Anglien (Frii Ataltom Anglien; Anglo-Saksen: Anglia; Arminian: Anglye) is a small sovereign state on the western coast of northern Apollonia, bordering the Clear Sea to the west and the Straits of Artsessdun to the northwest. The territory of Anglien encompasses the mainland canton of the former Grand Duchy of Lac Glacei together with the Purple Isles and the eastern island chain extending toward Eesdehaven on the northeastern coast. Its capital and principal port is Johannsessbuurg. The pre-occupation population was recorded at 606,938 in the 1752 AN Lac Glaceian census, though two years of occupation, mass displacement, and the forced expulsion of the Mala'anje and Alexandrian Nazarene communities have substantially reduced the effective resident population as of independence.

Anglien's history as a distinct political entity stretches to antiquity. The Anglish tribes, a fishing people of the northeastern Lyrica coastline, migrated to mainland Apollonia around 1493 AN and eventually merged into the broader Crandish confederation that became the Empire of Arminy. The duchy passed under Alexandrian sovereignty in 1510 AN when the dissolution of Cranda transferred it to the Emperor of the Alexandrians, and the Alexandrian ducal title persisted across multiple periods of political change, surviving the Alexandrian flu pandemic of 1651 AN, incorporation into the Anglo-Saksen Commonwealth in 1707 AN, and absorption into the Grand Duchy of Lac Glacei in 1713 AN. Throughout this history, the hereditary claim of the House of Carrillo to the Duchy of Anglien was never formally extinguished, a legal continuity that would prove decisive in 1754 AN.

The NKR insurrection that began in 1752 AN brought the Nü Krantisk Rapskaff to power across Anglien and several neighboring cantons of Lac Glacei. During two years of occupation, NKR cantonal authorities expelled the Mala'anje fishing community from Kloss, shuttered and burned Alexandrian Nazarene churches, and conducted extrajudicial executions against the civilian population. The Bergbuurg Strike of 2.XII.1753 AN and the subsequent Miracle of Bergbuurg drew international attention to the persecution, prompting a formal appeal from Archbishop Boniface VIII, Primate of the Autocephalous Nazarene Church of Alexandria, and a parallel statement by Edgard III, the hereditary Duke of Anglien and father of Empress Clara I of Natopia. The Natopian intervention in Anglien, launched in XIII.1753 AN and coordinated with Meckelnburgh forces operating from the northwest and Aerlan peacekeepers already in theatre, expelled NKR forces from the canton by IX.1754 AN.

Anglien was established as an independent state following the Lac Glaceian government's formal acknowledgment of sovereignty lapse over the western cantons and its recognition of Edgard III as sovereign duke. The Charter of Anglien, promulgated in X.1754 AN, established a transitional constitutional framework with the Sovereign Duke holding broad executive powers and the Diet of Anglien simultaneously serving as the duchy's ordinary legislature and constitutional convention, with a permanent constitution due for national referendum in 1759 AN. The duchy operates under the protection of the Concord Alliance (CATO), whose member states fund and administer the Concord Alliance Military Assistance Mission to Anglien (CAMA-A) and provide the majority of transitional budget revenue through grant transfers.

Etymology

The name Anglien derives from the Anglish tribes, the ancient fishing people from whom the duchy traces its earliest political identity. The Anglish acquired their name from their practice of catching and trading angelfish along the northeastern shores of Lyrica, a trade so central to their economy and identity that neighboring peoples, including the early Hurmudans and the Baltish tribes to the west, came to call them the Anglies. The angelfish has been the symbol of the Anglies. In popular and vernacular use, the angelfish appears as a recognizable silhouette of the species (Pterophyllum, in Micras taxonomy). In formal heraldic blazon, the charge is rendered as a winged fish argent on a field azure, the wings emblematic of the "angel" element of the name, the fish-body emblematic of the species and the maritime founding.

In modern Crandish, the territory is rendered as Anglien, the form used in all official ducal documentation. The Anglo-Saksen form, Anglia, reflects the later settlement of Anglo-Saksen communities in the region following the duchy's incorporation into the Anglo-Saksen Commonwealth in 1707 AN, and remains in common use among older Anglo-Saksen-identifying residents. The Arminian form, Anglye, survives in historical documents and in the liturgical usage of the Autocephalous Nazarene Church of Alexandria, whose ecclesiastical records for the diocese were maintained in classical Arminian through the imperial period.

The duchy's full Crandish name, Frii Ataltom Anglien, translates as Free Duchy of Anglien. Frii is the Crandish adjective for free or independent, carrying in this context the specific political meaning of unencumbered sovereignty rather than the broader sense of personal liberty. Ataltom is a compound of Atal, the Crandish word for duke or lord, and tom, meaning domain or land, a construction attested in Crandish administrative usage from at least the early Arminian period. The title Atal fonn Anglien (Duke of Anglien), granted to the Emperor of the Alexandrians in 1510 AN, uses the same root, with fonn serving as the Crandish genitive preposition equivalent to "of."

History

Main article: History of Anglien

The earliest polity known to call itself the Anglish tribes first appeared on the northeastern shores of Lyrica, just southeast of Hurmu. These early people were mostly fishermen with coastal settlements that banded together for common defense. They acquired the name of Anglies from their habit to catch and sell angelfish to the other early tribes of Lyrica, including a very early Hurmu. The angelfish eventually became the heraldic symbol of Anglien. They kept the peace with Hurmu but warred frequently with the neighboring Baltish tribes in the west. Around 1493 AN they were pushed out by the Juttish tribes and migrated north onto mainland Apollonia, eventually displacing the Purple Islanders along the Clear Sea. The Dukes of Anglien eventually joined with other nearby tribes and formed Cranda, which later would expand into behemoth of Arminy.

  • 1510: Ceded to Alexandria upon the dissolution of Cranda.
  • 1514: Alexandria lost sovereignty over the Duchy due to the Atkins Reduction of sovereignty across the planet
  • Novatainia and Tokidoki (Toketi) begin taking over the area
  • 1627: Gralus (the union of Novatainia and Toketi) folded. Anglien brought into the Green.
  • 1628: Brought under the sovereignty of Alexandria in accordance with the Treaty of the Clear Sea.
  • 1651–1652: Ravaged by the Alexandrian Flu, killing 70–90% of its population. Dissolution of the Alexandrian empire. Since then, the duchy became part of the Green.

In 1707, Anglien came under the newly established Anglo-Saksen Commonwealth, a polity that existed until 1713 when it merged into the Grand Duchy of Lac Glacei.

In 1753, the United Kingdom of Meckelnburgh invaded as part of the Meckelno–Nü Krantisk War, and ceded the territory to the duchy in 1754.

In 1754, the Grand Duke of Lac Glacei recognized Edgard III as Duke of Anglien and sovereign of the territory.

Geography

Anglien is bounded in the east by the Jutien, and on the southeast by Eesdeheito, a territory of the Hurmu realm of Lac Glacei. Anglien is bounded to the west by the Clear Sea, and to the northwest by the Straits of Artsessdun.

Anglien borders the Meckelnburgh territory of Iselande to the north.

