The Sovereign Confederation national football team is the football team which currently represents the Benacian Union autonomous region of the Sovereign Confederation, and previously represented the Elwynnese autonomous region and independent nation of the same name. It is a member of the WMFA.
History
The team was founded in mid-2019 after the Sovereign Confederation successfully claimed on Micras after seceding from Shireroth. Soon afterwards, the team competed in the inaugural Vulture Cup, finishing bottom of their group with one point.
The Sovereign Confederation was annexed by Elwynn in early 2020, but maintained its separate FMF membership. In the year's Benacia Cup qualifiers, the team finished third in their four-team group with six points.
Ahead of the 2021 World Cup qualifiers, in late 2020, the team entered the inaugural edition of the Raspur Pact Nations League and competed in its bottom tier, finishing top of their four-team group with 13 points to be promoted. In the qualifiers, the team placed third in their five-team group with twelve points.
In early 2022, prior to the year's Benacia Cup qualifiers, the Sovereign Confederation became an autonomous region of the Benacian Union following the merger of Elwynn with the Unified Governorates and retained its FMF membership. In the qualifiers themselves, the team finished second in their five-team group with 16 points, behind Cisamarra in the automatic qualification spot on goal difference, to advance to the play-offs, where they beat Batavia on away goals after tying on aggregate to reach the finals. At the Benacia Cup, they were eliminated in the group stage after finishing third in their group with three points. In late 2022, the Sovereign Confederation competed in the inaugural All-Union Festival Tournament, finishing second in their group with four points to advance by virtue of goal difference. After beating Elwynn on penalties in the semi-final, they were beaten by the Unified Governorates in the final to finish second overall.
The 2023 FMF World Cup qualification rounds saw the team finish second in their five-team group with 18 points, leading to a place in the play-offs, where they beat Shireroth on penalties in the first round and Nova English Korea in the second to qualify for the finals. There they were eliminated at the first hurdle after placing fourth in Group A with three points.
After bidding successfully to host the 2024 Benacia Cup, the team bypassed the qualifying rounds and also received an automatic berth in the year's FMF Confederations Cup, where they placed bottom of the hosts' group with four points. In the Benacia Cup finals, the team advanced to the knock-out stages after finishing second in their four-team group with four points, ahead of Mishalacia by virtue of goal difference, where they lost 2–0 to Sanama in the semi-finals before being bested by Tellia to secure fourth place in the tournament.
