The Anglian Ducal Guard (Crandan: Atalgard fonn Anglien) is the ground component of the armed forces of the Free Duchy of Anglien. Established in XI.1754 AN by the Defense Establishment Ordinance of the Diet of Anglien, the Guard is a light infantry force of approximately 2,400 personnel organized into three infantry battalions, a support battalion, and a headquarters element at Johannsessbuurg. It holds the duchy's ground defense and internal security tasks and has conducted the campaign against the residual Nü Krantisk Rapskaff insurgency. Since the Constitution of Anglien came into force on 1.VIII.1759 AN, the Sovereign Duke's supreme command has been ceremonial and the employment of the force has belonged to the Government under law. Under the superseded Charter of Anglien the Duke had held supreme command. The Guard has been commanded since its formation by Colonel Rikard Stenhuis.
The force was raised from the resistance organizations that had operated against the Nü Krantisk Repüblik (NKR) during the occupation of the canton, and its officer and senior enlisted cadre remains drawn substantially from that period. The Ministry of Defense has attributed the distribution of battalion commands among former leaders of the Bergbuurg Underground, the Koa Kia'i, and the Ke Ala Moana to a concern that no single resistance formation should come to dominate the new military establishment. Training and initial equipping were conducted by the Training Directorate of the Concord Alliance Military Assistance Mission to Anglien (CAMA-A), which embedded training teams at battalion level and standardized the force to Concord Alliance interoperability norms. Officer commissioning and staff training are conducted at the Anglien Officer Training Institute.
Guard units took the leading Anglian role in the coalition response to the St. Aldric's Day Surge of 1756 AN, in which the force sustained its heaviest losses, and in the ten-week reduction of the NKR underground that followed. As the Concord Alliance Stabilization Force in Anglien (CASF-A) drew down against security benchmarks, the Guard assumed area responsibility across the mainland bailiwicks in sequence, and by early 1759 AN held that responsibility throughout the duchy.
Establishment
The Natopian intervention in Anglien expelled the forces of the Nü Krantisk Repüblik from the canton in IX.1754 AN and left a territory with no Anglian armed force of any kind. The pre-collapse Lac Glaceian cantonal administration had been dismantled, and security in the cleared districts rested entirely on Natopian Defense Force expeditionary units configured for combat rather than for policing or territorial defense.
The Diet of Anglien enacted the Defense Establishment Ordinance in XI.1754 AN as one of its twelve foundational statutes, constituting the Anglian Ducal Guard as the duchy's ground force and the Anglian Maritime Service as its maritime component. The Ordinance created the Ministry of Defense and vested operational command jointly in the Minister and the Sovereign Duke, the latter retaining supreme command under the Charter's transitional provisions. Colonel Rikard Stenhuis, a veteran of the Bergbuurg Underground, was appointed Commandant on the Ordinance's commencement.
Recruitment for the first three battalions drew on the resistance organizations that had operated during the occupation. The Bergbuurg Underground supplied the largest single cohort, and the Koa Kia'i and the Ke Ala Moana supplied Mala'anje volunteers who had fought alongside coalition forces during the clearing operations. The Ministry of Defense has described the resulting distribution of battalion commands among the three formations as the arrangement by which no single resistance movement came to dominate the armed forces. Kaimana Loloku, who had commanded Koa Kia'i operations during the occupation, was appointed the Guard's first First Sergeant-Major and remains its senior enlisted officer. The founding cadre held extensive combat and clandestine experience and almost no formal military education, a gap that shaped the training program CAMA-A designed for the force.
The Mala'anje-haven, the Mala'anje port-worker quarter of the Pakhuisstad in Johannsessbuurg, had been largely destroyed when the NKR turned on the community in III.1753 AN, and the men who came into the Guard from the Koa Kia'i and the Ke Ala Moana were in many cases returning to it.
Mandate and command
The Guard's statutory tasks under the Defense Establishment Ordinance are the territorial defense of the duchy, the maintenance of internal security in support of the civil power, and the conduct of operations against organized armed groups. External deterrence is not among them. That function belongs, until its withdrawal, to the Natopian garrison maintained under the Treaty of Johannsessbuurg, which serves exclusively as an external deterrent and holds no internal security role.
Supreme command rested with the Sovereign Duke under the Charter, with operational command vested jointly in the Duke and the Minister of Defense. Under the Constitution of Anglien, in force since 1.VIII.1759 AN, that supreme command is ceremonial, the administration and employment of the armed forces belong to the Government under law, and the force answers through the Minister to the Diet. The present Minister, Alice Steinbach, is a former officer of the Lac Glaceian cantonal guard, and her appointment brought pre-occupation institutional experience to the head of a ministry whose senior uniformed figures had come out of the resistance. The Commandant commands the force through the headquarters element at Johannsessbuurg.