Anglien's major settlements are Bergbuurg, Bahira, Johannsessbuurg and Shelsa.

Politics and government

The Free Duchy of Anglien operates under a transitional constitutional framework established by the Charter of Anglien (Stadsfortte fonn Anglien), promulgated by Edgard III in X.1754 AN following the convening of the Diet of Anglien and the formal recognition of sovereignty by Monte Glacei. The Charter vests executive authority in the Sovereign Duke during the transitional period, granting him powers substantially broader than those typical of constitutional monarchies in the region. This arrangement was designed with the explicit consent of the Diet and the endorsement of the Concord Alliance (CATO), reflecting the practical reality that Anglien emerged from the NKR insurrection without the administrative infrastructure required to sustain parliamentary government in the immediate term. The transitional framework carries a sunset provision: the Constitutional Diet must complete its drafting work and submit a permanent constitution to a national referendum no later than five years after the Charter's promulgation.

Executive oversight by the CATO member states is exercised through the CATO Commissioner of Peace for Anglien, an office established by the Concord Council in the same month as the Charter. The Commissioner, appointed by the CATO council for a renewable two-year term, serves as the alliance's senior representative in the duchy and as the primary coordinator of all CATO assistance programs, including the Concord Alliance Military Assistance Mission to Anglien (CAMA-A), humanitarian reconstruction support, and institutional development. The Commissioner holds no formal authority over the Anglian government but commands considerable practical influence through control of alliance funding and enjoys a standing right of audience with the Sovereign Duke. The office maintains an official residence in Johannsessbuurg and a permanent representative to the Diet of Anglien, who may attend sessions and address the chamber on matters concerning CATO's assistance mandate.

The administration of justice is handled by a three-tier transitional court system established under the Charter, which also created the Truth and Reconciliation Commission of Anglien (TRCA) as an independent body with both investigative and prosecutorial powers. The TRCA is the most consequential institutional innovation of the transitional period, empowered not only to document NKR atrocities and hear testimony but to refer perpetrators to the Special NKR Tribunals of Anglien for criminal prosecution, issue binding property restitution orders, and permanently bar individuals from public office. The existence of a body with real enforcement authority, rather than the purely advisory commissions that characterized transitional justice in other post-conflict contexts, reflects the position of the Diet and the CATO Commissioner that accountability was the precondition for durable civil peace, not simply acknowledgment.

Political life in the duchy remains nascent. Formal political parties did not exist under NKR rule, and the community structures that survived the occupation organized themselves around kinship, religion, and the resistance networks rather than ideological programs. The Diet's current membership comprises representatives of bailiwick communities, appointed minority delegates, and resistance veterans. The first competitive elections under the permanent constitution are anticipated to follow the 1759 AN referendum, with the constitutional convention's proceedings expected to produce a permanent electoral system alongside the substantive constitutional text.

Sovereign Duke of Anglien

The Sovereign Duke of Anglien, Edgard III.

Under the Charter of Anglien, the Sovereign Duke holds executive authority of unusual breadth for the duration of the transitional period. The Charter explicitly grants the Duke power to issue ducal decrees with the force of law, appoint and dismiss all ministers and senior officials of the ducal administration, convene and prorogue the Diet of Anglien, command the Armed Forces of the Free Duchy of Anglien as supreme commander, conduct foreign relations and ratify treaties, and exercise emergency powers suspending normal legal process in the event of a declared security emergency. Ducal decrees take effect immediately upon promulgation in the Gazette of the Sovereign Duchy of Anglien and remain in force unless annulled by a two-thirds supermajority of the full Diet within sixty days. In practice, the Diet has exercised this power sparingly, reflecting both the Duke's personal authority and the absence of organized factional opposition in the chamber's first session.

Edgard III, born Edward Carrillo Rothborne in 1664 AN, is the first sovereign duke in over a century to exercise actual governance in Anglien. Now in his tenth decade, he has delegated day-to-day administrative functions to the Council of Ministers of Anglien under Transitional Prime Minister Eduard Vogt, while retaining direct personal control over foreign affairs, appointments to the transitional judiciary, and the composition of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission of Anglien. His personal authority with the duchy's Alexandrian Nazarene community and among many Crandish residents, grounded in his identity as scion of the House of Carrillo and father of Empress Clara I of Natopia, has been an asset in building legitimacy among a population whose confidence in formal institutions was shattered by the NKR insurrection.

Council of Ministers

The Duke's powers are not without constraint. The Charter binds him to consult the Council of Ministers of Anglien before issuing decrees on matters of taxation, military deployment, or treaty ratification. The Council may not veto ducal decisions, but its formal objection, recorded in the Council minutes, triggers a mandatory thirty-day review period during which the Diet may convene emergency sessions. The CATO Commissioner of Peace exercises further informal restraint through the alliance's funding conditionalities, tied to benchmarks including rule of law standards and political pluralism that the Sovereign Duke has formally accepted as conditions of CATO support.

The Council comprises five ministries and is chaired by Transitional Prime Minister Eduard Vogt, a former Lac Glaceian civil administrator who refused cooperation with the NKR authorities and spent much of the occupation in hiding in the eastern districts. His appointment was broadly welcomed by the duchy's surviving administrative community as a signal of institutional continuity with the pre-NKR order.

Former Dukes

The title Duke of Anglien (Atal fonn Anglien in modern Crandish, or Atal fonn Anglieno in classical Crandish) was in 1510 AN granted to the Emperor of the Alexandrians and remained thus until 1652 AN. Since then, the title has been succeeded under the principles of Salic law.

Diet of Anglien

Main article: Diet of Anglien

The Diet of Anglien is the founding deliberative body of the Free Duchy, convened by Edgard III in Johannsessbuurg in X.1754 AN. It serves a dual mandate unusual among legislative assemblies; it functions simultaneously as the duchy's ordinary legislature during the transitional period and as its constitutional convention, charged with drafting the permanent constitution that will govern Anglien after the transition concludes. The Charter of Anglien designates the current body as the Constitutional Diet, distinguishing it from the permanent legislature the constitution will establish. The two roles carry different procedural requirements. Ordinary legislation requires a simple majority; constitutional articles require approval by three-fifths of the full membership before incorporation into the draft text.

The Constitutional Diet comprises 44 members drawn from two categories. Thirty-six representatives were selected by bailiwick community assemblies convened under CATO supervision in IX.1754 AN, one month before the Diet's formal opening. These assemblies, the first organized public deliberation in most communities since the NKR occupation, varied considerably in their procedural formality, but all produced delegations broadly representative of the surviving population. Eight delegates were appointed directly by the Sovereign Duke to ensure representation for communities whose populations were too dispersed or traumatized to participate effectively in the assembly process, including the duchy's Alexandrian Nazarene congregations, the Mala'anje diaspora community that has partially resettled in Anglien following the restoration of security, and the remnant Norse-Crandish communities of the interior bailiwicks.

