The Imperial Democratic Party (IDP) is the dominant political party in Ransenar. The party has governed continuously since Ransenar's independence in 1673, either alone or in coalition with junior partners. It considers itself the heir of Aldricism, the ideology derived from Hartmut Aldric's positions during his service as Steward of Shireroth.

The Imperial Democratic Party (IDP) is the Aldricist ruling party of Ransenar. Originally founded in Ransenar in 1660, it later spread to the rest of Shireroth, and after Shireroth's Kalirion Fracture and Ransenar's independence in 1672, the IDP remains in Shireroth, too, and in Elwynn as the Democratic Party of Elwynn.
The IDP originated as a branch of the Imperial Democratic Party of Shireroth, which Sean O'Callaghan founded in Elsyran, Goldshire in 1659 to support Hartmut Aldric's campaign for Steward. ==History==
Imperial Democratic Party (Shireroth)
Sean O'Callaghan founded the Imperial Democratic Party in Elsyran, Goldshire in 1659. The party's purpose was to support Hartmut Aldric, Duke of Calezi, in his campaign for Steward of Shireroth. O'Callaghan built the organization around Aldric's popularity and policy positions, which coalesced into the ideology later called Aldricism. The party grew rapidly. By the mid-1660s it had become one of the largest in both the Folksraad and the Adelsraad of the Imperial Republic.

Aldric himself was not a party member at its founding. He had stood for the Folksraad under an independent banner, hoping to avoid factional entanglements. The IDP's endorsement of his Steward campaign in 1663 drew him into the party's orbit, and he assumed leadership in 1665. Under his direction the party advanced its core principles: expansion of individual rights, economic liberalism, social mobility, pragmatism over populism, civic nationalism, and free trade.

Aldric was assassinated in Brookshire on 12.VIII.1667. The party continued under new leadership, but the Shirerithian state began its long deterioration. By the early 1670s, central authority had weakened to the point that the IDP's local organization became more reliable than Imperial institutions in much of Goldshire.

The Kalirion Fracture and independence (1673)
Kalirion Fracture
As Shirekeep's control collapsed, the IDP's political network assumed administrative functions in Ran, parts of Ynnraile, and Lunaris. The party machine was led by O'Callaghan and a group of Goldshirians that included Ruadh Aldric, brother of the late Steward. They commanded support from political interest groups, businesses, and a corps of loyal supporters. While criminal bands ravaged other parts of Goldshire, IDP-dominated areas maintained order through party organization and the remnants of Imperial institutions.

The party collected Imperial taxes and emphasized loyalty to the infant Kaiseress Salome, positioning itself as the legitimate continuation of Shirerithian governance rather than a revolutionary movement. This stance was reflected in the IDP's networks in Elwynn, which later became the Democratic Party of Elwynn.

Facing threats from the Guttuli Protectorate, the Iron Company, and the Revolutionary Army of Crisco, the IDP called a series of Ransenari Congresses to organize a new state. The first Congress met in Goldfield and debated a constitution for months without resolution. The second and third Congresses met in Goldshire Hamlet. Delegates agreed they wished to remain part of Shireroth but could not reconcile competing visions for the future.

The third Congress voted to proclaim the Kingdom of Ransenar in 1673. To reassure those who favored continued union with Shireroth, the Kaiseress Salome was proclaimed Queen but established as a powerless figurehead. A Lord High Steward would head the government, selected by the popularly elected Ransenari Congress. O'Callaghan became the first Lord High Steward. The Congress also resolved that Ransenar would join the Raspur Pact, securing financial, military, and material support from the Sovereign Confederation, the Elwynnese Realm, and the Black Legions.

The Goldshirian Tiger and economic crisis (1673-1682)
The IDP governed during the period of rapid economic growth known as the Goldshirian Tiger (1673-1679). Foreign direct investment, large infrastructure programs, and agricultural exports to Alduria and the UGB drove average growth of 10.6% annually. The party's economic policies emphasized market mechanisms, free trade within the Raspur Pact, and state investment in infrastructure inherited from the days of King Ryker.

The economy reversed sharply in 1679. The Second Amokolian War depressed foreign confidence while Alduria's acquisition of West Baatharz contracted demand for Ransenari agricultural products. A property bubble burst. GDP contracted 14% and unemployment reached 16% by mid-1680. The Grand Market Financial Corporation, Ransenar's largest rural real estate investment trust, filed for bankruptcy in I.1680. The Bank of Goldfield began blocking hedge fund withdrawals.