CAMA-A personnel hold no command authority over Guard personnel and work on Anglian installations under Anglian force protection. Where Guard units have operated alongside the Western Corum counter-insurgency contingent or CASF-A, coordination has run through the Ministry of Defense's internal security liaison arrangements. The two chains of command remain separate.
Organization
The Guard fields three light infantry battalions, a support battalion, and a headquarters element. The 1st Light Infantry Battalion is garrisoned at Johannsessbuurg, where it occupies the former Lac Glaceian cantonal police barracks in the Buitenstad, whose outer districts saw the most extensive urban combat during the seventh and final phase of the intervention's assault on the city. The 2nd is at Bergbuurg, and the 3rd at Arminsburg, where it has been garrisoned since the city's incorporation from Lac Glacei in 1756 AN.
The support battalion provides transport, signals, engineering, and medical services. The Guard held none of these capabilities during its first two years, and they were supplied in the interim by CASF-A; the instruction that built them came from Vegno, whose CAMA-A contingent provides the mission's specialist training in signals, engineering, and medical services.
Each infantry battalion maintains an internal security company trained for operations in support of the Ducal Police Service, and each holds a quick reaction force at readiness. The internal security companies were raised in 1755 AN in response to the pattern of the residual insurgency, which conducted few engagements against military targets and many against civil ones.
The Guard provides armed reinforcement to the Special NKR Tribunals through the joint Special Operations Bureau, a standing Guard and Ducal Police Service body that holds the duchy's specialist intervention capability.
The force has no air arm, no armor, and no artillery beyond battalion mortars. Feasibility studies conducted within the Ministry of Defense with CAMA-A advisory support have examined the establishment of an air arm and of a unified special-operations command as post-transition undertakings, both conditioned on the duchy's fiscal position after the conclusion of CATO assistance. The Bliven Fund, a sovereign endowment put to the Concord Council in 1757 AN for capitalization by the alliance as the concluding act of its assistance program, was proposed to address that position. Nouvelle Alexandrie declined to subscribe in II.1759 AN, and the Ministry of Finance and Reconstruction said the endowment would be recalibrated to the capital actually pledged.
Training and equipment
The Training Directorate of CAMA-A, led by Natopia, conducted the Guard's initial training and continues to operate the embedded training teams that work at battalion level. Instruction has concentrated on small-unit tactics, communications, and logistics management. The directorate's standardization of Anglian tactics, equipment, and administrative procedure to Concord Alliance interoperability norms allows Guard units to operate alongside allied forces without significant friction, a capacity demonstrated during the coalition response to the St. Aldric's Day Surge.
The Anglien Officer Training Institute, established under CAMA-A's Institutional Development Directorate during the mission's first mandate, provides the Guard's officer commissioning course and a staff course for serving officers. The Institute was created to close the professional education gap in the founding cadre, and a majority of officers commissioned since 1756 AN have entered through it rather than by direct appointment from resistance service.
Equipment reaches the Guard principally through the transfer of surplus Natopian defense stores, administered by CAMA-A's Equipment Directorate. The Ministry of Defense has identified the resulting dependence on a single external supplier for ammunition, vehicles, and communications equipment as a question for the post-transition period.
Operations
The Guard has conducted no operations outside the territory of the duchy.
Counter-insurgency
The Guard's principal operational task since its formation has been the suppression of the residual Nü Krantisk Rapskaff insurgency in the duchy's rural districts and eastern bailiwicks. Operations have been conducted in coordination with the Western Corum counter-insurgency contingent, which brought to the theater the experience of Western Corum's own counter-insurgency campaigns, and with the Ducal Police Service, which holds the investigative and arrest functions.
In the first years CASF-A conducted the bulk of security operations directly and the Guard took a supporting part. From 1755 AN the relationship inverted progressively, with Anglian units taking the lead in populated areas while the stabilization force supplied the heavier capabilities the Guard lacked. The underground the Guard faced reached its greatest strength in 1756 AN, when it committed approximately 750 fighters in twenty-seven cells, three to four times its active strength at any earlier point in the transitional period. Its largest network operated in the Bahira and Shelsa interior with some 270 fighters, with smaller networks in the outer Purple Isles, the Eriksfjord forested belt, and Johannsessbuurg itself.
St. Aldric's Day Surge
The coordinated insurgent operation launched by the Sdaadsratt-im-Verborgen, the clandestine command of the defeated NKR, on 14.VII.1756 AN produced the Guard's heaviest engagement and its heaviest losses. At approximately 04:30, in darkness before the patronal feast itself, a Guard convoy traveling the Bahira to Shelsa road was ambushed by a cell of eighteen fighters using small arms and a single rocket-propelled grenade. Eleven Guard soldiers were killed and fourteen wounded. The cell extracted before the battalion's quick reaction force arrived. Nine of its eighteen members were killed two days later in a Western Corum pursuit.