Bailiwick / Community Seats Selection method
Johannsessbuurg and surrounding area 10 Bailiwick community assembly
Bergbuurg and eastern districts 8 Bailiwick community assembly
Purple Isles and northeastern coast 6 Bailiwick community assembly
Interior bailiwicks (Bahira, Shelsa, others) 12 Bailiwick community assembly
Alexandrian Nazarene community 3 Ducal appointment
Mala'anje diaspora community 3 Ducal appointment
Norse-Crandish interior remnants 2 Ducal appointment
Total 44

The Constitutional Diet's first session, opened by Edgard III in person in XI.1754 AN, adopted twelve foundational statutes within its first three months covering taxation, land registration, civil registration of births and deaths, licensing of commercial activity, establishment of a ducal police service, and the procedural rules of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission of Anglien. These statutes carry the force of ordinary law during the transitional period but are explicitly provisional: the constitutional draft may supersede, amend, or entrench any of them upon ratification.

The constitutional drafting process operates on a five-year schedule running to 1759 AN, by which date the full draft must be submitted to a national referendum for ratification by the adult population of the duchy. The Charter of Anglien requires the referendum to pass by an absolute majority of valid votes cast, with a minimum turnout threshold of fifty percent of registered voters. If the threshold is not met, the draft returns to the Constitutional Diet for revision and a second referendum must be held within eighteen months. The CATO Commissioner of Peace is empowered to certify the referendum's conduct and results.

The Constitutional Diet has organized itself into four permanent drafting committees.

Committee Mandate Chair
Committee on Fundamental Rights Civil and political rights; minority protections; language rights; freedom of religion Deputy Speaker Marta Svensdottir
Committee on Institutions Structure of permanent legislature; executive powers; ducal prerogatives after transition; judicial independence Speaker John Gautier
Committee on Succession and the Ducal House Rules of succession; obligations of the ducal house; relationship between the ducal house and the permanent constitution Prince Edgard Nathan (ex officio; non-voting)
Committee on CATO Relations and External Affairs Foreign relations framework; treaty-making powers; Concord Alliance obligations; terms of the CATO protection arrangement Henrikke Baumgartner

The Committee on Succession and the Ducal House carries particular political weight given Anglien's constitutional novelty. The succession provisions being drafted must reconcile the Salic law tradition under which Edgard III inherited the ducal title with the expectations of a modern constitutional state. Early deliberations produced broad agreement on maintaining male-preference succession for the immediate generation, consistent with the terms under which Prince Edgard Nathan was recognized as heir apparent by the Diet in XI.1754 AN, while leaving open whether absolute primogeniture should apply to subsequent generations. The question has not generated significant public controversy, though it remains formally unresolved pending the committee's final recommendations.

Transitional courts

The Charter of Anglien established a three-tier transitional court system to provide judicial services in a territory where the pre-collapse Lac Glaceian court infrastructure had been entirely destroyed and the NKR's summary tribunals had no legitimate successors.

Court Tier Jurisdiction Composition
Supreme Transitional Court of Anglien Highest Constitutional questions; appeals from lower courts and Special Tribunals; disputes between ducal administration and Diet Five justices appointed by the Sovereign Duke with Diet confirmation; minimum two CATO-nominated international jurists during the transitional period
Ducal Circuit Courts Second Civil disputes; serious criminal matters; appeals from bailiwick courts Three-judge panels; judges appointed by the Sovereign Duke on recommendation of the Ministry of Justice
Bailiwick Courts Third Minor civil and criminal matters; land and property disputes; local administrative appeals Single judges vetted by the Ministry of Justice and CAMA-A rule-of-law advisors
Special NKR Tribunals of Anglien Specialized War crimes; crimes against humanity; unlawful execution; enforced disappearance; destruction of religious property committed under NKR authority Three-judge panels of two Anglian judges and one CATO-nominated international jurist; operate under referral from the TRCA

The involvement of CATO-nominated international jurists in both the Supreme Transitional Court and the Special NKR Tribunals was a condition insisted upon by the CATO Commissioner of Peace during Charter negotiations. The Sovereign Duke accepted the condition on the grounds that no qualified pool of Anglian jurists existed capable of staffing the courts independently, and that international participation would provide a check against bias toward collaborators and politically motivated prosecutions alike. CAMA-A's rule-of-law advisory contingent, drawn from legal professionals across the Concord Alliance's member states, provides ongoing training and institutional support to bailiwick court judges, most of whom had no formal legal training prior to their appointment.

Truth and Reconciliation Commission of Anglien

The Truth and Reconciliation Commission of Anglien (TRCA) is an independent body established by the Charter of Anglien with investigative, quasi-prosecutorial, and restorative powers over offenses committed under NKR authority during the occupation of 1752 AN--1754 AN. The Charter grants it coercive powers that distinguish it from advisory commissions in other post-conflict settings. The TRCA operates through three chambers, each with defined jurisdictional scope.

Chamber Jurisdiction Primary powers
Chamber of Crimes Against Persons Unlawful killings; enforced disappearances; torture; ethnic expulsion of Mala'anje and Alexandrian Nazarene communities Compulsory appearance orders; referral to Special NKR Tribunals for criminal prosecution; authority to declare named individuals responsible for specific deaths or disappearances in the public record
Chamber of Property and Institutional Crimes Unlawful seizure and destruction of property; confiscation of boats and business assets; destruction of religious sites Binding property restitution orders enforceable by ducal courts; voiding of all property transfers made under NKR authority; compensation orders against estates of deceased perpetrators
Chamber of Collaboration and Public Life Participation in NKR administration; collaboration by cantonal officials, judges, and police; facilitation of persecution Permanent or time-limited bars from public office, civil service, and licensed professions; referral to Special NKR Tribunals where collaboration rose to criminal complicity

The TRCA may issue compulsory appearance orders requiring any person within the duchy's jurisdiction to appear and testify. Refusal is punishable by detention of up to thirty days per instance. Testimony given before the Commission is not admissible against the witness in the Special NKR Tribunals if the witness has applied for and been granted conditional amnesty, but the Commission may decline to grant amnesty where it finds the applicant has not provided full and truthful disclosure. Amnesty applications require the applicant to appear publicly, acknowledge their actions in full, and submit to questioning by representatives of affected communities. The public character of this process was insisted upon by the Mala'anje community's Diet delegates, who argued that private truth-telling without public acknowledgment served perpetrators more than victims.

The Commission is chaired by a panel of five commissioners appointed jointly by the Sovereign Duke and the CATO Commissioner of Peace, and includes at least one representative of the Alexandrian Nazarene community and one Mala'anje representative. The CATO Commissioner holds ex officio observer status at all TRCA proceedings and may raise concerns with the CATO council if the Commission's operations appear compromised by political interference. As of 1755 AN, the TRCA had processed 847 testimony applications, issued 214 compulsory appearance orders, referred 38 cases to the Special NKR Tribunals, and issued binding restitution orders covering 1,203 properties seized or destroyed during the occupation.