Lord High Steward O'Callaghan presented a rescue package to Congress in VII.1680. The proposal included purchases of distressed assets from financial institutions, abandonment of the Ransenari Erb's currency peg to the Sovereign Avak, aid programs for agribusiness, and a moratorium on foreclosures. Opposition groups initially rejected the package. Regent and Lord Protector Ruadh Aldric lobbied Congress heavily, and the proposal eventually passed. The recession ended in late 1682 according to the Ransenari Organization for Public Economic Research.

The crisis shaped the party's economic thinking. The IDP developed what scholars call Stabilization Aldricism, emphasizing institutional strength and economic resilience over pure growth metrics. This approach featured countercyclical fiscal policies, strategic industrial planning, public-private partnerships, and investment in social infrastructure.

Scandal and political turbulence (1682-1706)
1682-1683 cash-for-peerages scandal
The 1682-1683 cash-for-peerages scandal damaged the party's reputation. Revelations emerged that eight wealthy businessmen who had lent the IDP a combined R€47 million for the 1683 campaign were personally nominated by the Lord High Steward for life peerages. O'Callaghan denied involvement when questioned in Parliamentary Questions in XII.1684. His chief fundraiser, Ophir Percival Roger, was arrested attempting to flee to Constancia and maintained his innocence. The Goldfield Constabulary opened an inquiry and questioned O'Callaghan and Lord Protector Ruadh Aldric as witnesses in XIV.1684. O'Callaghan appointed an independent Inspector-General to investigate, the first such appointment in Ransenari history. The IDP won the 1683 election despite the scandal but governed under a cloud. The party formed coalitions with the Agrarian Party of Ransenar beginning in 1688, bringing rural interests into government.

In 1692, the IDP government established the Council for the Integration of Ransenar and Nouvelle Alexandrie to explore closer ties with the federation, including possible Ransenari membership. The Ransenari Liberation Party attacked the initiative as a surrender of sovereignty. Public opinion turned hostile. The Council was disbanded before the 1693 general election, and the IDP lost ground. Robert O'Toole became Lord Chief Steward in 1693.

The 1703 election produced a hung Congress. The Coalition for Ransenari Progress surged to second place. The IDP formed a Unity Coalition with the CRP and the Buffalo Party to govern. This coalition collapsed before the 1706 election, which the IDP won with a slim majority for the first time in several elections.

Constitutional reforms and accession to the Benacian Union (1706-1711)
Accession of Ransenar to the Benacian Union
Republican sentiment had grown steadily, and the Ransenari Liberation Party and Coalition for Ransenari Progress attacked the IDP and its allies. With support from the Nationalist & Humanist Party and the Buffalo Party of Ransenar, the IDP pushed through constitutional reforms to address the political crisis. The Throne and Crown of Ransenar Act defined the monarchy's legal basis and established the Crown Jeweler's Office, the Throne Trust, and the Royal Household. The Severance of the Throne Act formally removed Queen Salome I and her descendants from the Ransenari throne. Congress then debated offering the Crown to Vadoma I of Western Natopia (who indicated conditional acceptance), Francis Joseph IV of Alexandria (who declined), and Manco Capac I of Nouvelle Alexandrie (who also declined).

No consensus candidate emerged from outside Ransenar. Support coalesced around Ruadh Aldric, who had served as Regent and Lord Protector since independence. Even sections of the republican opposition backed his candidacy. The Benacian Union and Nouvelle Alexandrie provided financial support. The Succession to the Throne Act granted the throne to Ruadh Aldric, his heirs, and successors. Political instability continued to erode public faith in democratic institutions while the republican tide receded. Support for joining the Benacian Union with autonomous powers grew. The Ransenari Congress passed the Accession to the Benacian Union Resolution, declaring the official sense of Congress was to initiate a process for accession by 1715.

The 1711 general election was fought over Ransenar's future. The N&H won an outright majority for the first time as the IDP stumbled and the Liberation Party surged. The referendum offered ranked-choice voting with a 51% threshold for binding results. Support for joining the Benacian Union reached 57.8%. The Treaty of Goldfield was signed on 12.IX.1711 and entered into force on 24.XV.1711. The treaty preserved the democratic characteristics of the Ransenari Congress for internal domestic arrangements. Willihard Cason served as Lord Chief Steward during the accession ceremony.

