Linus Truls Thorgilsson
Linus Truls Thorgilsson, born in Shirekeep in 1644, is a nobleman and diplomat affiliated with the Benacian Union. The son of Kaiser Dominus and grandson of Elwynnese prince Tarjei Einhornson, Linus's early life was unremarkable for someone of his station. The name of his mother is redacted in official records, but is believed to be Sigrid Haabye Truls, elder sister of Frederik Haabye Truls, who is also believed to have joined a complex marriage with Kaiser Dominus. The theory is further strenghtened with the middle name Truls; in Norse tradition, one often bears one's mother's maiden name as a middle name.
Biography
While Linus's father died the same year as he was born, during the Oustfest Massacre, Linus developed a fondness for his late father and the Einhorn line and legacy. As such, it was not surprising that Linus, like most his siblings (such as Tarjei and Katja), became a fervent believer in national humanism. After receiving a humanist education in line with the last will and testament of Kaiser Dominus, he began a career of public service with serving under the Imperial Forces of Shireroth from 1660 to 1665 when he was honourably discharged, he then enrolled at Metzler University to study law. His studies were delayed with the outbreak of the Kalirion Fracture in 1671, during which he was instructed by the Nationalist and Humanist Party to take up residency in Elwynn and aid with the nascent separatist government there, which later came to be the Elwynnese Republic.
He received a master of legal letters from Ardashirshahr's campus of the People's Academy of Elwynn in 1673, and took on employment in the civil service of the Alalehzamini Autonomous Republic. Over the years in the civil service, he rose in the ranks, and by 1689, he was in charge of the taxation office's legal department. His demeanour and work ethic proved popular, and was noticed by the Benacian Union. On 13.III.1702 AN, the High Presidium of the Benacian Union appointed him Legate of the Eastern Apollonian Mission, in effect making him the ambassador of both Elwynn and the Unified Governorates to Hurmu, Lac Glacei, and the International Mandate. Unlike most other ambassadors in Hurmu, his embassy (legation) and residence are not located in Vesüha but in Ghawlama, but he has an annual pass for trips on the Hurmu Gate Network between Ghawlama and Vesüha.
Hurmu
Before his appointment to Hurmu, Linus had never set his foot in Hurmu. However, by birth he was a Knight of the Holy Lakes, and he had worked on double taxation issues with Hurmu Tax Authorities before. He had also voted in the Senate elections of 1690, 1695 and 1701. Despite this, his knowledge of Hurmu was quite small, and even smaller regarding Lac Glacei and the International Mandate. But he was a man who did as he was ordered and took pride in his new position.
He was received by Hurmu's collective head of state, Senate of the Lakes, on 5.IV.1702 in the accreditation ceremony. In this ceremony, occurring at the Palace of the Elenaran, he passed an honour guard in lavender uniforms while being led to the plenary hall. He knocked on the doors outside the plenary hall. Upon being let in, he saw the 18 senators sitting in presence there. Li Naomiai, the presiding officer, shouted out, "Linus Truls Thorgilsson! Why have you come here?"
"The High Presidium of the Benacian Union has accredited me its legate to the Senate of the Lakes."
"Why has it done so?" asked a second senator, this time Alissa Guadalim, a fellow humanist.
"For it values Hurmu's friendship", replied Linus.
"We value High Presidium's friendship, too," said Jan Spiik, the head of the Senate's diplomatic committee.
After this exchange, the entire Senate rose up from their seats, and chanted "We are Hurmu!" loudly six times.
Linus then bowed to the Senate, and walked forward to the table where the Senators sat. He gave each senator a copy of the letter of accreditation from the High Presidium, and he placed the original on top of a pedestal in front of the table where the Senators were sitting.
The Senators all took a time to read it, and then each one of them walked to the pedestal and individually stamped two documents next to it – the documents that causes the Senate accept Linus's designation as legate, one to be kept in the Senate's archives and one to be sent back to the High Presidium.
Then Daniyal al-Osman, prime minister, rose and declared, "Let it be known that on this day, the seventeenth day of the third month of the year sixteen ninety-one, the Senate of the Lakes has welcomed the legate of the High Presidium of the Benacian Union, His Excellency Linus Truls Thorgilsson, Knight of the Holy Lakes."
Each senator then walked up to Legate Thorgilsson, and gave him the traditional Hurmu greeting: The Senator puts his right hand on Thorgilsson's left shoulder, and Thorgilsson places his right hand on the Senator's left shoulder, and look into each other's eyes for a few seconds, before letting go. Each of the 18 senators did so, and then they handed him the document accepting his status.
The Senate then had luncheon with Linus.