Local and city government

Local governance is organized around the historic bailiwick structure inherited from the Grand Duchy of Lac Glacei and the earlier Anglo-Saksen Commonwealth. Each bailiwick is administered during the transitional period by an appointed Bailiwick Council, whose members are nominated by the Council of Ministers of Anglien on the recommendation of the bailiwick's Diet delegates. The Charter of Anglien designates this arrangement as explicitly provisional: the constitutional convention is expected to establish elected bailiwick councils as part of the permanent governmental framework, with direct elections anticipated to follow the 1759 AN referendum.

The capital, Johannsessbuurg, operates under a separate municipal administration reflecting its status as the seat of the Sovereign Duke, the Diet, and the duchy's principal port. The city is governed by an appointed Municipal Council, chaired by a Burgemeester (Burgemeester fonn Johannsessbuurg) nominated by Edgard III and confirmed by the Diet. The Charter established the Council with twelve members at the Charter promulgation in X.1754 AN; ducal decree expanded the Council to thirty members in I.1755 AN to accommodate communal representation for the Crandish, Anglo-Saksen, Crandish-Alexandrian, Alexandrian Nazarene, and Mala'anje communities and to provide adequate technical capacity for the city's reconstruction agenda. Bergbuurg, as the site of the Miracle of Bergbuurg, holds a special status under the Charter as a designated heritage city, with its reconstruction overseen jointly by the ducal administration and the Alexandrian Nazarene Church through a joint heritage committee established in XII.1754 AN.

The Purple Isles and the island of Rielrar present distinct administrative challenges given their geographic dispersal and the isolated communities that survived the NKR period with little contact with the mainland. A separate Islands Administration was established under the Ministry of Territorial Affairs in I.1755 AN, headed by an Islands Commissioner with broad delegated authority over the island communities pending the establishment of permanent elected structures. CATO's maritime advisory contingent within CAMA-A provides practical administrative support to the Islands Commissioner's office.

Finances and taxation

The duchy's public finances during the transitional period are organized under the Anglien Emergency Budget Ordinance of XI.1754 AN, the first substantive piece of legislation passed by the Diet after the foundational statutes. Revenue is drawn from four principal sources: customs and port duties levied at Johannsessbuurg and Eesdehaven, a flat-rate land tax on all registered properties, licensing fees for commercial and fishing activities, and CATO grant transfers administered through the CATO Commissioner of Peace for Anglien. The grant transfers represent the largest single revenue item in the transitional budget, covering approximately 58% of total expenditure in the first fiscal year. Both the Sovereign Duke and the CATO Commissioner acknowledge this dependence as a structural vulnerability that the constitutional period must address.

The Anglian mark (AM), established by ducal decree in XI.1754 AN, is the duchy's currency. Its name was chosen by the Diet's first monetary committee for its resonance with the region's Crandish monetary heritage and, as noted in the committee's formal report, for its connection to Alexandria and the Markion River as the site of the founding revelation of the Alexandrian Nazarene faith. The mark is currently pegged to the Natopian natopo at a fixed exchange rate, a stabilization measure recommended by CAMA-A's economic advisory contingent to prevent inflationary pressure during the reconstruction period. The Court of Commerce and Guilds of Natopia provides technical assistance to the duchy's monetary administration under a separate bilateral arrangement outside the CATO framework.

Foreign relations

Anglien's foreign relations are conducted by the Sovereign Duke through the Ministry of External Affairs, established under the Charter as one of the five ministries of the Council of Ministers of Anglien. The duchy's treaty-making capacity is constrained during the transitional period: treaties of alliance, territorial significance, or lasting financial obligation require Diet ratification by a simple majority, and the CATO Commissioner of Peace holds a formal consultative role in any negotiation touching on Anglien's obligations under the Concord Alliance framework.

The duchy's most significant bilateral relationship is with Natopia, which maintains a residual garrison in Johannsessbuurg, administers CAMA-A, and holds formal treaty responsibility for Anglien's external defense. The protection treaty signed alongside the Charter commits Natopia to treating any armed attack on Anglien as an attack on Natopian sovereign interests. The relationship carries an inherent asymmetry that Anglian officials acknowledge openly, characterizing it as a necessary condition of independence rather than a limitation on it. Relations with Nouvelle Alexandrie and Aerla, the other principal CATO contributors to the intervention and reconstruction, are managed through the CATO Commissioner's coordinating office rather than through separate bilateral channels.

The duchy maintained a formally correct but cautious relationship with the remnant Monte Glacei government until its incorporation into the Order of the Holy Lakes. The Monte Glacei government recognized Edgard III's sovereignty in VIII.1754 AN as part of the d'Anscar government's broader acknowledgment of sovereignty lapse over the western cantons. Thereafter, upon taking over rump Lac Glacei, the Order immediately opened up diplomatic relations with Anglien. The two countries set up embassies in their respective capitals. Relations with Meckelnburgh are cordial: Meckelnburgh forces and Natopian forces operated in complementary sectors during the Natopian intervention in Anglien, and the post-independence relationship has remained constructive, with Meckelnburgh having recognized Anglien's sovereignty promptly and without reservation.

Formal relations with the Imperial State of Constancia established by authority of an Autokratorial Decree bearing date 2.IX.1754. An Imperial Constancian Ambassador, Gemistos Bessarion, was sent on 5.IX.1754.

Military

The Armed Forces of the Free Duchy of Anglien were established by act of the Diet of Anglien in 1754 AN, following the formal recognition of sovereignty and the gradual drawdown of the Natopian Defense Force garrison that had secured the canton during and after the Natopian intervention in Anglien. The duchy's military posture reflects its position as a small, newly independent state operating under the protection of the Concord Alliance (CATO). Anglien neither seeks nor could afford a force capable of independent territorial defense against a major adversary. Its armed forces are sized for internal security, border patrol, coastal protection, and a credible contribution to allied operations rather than stand-alone warfighting.

The Concord Alliance Military Assistance Mission to Anglien (CAMA-A), established by CATO agreement in 1754 AN, is the primary vehicle for professionalizing and equipping the duchy's new armed forces. Funded collectively by CATO member states and administered through a joint command headquartered in Johannsessbuurg, the mission provides training, doctrine, equipment, and institutional development across all branches of the Anglian military. Personnel and materiel are contributed by all Concord Alliance member states in asymmetric roles reflecting each nation's capabilities, with Natopia providing the largest contingent by virtue of its existing garrison presence. CAMA-A operates on a rolling three-year mandate subject to renewal by the CATO council, with benchmarks tied to measurable improvements in Anglian force readiness, logistics capacity, and officer professionalism.

The ground component, styled the Anglian Ducal Guard, numbers approximately 2,400 personnel organized into three light infantry battalions, a support battalion, and a headquarters element. CAMA-A trainers embedded at battalion level have standardized the Guard's tactics, equipment, and administrative procedures to CATO interoperability norms, allowing Anglian units to operate alongside allied forces without significant friction. The Guard's officer and senior NCO cadre draws substantially on veterans of the three principal resistance organizations that operated against the NKR during the occupation. The Ke Ala Moana, the Mala'anje maritime escape network that evacuated over 1,500 civilians under NKR interdiction, contributed personnel with proven skills in small-unit movement, coastal navigation, and clandestine logistics. The Koa Kia'i, the Mala'anje territorial defense force that conducted armed escort and intelligence operations throughout the occupation, provided the Guard's most experienced combat veterans, including its first sergeant-major, Kaimana Loloku, whose brother David served as Prime Minister of the Mala First Nation. The third organization, the Bergbuurg Underground, was a predominantly Crandish and Anglo-Saksen civilian network organized around Father Antoine Deschamps's parish that sheltered persecuted Alexandrian Nazarene congregants, gathered intelligence on NKR troop dispositions, and maintained courier links between isolated communities throughout eastern Anglien. The Underground contributed fewer fighters than the Mala'anje organizations but provided the Guard with an irreplaceable network of local knowledge and the moral authority of having resisted from within the community rather than from exile.