Integration and war (1711-1752)
The IDP adapted to governance within the Benacian Union framework. In 1714, the government reorganized into a Civil Executive comprising a presidency and four commissions to align with the Charter of the Benacian Union. The party retained its dominant position in Ransenari politics, now competing primarily for control of domestic policy while Union institutions handled foreign relations, defense, and monetary affairs.

During the Shiro-Benacian War (1733-1741), the IDP government managed Ransenar's contribution to the Union war effort. The realm served as the Union's agricultural base, and its industrial capacity contributed to military production. The party's wartime leadership strengthened its position.

King Ruadh I died in III.1752 after a 41-year reign. Cosgrach I succeeded him and appointed Eamon Brannigan as Lord Chief Steward. Brannigan, a distant relative of founder Sean O'Callaghan, had served in the Ransenari Grouping of Forces during the war and rose through the O'Callaghan school. The government is revising Ransenar's constitution to comply with the reformed Charter of the Benacian Union.

Ideology
The IDP considers itself the heir of Aldricism, though the party's interpretation has evolved since the ideology's founding. During the formative period (1659-1667), Aldricism emphasized expansion of individual rights and freedoms, economic liberalism, economic and social mobility, pragmatism over populism, civic nationalism, and free trade.

After the Kalirion Fracture, the Aldricist parties of Shireroth diverged. The Democratic Party of Elwynn and the Imperial Democratic Party of Shireroth moved toward the center-right. The Ransenari IDP and Aldricist parties abroad, such as the Union Democratic Movement in Natopia, adopted more center-left interpretations. Scholars term this the Aldricist Spectrum.

The economic crisis of 1679-1682 further shaped Ransenari Aldricism. The party developed Stabilization Aldricism, which prioritizes institutional strength and economic resilience. This variant emphasizes countercyclical fiscal policy, strategic industrial planning, public-private partnerships, and investment in social infrastructure.

Following accession to the Benacian Union, the IDP incorporated elements of Humanism into its platform, particularly within the Unionist school. The fusion of Aldricism and Humanism distinguishes the modern IDP from its pre-accession form and from Aldricist parties in other nations.

Organization
The IDP maintains organizational structures at the national, county, and local levels. The National Congress meets annually and elects the party chairman, though effective leadership rests with the Lord Chief Steward when the party controls the government. The National Executive Committee manages party affairs between congresses.

County organizations select candidates for Ransenari Congress seats through internal primaries in which school affiliation shapes competition. Local ward committees maintain the grassroots networks that have sustained party dominance since independence. These committees provide services to constituents, distribute patronage, and mobilize voters during elections.

The party participates in the Aldricist and Neoliberal Conference, the international body that coordinates Aldricist parties across nations. The Conference publishes the quarterly journal Aldricist Review, which provides a forum for theoretical development and policy debate.

Internal schools
Four factions called schools compete within the IDP for leadership positions, candidate selection, and policy direction. The schools provide channels for different interests and ideological tendencies within the party. Ambitious politicians compete within the IDP rather than against it, and policy debates occur inside party structures. This arrangement sustains one-party dominance while permitting genuine internal competition.

The O'Callaghan school has historically dominated the party. Named for founder Sean O'Callaghan, it combines Aldricism with Humanism in a populist, pragmatic, and technocratic program. The school advocates an efficient command economy with communal elements that emphasize community solidarity and collective welfare within market structures. It draws support from the civil service, organized labor, and urban professionals. Lord Chief Steward Eamon Brannigan, a distant relative of O'Callaghan, leads this faction.

The Aldric school represents conservative and monarchist tendencies with ties to old Goldshirian nobility. It emphasizes continuity with pre-independence traditions and skepticism toward rapid modernization. Its base lies in rural counties and aristocratic families.

The Unionist school takes a harder-line Humanist position, advocating closer integration with Benacian Union institutions and reduced Ransenari autonomy. Former members of the Nationalist & Humanist Party joined this school after their party's electoral decline following the 1711 referendum. Its influence remains strongest among security establishment figures and those who favor deeper conformity with Union norms.

