Sanaman nationality and residency law

Sanaman nationality and residency law is a federal matter. Under the Second Republic, citizenship is granted by the federal government in accordance with federal law. A citizen of Sanama is also a citizen of the province, canton and locality where they reside. Residency and leave to remain legislation is also a federal matter.

Citizenship

Acquisition of citizenship

A person can acquire Sanaman citizenship in a number of ways. Multiple citizenship is not allowed, when a person acquires Sanaman citizenship he or she is required to renounce any former citizenships. However, multiple citizenships with freedom of movement countries is allowed. Until 1691 citizenship applicants were required to declare Sanaman, Istvanistani or Cisamarrese as their first language. To be granted citizenship one of the following criteria must be met:

1. Be a legal Shirerithian resident on independence day in what became Sanaman territory.
2. Be born to at least one parent with Sanaman citizenship.
3. Upon adoption by a person with Sanaman citizenship, if the adopted person is no more than 18 years old.
4. Be born to two parents who are legal residents in Sanama. Citizenship is only granted on application by the parents, and does not apply to children of diplomatic staff based in Sanama.
5. Be legally resident in Sanama or born in Sanama and the denial of Sanaman citizenship would render the person stateless.
6. Be a legal resident of Sanama and meet the following criteria:
   1. Have resided legally in Sanama for five years.
   2. Be fluent, both orally and in writing, in at least one national official language (Sanaman, Istvanistani, or Cisamarrese).
   3. Have committed no violent crime in Sanama for ten years prior to application.
   4. Have knowledge about Sanaman history, culture, society and law.
   5. Do not pose a threat to Sanaman internal or national security.

Loss of citizenship

A Sanaman citizen can lose their citizenship under a few specific circumstances:

1. By acquiring citizenship in another nation not exempted from the ban on dual citizenship.
2. By waging war against Sanama or in any other way giving aid or comfort to enemies of the state.
3. By application, unless the withdrawal of citizenship would render the person stateless.