Coastal defense and maritime patrol are handled by the Anglian Maritime Service, a force of approximately 1,400 personnel whose scale reflects Anglien's geography as much as its population. The duchy's coastline, extended substantially by the eastern island chain and the Purple Isles, presents a patrol burden disproportionate to the territory's land area. The Maritime Service operates 18 vessels of varying size, comprising four offshore patrol vessels capable of extended operations in the Clear Sea and Straits of Artsessdun, eight inshore patrol craft assigned to specific island groups and coastal sectors, four dedicated search and rescue vessels, and two logistics and support craft. CATO equipment grants, administered primarily through Aerla's maritime advisory contingent within CAMA-A, funded the majority of this fleet. Aerlan maritime advisors have taken the lead on Maritime Service development, drawing on Aerla's own experience with island patrol operations in similar conditions. The service maintains its main base at Johannsessbuurg and a forward station at Eesdehaven covering the northeastern approaches and the outer Purple Isles. Its primary responsibilities are enforcement of the duchy's territorial waters, anti-smuggling interdiction along the eastern chain, fisheries protection, and search and rescue. Formal naval defense against any serious maritime threat remains a Natopian responsibility.

Economy

Main article: Economy of Anglien

Anglien's economy is in the earliest stages of reconstruction following the destruction of the NKR insurrection. With a population of approximately 606,938 as of the 1752 AN census, and a substantially reduced effective labor force after two years of occupation, mass displacement, and the expulsion of Mala'anje and Alexandrian Nazarene communities, the duchy's productive capacity in 1755 AN bears little resemblance to its pre-occupation baseline. CATO grant transfers administered through the CATO Commissioner of Peace for Anglien cover approximately 58% of total government expenditure in the first fiscal year, making external support the single largest driver of economic activity in the transitional period. The Ministry of Finance and Reconstruction has identified the restoration of the duchy's traditional economic base, fishing, maritime trade, and agriculture, as the primary medium-term objectives.

Currency

Main article: Anglian mark

The Anglian mark (symbol: AM; code: ANG) was established as the official currency of the Free Duchy by ducal decree in XI.1754 AN, replacing the Lac Glaceian currency that had circulated in the canton under the Grand Duchy and the informal barter systems that had largely supplanted it during the NKR occupation. The name was chosen by the Diet of Anglien's first monetary committee for two reasons: its resonance with the monetary tradition of the Crandish and Anglo-Saksen communities that make up the majority of Anglien's population, and its connection to the Markion River, the site of St. Natsanet's founding revelation and a name of deep significance to the duchy's Alexandrian Nazarene minority. The committee's formal report noted that a currency named for the Mark both honored the land and its people.

The mark is currently pegged to the Natopian natopo at a fixed exchange rate, a stabilization measure recommended by CAMA-A's economic advisory contingent to prevent the inflationary pressure that typically afflicts post-conflict economies where monetary institutions are absent and black market exchange has been the norm. The Court of Commerce and Guilds of Natopia provides technical assistance to the duchy's monetary administration, including banknote printing, reserve management, and the training of the small professional staff of the new Anglian Monetary Office established under the Ministry of Finance and Reconstruction. Mark banknotes are printed in Lindstrom under contract and transported to Anglien under Natopian Defense Force escort; the duchy does not yet possess domestic printing capacity.

The peg to the natopo is expected to remain in place through at least 1759 AN, when the constitutional referendum will produce a permanent government with the institutional standing to negotiate longer-term monetary arrangements. Several CAMA-A economic advisors have noted privately that Anglien's size and economic profile may make a permanent currency peg or even formal monetary union with Natopia more practical than independent monetary policy, though the question is politically sensitive given the duchy's recent assertion of sovereignty. The Diet has not formally addressed the post-transition monetary question, deferring it to the Committee on Institutions as part of the broader constitutional drafting process.

Infrastructure

Anglien's infrastructure reflects both its pre-occupation character as a coastal trading canton and the urgent reconstruction priorities of the transitional period. The Natopian intervention in Anglien left key road and port facilities damaged or degraded after years of NKR neglect, and CATO reconstruction grants have prioritized restoring the transport and logistics networks on which the duchy's economic recovery depends. The Ministry of Territorial Affairs maintains an ongoing infrastructure inventory updated quarterly, the first systematic assessment of the duchy's physical assets since the 1752 AN Lac Glaceian cantonal survey.

Trade and reconstruction

Johannsessbuurg remains the duchy's economic center, handling all significant import and export activity through its partially rehabilitated port. Emergency repairs completed in late 1754 AN restored two berths to operational status, sufficient to receive medium-sized cargo vessels carrying reconstruction materials and basic commodities. Full restoration of the port's pre-occupation capacity, including cargo handling equipment and the deepwater berths capable of accommodating heavy freight vessels, is estimated to require three to five years of sustained investment. Eesdehaven on the northeastern coast handles lighter traffic serving the Purple Isles and the eastern island communities.

Dingo Enterprises and Neridia Defense Industries, both Natopian firms with established reconstruction expertise, hold the duchy's largest active contracts, covering port infrastructure, road rehabilitation, and emergency utility restoration. New Alexandrian and Aerlan firms have taken smaller contracts in the fisheries and maritime services sectors. The Ministry of Finance and Reconstruction has issued a formal call for expressions of interest from investors in the fishing fleet, timber licensing, and the planned redevelopment of the Johannsessbuurg commercial district, with favorable terms offered to companies willing to commit to a minimum five-year operating presence in the duchy.

The Anglian mark is currently pegged to the Natopian natopo at a fixed rate of exchange, providing monetary stability during the reconstruction period at the cost of independent monetary policy. The Court of Commerce and Guilds of Natopia provides technical assistance to the duchy's monetary administration. The peg is expected to be maintained through at least 1759 AN, when the constitutional referendum will produce a permanent government with the standing to negotiate longer-term monetary arrangements. Bergbuurg's designation as a heritage city under the Charter of Anglien is anticipated to generate modest but growing religious tourism from Alexandrian Nazarene communities across the Raspur Pact, a secondary economic benefit of the city's reconstruction that the ducal administration has begun to plan for through a joint heritage development committee with the Autocephalous Nazarene Church of Alexandria.

