North Antarctica is an medium sized island close to the South Pole. It is very close to the smaller island of Lucerne, which is a Mercurian dependency. The two islands are separated by the Lucerne Channel, which runs between the two landmasses. Haet Bay lies just south of the channel, jutting into the island. The country is very flat, with the highest point being only 550 meters above sea level. The largest river, the Brabant, runs between the two cities of Countryside and Brabantia, and it's tributaries flow all across the western portion of the island.
Administrative Divisions
There are three administrative regions in North Antarctica, along with one autonomous region, Afrikaana, and one federal district, New Livingston. Economy
North Antarctica's economy is made up of a large mining and research sector. The island is one of the largest exporter of uranium and the fifth highest producer and miner of iron ore. Along with this, the country is a global center for research facilities due to it's climate. The NLSE is one of Apollonia and Eura's largest stock exchanges, with traders filling the halls daily. A new economic sector has sprung up since 2008, with tourism, especially in ski resorts like Alp and Süd, becoming a dominant economic force. Further diversifying the economy is the newly established wine and beer business, with both being produced along the north and east coast. Although NAPI is in a relatively cold climate region, there are still areas where wine and beer are produced in large quantities. Another sector that has recently sprung up is the manufacturing sector, which now employs a large number of Hispanic and Black people and is very successful. A substantial fishing market along the north coast is another economic area on the island. The country has little poverty, with only 3% under the poverty line, and the Napian Dollar is relatively stable with an exchange rate of five dollars to one Craitish dollar.