The Mercantile school favors expanded market mechanisms within the command economy framework. It draws support from the Goldfield Bourse, the banking sector, and export industries. The school advocates trade liberalization within the Raspur Pact and reduced regulatory burdens on business.

Electoral history
The IDP has won every general election since Ransenar's independence, though margins have varied and coalition partners have changed. The party's dominance rests on its organizational depth, patronage networks, and the structural advantages of the electoral system rather than suppression of opposition.

The Imperial Democratic Party (IDP) is the dominant political party in Ransenar. The party has governed continuously since Ransenar's independence in 1673 AN, either alone or in coalition with junior partners. It considers itself the heir of Aldricism, the ideology derived from Hartmut Aldric's positions during his service as Steward of Shireroth.

The IDP originated as a branch of the Imperial Democratic Party of Shireroth, which Sean O'Callaghan founded in Elsyran, Goldshire in 1659 AN to support Hartmut Aldric's campaign for Steward. Following the Kalirion Fracture and Aldric's assassination in 1667 AN, the Ransenari branch maintained its organizational structure while Shireroth collapsed around it. O'Callaghan and Ruadh Aldric, brother of the late Steward, led the party's political machine as it filled the vacuum left by the disintegrating Imperial government. The IDP called the series of Ransenari Congresses that drafted the constitution and proclaimed the Kingdom of Ransenar in 1673 AN.

Four internal factions called schools compete for control of the party. The O'Callaghan school has historically dominated, combining Aldricism with Humanism in a populist, pragmatic, and technocratic program. The Aldric, Unionist, and Mercantile schools represent conservative, integrationist, and business interests respectively. Political competition in Ransenar takes place primarily within the IDP between these schools rather than between parties.

History

Sean O'Callaghan founded the Imperial Democratic Party in Elsyran, Goldshire in 1659 AN.

The IDP's endorsement of his Steward campaign in 1663 AN drew him into the party's orbit, and he assumed leadership in 1665 AN. Under his direction the party advanced its core principles: expansion of individual rights, economic liberalism, social mobility, pragmatism over populism, civic nationalism, and free trade.

Aldric was assassinated in Brookshire on 12.VIII.1667 AN. The party continued under new leadership, but the Shirerithian state began its long deterioration. By the early 1670s, central authority had weakened to the point that the IDP's local organization became more reliable than Imperial institutions in much of Goldshire.

The Kalirion Fracture and independence (1673)

The third Congress voted to proclaim the Kingdom of Ransenar in 1673 AN.

The IDP governed during the period of rapid economic growth known as the Goldshirian Tiger (1673 AN-1679 AN).

The economy reversed sharply in 1679 AN. The Second Amokolian War depressed foreign confidence while Alduria's acquisition of West Baatharz contracted demand for Ransenari agricultural products. A property bubble burst. GDP contracted 14% and unemployment reached 16% by mid-1680 AN. The Grand Market Financial Corporation, Ransenar's largest rural real estate investment trust, filed for bankruptcy in I.1680 AN. The Bank of Goldfield began blocking hedge fund withdrawals.

Lord High Steward O'Callaghan presented a rescue package to Congress in VII.1680 AN. The recession ended in late 1682 AN according to the Ransenari Organization for Public Economic Research.

The crisis shaped the party's economic thinking. The IDP developed what scholars call Stabilization Aldricism, emphasizing institutional strength and economic resilience over pure growth metrics. This approach featured countercyclical fiscal policies, strategic industrial planning, public-private partnerships, and investment in social infrastructure.

Scandal and political turbulence (1682-1706)

The 1682-1683 cash-for-peerages scandal damaged the party's reputation. Revelations emerged that eight wealthy businessmen who had lent the IDP a combined R€47 million for the 1683 campaign were personally nominated by the Lord High Steward for life peerages. O'Callaghan denied involvement when questioned in Parliamentary Questions in XII.1684 AN. His chief fundraiser, Ophir Percival Roger, was arrested attempting to flee to Constancia and maintained his innocence. The Goldfield Constabulary opened an inquiry and questioned O'Callaghan and Lord Protector Ruadh Aldric as witnesses in XIV.1684 AN. O'Callaghan appointed an independent Inspector-General to investigate, the first such appointment in Ransenari history. The IDP won the 1683 AN election despite the scandal but governed under a cloud. The party formed coalitions with the Agrarian Party of Ransenar beginning in 1688 AN, bringing rural interests into government.