Fishing and maritime industries

Fishing has been the economic foundation of Anglien since before recorded history. The Anglish tribes took their name from the angelfish, and the heraldic symbol of the duchy reflects an unbroken relationship between the Anglian people and the sea that predates the formation of Cranda itself. Before the NKR insurrection, Anglien's fishing fleets operated across the Clear Sea and along the eastern coastlines, with the Mala'anje cooperative at Kloss among the most productive operations in the canton. Catches of angelfish, flatfish, and seasonal migratory species supported both domestic consumption and export through the Johannsessbuurg and Eesdehaven trading houses.

The NKR's systematic confiscation of fishing boats and equipment between III and V.1753 AN, directed primarily against the Mala'anje community at Kloss but extending to other fishing households thereafter, gutted the industry. The 340-person Kloss cooperative alone lost its entire fleet. By the time Natopian forces secured the canton in late 1754 AN, the fishing industry had effectively ceased to function as an organized economic sector. The Anglian Maritime Service found during its initial coastal surveys that perhaps a third of the pre-occupation vessel count remained operable, the rest having been confiscated, scuttled, or left to deteriorate.

Recovery is underway but slow. The Truth and Reconciliation Commission of Anglien's Chamber of Property and Institutional Crimes has issued binding restitution orders covering over 1,200 properties and assets, including fishing boats and equipment, and a small number have already been returned to surviving owners or their heirs. CATO reconstruction grants have funded the purchase of replacement vessels through New Alexandrian and Natopian shipyards under contracts administered by the Ministry of Finance and Reconstruction. The eastern island chain and the waters around the Purple Isles remain underexploited given the limited fleet, though the maritime conditions in these areas are among the most productive in the region.

Agriculture and natural resources

The interior bailiwicks, including the areas around Bahira, Shelsa, and the Eriksfjord lowlands, supported mixed agriculture before the occupation: grain cultivation, dairy cattle, some timber extraction, and limited mining in the upland areas. The population of these communities was not displaced at the scale suffered by coastal settlements, but NKR agricultural requisitions stripped many farms of livestock and stored reserves. The land registration program administered by the Ministry of Territorial Affairs is the prerequisite for any systematic recovery in the agricultural sector, as ownership of much of the interior farmland was either disputed, abandoned, or fraudulently transferred under NKR authority. As of 1755 AN, approximately 40% of the duchy's arable land has been formally registered, with the remainder subject to ongoing TRCA restitution proceedings.

Timber resources in the hilly interior represent a longer-term asset. Pre-NKR Lac Glaceian development had not significantly exploited Anglien's forestry potential, and fifteen years of reduced human activity have allowed secondary growth across areas previously cleared. Reconstruction demand for lumber is high, and the Ministry of Finance and Reconstruction has identified controlled forestry licensing as one of the few near-term revenue sources that could meaningfully reduce CATO grant dependence within five years.

Demographics

The 1752 AN Lac Glaceian cantonal census recorded a population of 606,938 in Anglien, the last complete enumeration before the NKR insurrection disrupted civil administration. The cantonal census enumerated ethnicity by tribal classification, recording the Anglien canton as 42.8 percent Anglo-Saksen (Angles, Saksens, Balds, and Jutes counted separately), 44.5 percent Crandish, 7.4 percent Glaceian, and smaller percentages of other groups. Post-Charter Anglian publications instead use a broader cultural-Crandish category that incorporates the Anglish inheritance of the Angles into the Crandish total, raising the cultural-Crandish share to approximately 55 to 60 percent. The two figures reflect different categorical conventions rather than a change in the underlying population. Two years of occupation, mass displacement, and the forced expulsion of the Mala'anje and Alexandrian Nazarene communities subsequently reduced the effective resident population substantially. The Ministry of Territorial Affairs estimated the post-occupation population at between 480,000 and 530,000 as of 1755 AN, a range reflecting genuine uncertainty; the land registration program and a census scheduled for 1756 AN are expected to produce more reliable figures. Anglien is ethnically diverse by the standards of its region. The Crandish form the majority, with a substantial Anglo-Saksen minority historically concentrated in the coastal areas and Purple Isles, a community of mixed Crandish-Alexandrian descent concentrated in Bergbuurg and the eastern districts, a smaller but organizationally coherent Alexandrian Nazarene community, a historically significant Mala'anje fishing population, and scattered Norse-Crandish remnants in the interior bailiwicks. All five communities contributed to the resistance against the Nü Krantisk Rapskaff, and all five are represented in the structures of the transitional government, formally or informally.

Crandish

The Crandish are the largest ethnic group in Anglien, comprising an estimated 55 to 60 percent of the pre-occupation population, roughly 330,000 to 365,000 people. They are the lineal descendants of the Anglish tribes who migrated from the northeastern shores of Lyrica to mainland Apollonia around 1493 AN and subsequently merged into the broader Crandish cultural world through the formation of Cranda and later Arminy. Crandish communities are distributed throughout the duchy, with particular concentrations in Bergbuurg, the interior bailiwicks of Bahira and Shelsa, and the agricultural lowlands of Eriksfjord. Crandish is the official language of the duchy and the medium of instruction in schools, government, and the courts.

The majority faith of the Crandish population is the Alpinist religion, a pre-Alexandrian religious system centered on mountain sanctuaries and a pantheon of nature deities associated with the peaks, rivers, and sea passages of the northern Apollonian coastline. Alpine Temple worship involves communal gatherings at temple sites on seasonal feast days, offerings of grain, fish, and carved timber, and an oral mythological tradition maintained by hereditary temple priests. The Nü Krantisk Rapskaff claimed the Alpine Temple tradition as a cultural foundation of Crandish national identity while simultaneously desecrating its institutional sites during the occupation, a contradiction the temple clergy and many Crandish laypeople found incomprehensible. Several temple priests were among the founding members of the Bergbuurg Underground resistance network. The ducal administration has designated the restoration of Alpine Temple sites as a cultural heritage priority under the Charter of Anglien.

Anglo-Saksen

The Anglo-Saksen community constitutes roughly 18 to 22 percent of Anglien's population, concentrated in the coastal settlements, the Purple Isles, and the northeastern strip around Eesdehaven. Anglo-Saksen settlement in Anglien intensified during the Anglo-Saksen Commonwealth (1707 AN--1713 AN), when political union brought migration and administrative personnel into the canton. The community is linguistically and culturally distinct from the Crandish, with a separate oral literary tradition, distinct architectural styles, and a dialect of Anglo-Saksen that differs notably from the mainland varieties spoken in Iselande and adjacent territories.

Anglo-Saksen communities follow the Alpinist religion alongside the Crandish, though with local liturgical variations that have historically caused minor sectarian friction with Crandish temple clergy. These differences involve disputes over seasonal offerings and the authority of hereditary versus appointed temple priests rather than theological substance, and have not historically produced significant social division. NKR ideology formally accepted Anglo-Saksens as participants in Crandish civilizational identity. The community's experience during the occupation varied by location: coastal Anglo-Saksen fishing families in the Purple Isles were largely left alone, while those in mainland communities were subjected to the same movement restrictions and economic impositions as their Crandish neighbors.

