The Ducal Police Service (Crandan: Atalpolitsie fonn Anglien), commonly the DPS, is the principal civilian police service of the Free Duchy of Anglien. The Service was established by a foundational statute of the Diet of Anglien in XI.1754 AN, one of the twelve adopted in the chamber's first session, and operates under the administrative authority of the Ministry of Justice of Anglien. It is responsible for ordinary criminal policing, the investigation of serious crime, the execution of orders issued by the Truth and Reconciliation Commission of Anglien, witness protection, and operational support to the Office of the Prosecutor of the Special NKR Tribunals of Anglien.
The Director-General of the Service is Jan-Hendrik Velsink, a former Glaceian Army Reserve Department officer who served as a clandestine liaison to the Bergbuurg Underground through the NKR occupation. Velsink was appointed by Justice Minister Hendrik Braam on 28.XI.1754 AN and took office on 1.XII.1754 AN. The Service has grown from approximately 3,200 sworn officers at the close of 1755 AN to approximately 3,800 by end-1756 AN, with the latter figure reflecting the recruitment expansion that followed the St. Aldric's Day Surge of VII.1756 AN.
The Surge was the Service's defining operational event. A DPS plainclothes detail at the Cathedral of St. Aldric in Johannsessbuurg interdicted a vehicle-borne improvised explosive device approaching the perimeter on the morning of 15.VII.1756 AN, the operation's most consequential prevention. The Service secured the TRCA chamber building, the Hinneemik holding facility, and four bailiwick assembly halls during the same operational window. DPS losses were twenty-two killed and approximately seventy wounded, the heaviest the Service had taken since its establishment.
Establishment
The Service was constituted under Charter Chapter III by the Ducal Police Service Ordinance, one of the twelve foundational statutes adopted by the Diet of Anglien in XI.1754 AN. The Ordinance was the third of the foundational twelve to be read in the chamber, after the TRCA procedural rules and the Transitional Judiciary Ordinance. The order of priority reflected the practical demand for civilian policing in a duchy whose pre-occupation police force had been dissolved by the NKR in early 1753 AN and whose informal community-policing arrangements during the occupation had no statutory basis.
The pre-occupation force had been the Lac Glaceian cantonal police, the territorial police arm of the Grand Duchy of Lac Glacei in the Anglien canton. The NKR's consolidation of cantonal authority in early 1753 AN dissolved the cantonal force and replaced it with NKR-aligned auxiliary formations under cantonal-committee authority. Lac Glaceian officers responded variously. Some left the territory. Some went into hiding. Some joined the Bergbuurg Underground or its smaller equivalents in other cantons. A smaller number registered with the NKR-aligned auxiliaries and continued in service, in most cases working from within while feeding intelligence to the resistance, in a few cases collaborating actively. By the spring of 1753 AN the cantonal force had ceased to exist as a coherent institution.
The drafters of the Ordinance had to constitute a police force from scratch on a dispersed personnel base. The weeks between the Charter's promulgation and the Ordinance's adoption were spent in the Ministry of Justice's compound at Kerkgasse on the structural design of the Service: divisional organization, branch structure, ranks, the conditions of arrest and detention, the relationship to the courts and to the TRCA, and the procedural framework for the conduct of investigations. The Ministry's drafting team was led by Hendrik Braam and supported by CAMA-A rule-of-law advisors seconded principally from the New Alexandrian and Aerlan police services.

Organization
Headquarters
The Service is headquartered in central Johannsessbuurg in the former Lac Glaceian cantonal police headquarters on Velsenstraat, refurbished through CATO reconstruction grants in IX–X.1754 AN and operational from XII.1754 AN. The headquarters houses the Director-General's office, the Service's strategic and policy directorates, the Witness Support Unit, the TRCA Enforcement Unit, the Counter-Insurgency Liaison Office, and the Service's principal forensic and technical facilities. The building was the locus of the Surge response's investigative coordination and remained under reinforced security from VII.1756 AN through III.1757 AN.

Special Operations Bureau
The Special Operations Bureau, a standing joint body of the Ducal Police Service and the Anglian Ducal Guard, holds the duchy's specialist intervention capability. Under it, Guard personnel are made available to the Service for tasks beyond the divisions' own capability, and neither service maintains a separate standing specialist unit.
Armed reinforcement of the Special NKR Tribunals is the Bureau's standing task. Under contract, the Service secures the perimeter of the Hinneemik holding facility on the western edge of Johannsessbuurg, the Tribunals' purpose-built site operational since III.1755 AN with capacity for approximately 300 detainees. Guard personnel are detailed to the task through the Bureau. Chapter X of the Constitution of Anglien passes the Tribunals' jurisdiction to the Court for Crimes Against the Constitutional Order.
Both parent services hold intervention capabilities outside the Bureau. Each Guard infantry battalion fields an internal security company for work in support of the Service, along with a quick reaction force held at readiness. The Ministry of Defense has examined a unified special-operations command as a post-transition undertaking, its viability turning on the duchy's finances once Concord Alliance assistance ends.