In 1692 AN, the IDP government established the Council for the Integration of Ransenar and Nouvelle Alexandrie to explore closer ties with the federation, including possible Ransenari membership. The Ransenari Liberation Party attacked the initiative as a surrender of sovereignty. Public opinion turned hostile. The Council was disbanded before the 1693 general election, and the IDP lost ground. Robert O'Toole became Lord Chief Steward in 1693 AN.

The Ransenari Congress passed the Accession to the Benacian Union Resolution, declaring the official sense of Congress was to initiate a process for accession by 1715 AN.

The Treaty of Goldfield was signed on 12.IX.1711 AN and entered into force on 24.XV.1711 AN. The treaty preserved the democratic characteristics of the Ransenari Congress for internal domestic arrangements. Willihard Cason served as Lord Chief Steward during the accession ceremony.

Integration and war (1711-1752)

The IDP adapted to governance within the Benacian Union framework. In 1714 AN, the government reorganized into a Civil Executive comprising a presidency and four commissions to align with the Charter of the Benacian Union. The party retained its dominant position in Ransenari politics, now competing primarily for control of domestic policy while Union institutions handled foreign relations, defense, and monetary affairs.

During the Shiro-Benacian War (1733 AN-1741 AN), the IDP government managed Ransenar's contribution to the Union war effort. The realm served as the Union's agricultural base, and its industrial capacity contributed to military production. The party's wartime leadership strengthened its position.

King Ruadh I died in III.1752 AN after a 41-year reign.

During the formative period (1659 AN-1667 AN), Aldricism emphasized expansion of individual rights and freedoms, economic liberalism, economic and social mobility, pragmatism over populism, civic nationalism, and free trade.

The economic crisis of 1679 AN-1682 AN further shaped Ransenari Aldricism.

Former members of the Nationalist & Humanist Party joined this school after their party's electoral decline following the 1711 AN referendum.

Pre-accession elections (1673-1711)

Election Result Lord High Steward
1673 IDP majority Sean O'Callaghan
1678 IDP majority Sean O'Callaghan
1683 IDP majority (scandal) Sean O'Callaghan

O'Callaghan led the party from its founding until 1685 AN, when he stepped down amid the cash-for-peerages scandal. Willihard Cason succeeded him and governed through the economic recovery period. Robert O'Toole took office in 1693 AN and led the party through the turbulent decade of constitutional reform and accession to the Benacian Union.

Post-accession elections (1716-1751)

Following accession to the Benacian Union, elections continued under the preserved democratic characteristics guaranteed by the Treaty of Goldfield. The IDP initially governed in coalition with the Nationalist & Humanist Party and Golden Order Party as Ransenar integrated into Union structures. By the mid-1720s, the party had recovered its dominant position and absorbed most former N&H members into its Unionist school.

Election Result Lord Chief Steward
1716 IDP-N&H-Golden Order coalition Robert O'Toole
1721 IDP majority Robert O'Toole
1726 IDP supermajority Fintan Mulcahy
1731 IDP supermajority Fintan Mulcahy
1736 IDP supermajority Donal Rafferty
1741 IDP supermajority (wartime) Donal Rafferty
1746 IDP supermajority Marcus Spode
1751 IDP supermajority Marcus Spode

O'Toole retired in 1724 AN after more than three decades in senior party positions. Fintan Mulcahy of the O'Callaghan school succeeded him and consolidated IDP dominance during the integration period. Donal Rafferty took office in 1735 AN and led Ransenar through the Shiro-Benacian War. Marcus Spode of the Mercantile school became Lord Chief Steward in 1747 AN and oversaw post-war economic recovery.

King Ruadh I died in III.1752 AN. Cosgrach I appointed Eamon Brannigan of the O'Callaghan school as Lord Chief Steward. No general election has been held since the succession; the next election is expected by 1756 AN unless called earlier.

Current composition

As of 1752 AN, the IDP holds 184 of 317 seats in the Ransenari Congress. With coalition partners the Golden Order Party (32 seats) and Agrarian Party of Ransenar (38 seats), the governing coalition controls 254 seats, approximately 80% of Congress.