Crandish-Alexandrian community

A distinct community of mixed Crandish and Alexandrian descent, sometimes called the Crandish-Alexandrian or Anglish-Alexandrian population, emerged over centuries of intermarriage between Alexandrian settlers and the Crandish majority. The process was substantially accelerated by the Alexandrian flu pandemic of 1651 AN--1652 AN, which killed between seventy and ninety percent of Anglien's population and created conditions in which community boundaries became considerably more permeable. The survivors rebuilt in proximity and often in partnership. By the time Anglien entered the Grand Duchy of Lac Glacei in 1713 AN, this mixed population was already a recognizable presence in the eastern districts and in Bergbuurg, where Alexandrian settlement had historically been densest.

The community is difficult to enumerate precisely. Lac Glaceian census methodology categorized residents by primary language rather than ancestry, and most community members identified as Crandish-speaking for administrative purposes while maintaining Alexandrian family names, observing Alexandrian Nazarene feast days alongside Alpine Temple seasonal rites, and sustaining kinship networks that connected them to both communities. Estimates before the occupation placed the population at roughly 35,000 to 50,000. Their dual identity made them effective intermediaries between the Crandish majority and the Alexandrian Nazarene community, and several prominent members of the Bergbuurg Underground came from Crandish-Alexandrian families. Father Antoine Deschamps, whose survival became the Miracle of Bergbuurg, was himself of this heritage: his mother's family was Alexandrian Nazarene for generations, his father's family Alpine Temple Crandish farmers.

The NKR treated Crandish-Alexandrian ancestry as a liability even where families had long since assimilated into the Crandish mainstream. Cantonal cadres used surname registers and church membership records to identify those with Alexandrian heritage, and several hundred individuals were subjected to harassment, forced labor, or displacement regardless of their professed faith or primary language. In the post-independence period, the community's familiarity with both majority and minority cultures has made Crandish-Alexandrians disproportionately represented among community mediators, bailiwick council staff, and the professional support personnel of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission of Anglien. The Charter of Anglien contains no specific provisions for this community; most are represented through the bailiwick community assembly delegates rather than the appointed minority seats in the Diet of Anglien.

Alexandrian Nazarene community

The Alexandrian Nazarene community of Anglien has been present continuously since the Alexandrian period, predating the Grand Duchy of Lac Glacei entirely. Distinct from the broader Crandish-Alexandrian mixed population, this community comprises families that maintained an unbroken Alexandrian Nazarene religious identity across successive changes of sovereignty, sustaining their faith through the diocese administered from Geneva. They are concentrated primarily in Bergbuurg and the eastern districts, descendants of Alexandrian settlers, traders, and administrators who chose to remain through the empire's collapse and the subsequent population recovery rather than join the broader Alexandrian diaspora. Before the NKR occupation, the community numbered approximately 60,000 to 75,000 people, roughly ten to twelve percent of the cantonal population.

The NKR's campaign against the community began in mid-1753 AN and included the destruction of churches, the expulsion of clergy, and public humiliation of community leaders. The burning of a church outside Johannsessbuurg in X.1753 AN and the attack on Father Antoine Deschamps's parish that produced the Miracle of Bergbuurg were the most widely reported incidents in a broader pattern of persecution. Flight, hiding, and deportation reduced the community's effective presence in the canton to a fraction of its pre-occupation size by the time Natopian forces arrived. The community's formal appeal through Archbishop Boniface VIII, issued from the Holy See of Geneva in Natopian territory, was one of the two principal legal justifications Natopia cited for the intervention. Reconstruction is anchored by Father Deschamps's parish in Bergbuurg and the designated heritage status of the Cathedral-Basilica of Bergbuurg under the Charter. Three appointed delegates in the Diet of Anglien represent Alexandrian Nazarene community interests during the transitional period.

Mala'anje

Main article: Mala'anje

The Mala'anje community of Anglien is small in absolute terms but holds a significance in the duchy's founding narrative disproportionate to its numbers. Before the NKR occupation, an estimated 8,000 to 12,000 Mala'anje lived in Anglien, primarily as fishing families in the coastal communities of the eastern districts and the island chain. They were among the first communities targeted after the establishment of the Nü Krantisk Repüblik in V.1753 AN. Night raids on Kloss households, the disappearance of men who were never found, and the systematic confiscation of fishing boats eliminated the Mala'anje economic base within months. Virtually the entire community had fled or been expelled by mid-1753 AN, most reaching Qorali through the Ke Ala Moana escape network.

The role of Keoni Palakiko and the wider Mala'anje resistance in the events that triggered the Natopian intervention in Anglien has given the community an honored status in the duchy's emerging national identity. The evidence of ethnic expulsion gathered by Mala'anje resistance fighters was paired with Archbishop Boniface VIII's ecclesiastical appeal as the dual foundation of Natopia's legal justification for intervention. Several hundred Mala'anje families have returned since independence, and the Truth and Reconciliation Commission of Anglien's Chamber of Property and Institutional Crimes has prioritized restitution claims from former Mala'anje fishing households. Three appointed delegates in the Diet represent the Mala'anje diaspora community. Kaimana Loloku, first sergeant-major of the Anglian Ducal Guard and veteran of the Koa Kia'i, is the most prominent Mala'anje figure in the post-independence administration.

Norse-Crandish remnants

A small community of Norse-descended or Norse-identifying residents, estimated at roughly 30,000 to 40,000 before the occupation, lives primarily in the interior bailiwicks and the higher elevation areas of Anglien. These communities descend from Norse settlers who entered the territory during Normark's periods of regional influence and remained after the political collapse of the Anglo-Saksen Commonwealth. Culturally, they occupy a middle ground between the Crandish majority and the Norse diaspora communities resettled elsewhere in the Raspur Pact: they speak a local Crandish-inflected Norse dialect at home, follow the Alpinist religion in a form that incorporates Norse mythological elements, and maintain kinship networks extending to Norse diaspora communities in Moorland, Constancia, and Nouvelle Alexandrie.

These interior communities were less affected by NKR violence than the coastal minorities, partly because NKR ideology accepted them as culturally compatible with the Crandish nationalist project. This proximity to the occupying force has complicated their position in the post-independence period, and several interior community leaders face proceedings before the Truth and Reconciliation Commission of Anglien's Chamber of Collaboration and Public Life. Two appointed delegates in the Diet represent this community during the transitional period.

Religion

Main article: Alpinist religion

The Alpinist religion is practiced by an estimated 78 to 80 percent of Anglien's population, making it the overwhelming majority religion and the shared religious culture across the Crandish, Anglo-Saksen, and Norse-Crandish communities. Its institutional structures, including the network of mountain and coastal temple sites and the hereditary temple priesthood, were disrupted during the NKR occupation but are being restored under the duchy's cultural heritage programs. The Ministry of Territorial Affairs of Anglien maintains a registry of 34 protected Alpine Temple sites alongside the Cathedral-Basilica of Bergbuurg and the smaller Alexandrian Nazarene chapels of the eastern districts.