On the feast day a four-man cell entered the Church of St. Aldric at Bergbuurg during the parish Mass, engaged Father Antoine Deschamps at the altar, and reached the sanctuary before being engaged by the Bergbuurg Police and a Guard quick reaction force pre-positioned in response to a heightened threat assessment. Father Antoine was struck once in the shoulder, survived, and continued the Mass in shortened form. The same intelligence picture, developed by the Joint Intelligence Center of CAMA-A under Oportian lead, had prompted the reinforcement of the Cathedral of St. Aldric at Johannsessbuurg eight days before the attack.
The coalition response, led by the Western Corum contingent and the Guard with support from the Ducal Police Service, the Natopian garrison, and Aerlan personnel embedded in CAMA-A, broke the operation within seventy-two hours. The Council of Ministers credited the training relationship with CAMA-A for the Guard's performance in the ten-week reduction of the underground's command structure that followed. Approximately 340 insurgents were killed and 290 captured during the operation, and 412 Surge-related indictments had been filed before the Special NKR Tribunals by the end of 1756 AN. Guard units took part in the combined assault with the Western Corum contingent on a farmstead north of Bahira on 4.IX.1756 AN in which Maich Grohndgraß, the underground's commander, was killed, the last action of the Surge and the end of the insurgency's existence as an organized force.
In the weeks that followed, joint Alexandrian Nazarene and Alpinist processions formed in every parish town of the duchy, with Sovereign Duke Edgard III attending at Johannsessbuurg, Bergbuurg, and Eesdehaven. Of the three, Bergbuurg was the one at which the Guard had fought.
Assumption of area responsibility
The drawdown of CASF-A was structured against security benchmarks rather than a fixed calendar, with each reduction tied to the Guard's assumption of a named area of responsibility. The stabilization force was approximately one-third reduced from its peak by 1757 AN. By early 1759 AN, with the Guard holding area responsibility and the stabilization force's drawdown substantially complete, the CATO presence in the duchy stood at approximately 3,000 personnel.
Election security planning for the constitutional referendum of 7.VII.1759 AN assigned polling-place protection to the Ducal Police Service, with the Guard's internal security companies in support, an allocation that reflected the changed security situation in the populated districts.
Insignia and traditions
The Guard's regimental colors, cap badges, and shoulder titles carry the plain bendwise winged fish of the Anglian arms, borne without the annulet that differences the Sovereign Duke's personal arms. A ducal warrant authorizes the Crown of Anglien on the regimental colors, and it is the Crown that marks them off from civilian uses of the same device. The motto of the Anglian arms, Wii Bliven, Wii Stans, "We Remain, We Stand", is borne with it. Battalion colors add local devices in marshaled compositions, a practice carried over from the civic heraldry of the towns in which the battalions were raised.
The Guard carries no chaplain on its establishment, and observance is arranged locally instead. For the Alpinist majority of the ranks it runs through the priests of whichever of the 34 protected temple sites on the Ministry of Territorial Affairs registry lies nearest a battalion's garrison, the Alpine Temple neither recruiting nor seeking appointments away from its own sites. For the Alexandrian Nazarene minority it runs through the parish clergy of the Diocese of Anglien in the garrison towns. A reading from the Book of Observations is made at each battalion on the regimental day.
Commemorative practice draws almost entirely on the occupation period, the duchy having had no army before 1754 AN. The Guard observes the anniversary of the fall of Bergbuurg in IV.1754 AN as its principal regimental day. The Bergbuurg Strike and the operations of the Koa Kia'i and the Ke Ala Moana are recorded on the colors as founding actions of the formations from which the Guard was raised, none of them having been fought by the Guard itself.
Capability and transition benchmarks
The Concord Council's reviews of the CAMA-A mandate have recorded steady improvement in the Guard's readiness, logistics capacity, and officer professionalism against the benchmarks set for the mission. The Ministry of External Affairs holds that neutrality is a status that must be defended to be credible, and that neither the Guard nor the Anglian Maritime Service is yet capable of defending it. The Guard's capability has accordingly been one of the stated reasons for the duchy's adoption of active non-alignment in preference to a declaration of neutrality. Non-alignment has since been made permanent by the Constitution of Anglien, which bars the permanent stationing of foreign forces except under a treaty of defined duration. The Constitution's Schedule of Transition continues the Treaty of Johannsessbuurg in force, and its garrison, which began drawing down on the certification of the 1759 AN referendum, is to be withdrawn within six months of the duchy's first election.
Service before 1753 AN in the Lac Glaceian cantonal guard and the cantonal maritime police is not reckoned for Anglian pension purposes. The Lac Glacei Act carried the obligations of Lac Glacei to the Order of the Holy Lakes only for those territories under effective Glaceian control when it took effect, which left the liabilities owed in Anglien unallocated, and no successor arrangement has been concluded since. The officers affected are concentrated at the top of both services: the Minister of Defense and the Director of the Maritime Service came from those bodies. The Ministry of Finance and Reconstruction has costed a settlement against future transfers from the Bliven Fund rather than against the current allocation.