The Alexandrian Nazarene faith, practiced by the Alexandrian Nazarene community and many within the Crandish-Alexandrian population, comprises roughly ten to twelve percent of the pre-occupation population when both groups are counted. The Diocese of Anglien falls under the Archbishop of Geneva. The diocese's historic and titular seat is the Cathedral of St. Aldric in Johannsessbuurg, where the relics of St. Aldric of Anglien rest beneath the high altar; day-to-day diocesan administration has since the post-occupation period been carried out from the Cathedral-Basilica of Bergbuurg, which holds the canonically higher minor basilica designation and serves as the working co-cathedral of the diocese. The diocese holds one cardinal in the Sacred College of the Autocephalous Nazarene Church, representing what the Church designates the "Anglien heritage community." The Charter of Anglien guarantees freedom of religion and prohibits discrimination on the basis of faith, provisions that were among the Diet's most swiftly ratified foundational statutes.

Languages

Crandish is the official language of the Free Duchy and the medium of administration, courts, and public education. Anglo-Saksen and Alexandrian are recognized minority languages under the Charter, entitling speakers to administrative services and education in those languages in communities where they constitute a significant local proportion. In practice, most Anglians are bilingual in Crandish and at least one other language. Coastal and island communities are often trilingual, combining Crandish with Anglo-Saksen and either Alexandrian or the Mala'anje language. The Norse-inflected dialect spoken by the interior Norse-Crandish communities has no formal protected status under the Charter, an omission the Committee on Fundamental Rights of the Diet of Anglien has flagged as a matter for the permanent constitution. The Crandish-Alexandrian community speaks Crandish as its primary language but preserves Alexandrian in family and liturgical contexts, a pattern the Alexandrian Nazarene Church of Anglien has actively maintained through its parish schools.

Media

Main article: Media of Anglien

Anglien's media sector was destroyed during the NKR insurrection. The NKR's cantonal propaganda apparatus suppressed all independent press, expelled or detained journalists who refused to produce approved content, and operated a single centrally controlled broadcaster, Krantisk Stimme ("Crandish Voice"), whose transmitters Natopian forces shut down in IX.1754 AN. Reconstruction has been rapid by the standards of post-conflict states: within twelve months of independence, Anglien had established a functioning public broadcaster, a commercial press, and the regulatory framework required for independent media to operate. The Charter of Anglien's Chapter VII prohibits prior censorship and guarantees the right to publish without ducal license, providing the constitutional foundation on which the sector has been rebuilt.

Public broadcasting

Main article: Anglienen Rundfunk

The Anglienen Rundfunk (AR) is the duchy's public broadcaster, established by ducal decree in XI.1754 AN and modeled broadly on the public service broadcasting systems of northern Apollonia. It is funded through a combination of a household broadcasting levy administered by the Ministry of Finance and Reconstruction and a direct state allocation covering news and minority-language programming costs. AR operates with editorial independence from the ducal administration, enforced by a supervisory board whose members are appointed by the Diet of Anglien rather than the Council of Ministers of Anglien.

AR's television service comprises two channels. AR1 is the main national channel, broadcasting news, current affairs, drama, documentary, and live coverage of Diet sessions and TRCA proceedings. AR2 carries cultural programming, minority-language content, and live coverage of maritime and sports events. Both channels broadcast in Crandish with subtitling in Anglo-Saksen and Alexandrian for news programs. The AR also operates a 24-hour digital news channel, AR Nüs, distributed via satellite and the duchy's nascent broadband network.

AR's radio service operates three national channels. AR Radio 1 carries news, current affairs, and cultural programming, with half-hourly national bulletins and hourly fishing and weather reports that serve the duchy's maritime communities. AR Radio 2 focuses on music and entertainment with lighter news coverage. AR Radio 3 is a youth-oriented channel launched in IV.1755 AN carrying contemporary music, social affairs commentary, and programming produced in partnership with the Technical Institute of Anglien. All three channels carry daily programming blocks in Anglo-Saksen and Alexandrian. A regional service, AR Purple Isles, was established in III.1755 AN to serve the Purple Isles and the eastern island chain, combining national AR content with locally produced programming from the Islands Administration's broadcasting facility at Montrial.

AR maintains a digital presence at ar.ang, providing streaming access to all channels, an archive of TRCA testimony broadcasts, and text news updated around the clock. The website carries a Mala'anje language section administered in partnership with the Mala First Nation's broadcasting service in Qorali, allowing the returning Mala'anje community in Anglien to access content in their language while domestic Mala'anje-language programming capacity is developed.

Commercial media

Angelvisie (Angelfish Vision) is Anglien's sole commercial television broadcaster, launched in III.1755 AN with backing from a consortium of Natopian and New Alexandrian media investors. It operates a single channel focused on entertainment, reality programming, and imported content from Natopia and Nouvelle Alexandrie, with a news bulletin three times daily produced by a small in-house editorial team. Its operating license, issued by the Anglian Media Authority established under the Ministry of Justice, requires a minimum thirty percent locally produced content quota phased in over three years.

Press

The Angliener Dagblatt ("Anglian Daily") is the duchy's national newspaper of record, established in XII.1754 AN by a consortium of Crandish-Alexandrian journalists and former Lac Glaceian civil servants with initial funding from a CATO press development grant. Published in Crandish six days a week from Johannsessbuurg, it carries national and international news, Diet debates, TRCA proceedings, commercial listings, and maritime industry coverage. Its courtroom reporter, Liesbeth Andriessen, has become the duchy's most recognizable journalist through her sustained coverage of TRCA proceedings since the paper's founding. The Dagblatt also publishes a weekly supplement aimed at the CAMA-A advisory community and the Natopian garrison.

The Johannsessbuurg Havenpost ("Harbor Post") is a tabloid daily launched in II.1755 AN, covering local news, sport, fishing industry affairs, and entertainment. It outsells the Dagblatt in Johannsessbuurg itself and has become the preferred paper of the city's working waterfront community.

De Anglish Sprecher is a regional weekly published in Bergbuurg, covering eastern bailiwick affairs, Alexandrian Nazarene community news, and the reconstruction of the Cathedral-Basilica of Bergbuurg. It prints a Crandish and an Alexandrian Istvanistani edition side by side, reflecting Bergbuurg's mixed cultural character.

Eiland Nüs ("Island News") is a fortnightly paper serving the Purple Isles and the eastern island chain, produced by the Islands Administration and distributed by Anglian Maritime Service vessels to communities without reliable postal access. It carries local government notices, fisheries news, and community announcements alongside a page of national summary content licensed from the Dagblatt.

Foreign media and digital access

Natopia's public and commercial broadcasters are received via satellite across most of the duchy, and the Natopian Defense Force garrison's presence accelerated the installation of satellite infrastructure in Johannsessbuurg and Bergbuurg that is now accessible to civilian households. Nouvelle Alexandrie's public broadcaster similarly reaches the duchy by satellite. Print editions of major Natopian and New Alexandrian newspapers arrive in Johannsessbuurg by sea two to three days after publication and are sold at the city's main newsstands and the CAMA-A headquarters canteen. Broadband internet access, while limited to urban areas and the main bailiwick settlements in 1755 AN, is expanding rapidly under the infrastructure rehabilitation program, and online foreign media is accessible to connected households without restriction.
