MARCEL DE LA CROIX DIES IN CAR ACCIDENT
Marcel de la Croix, leader of the Progressive Federalist Party, has died in a car accident in Cárdenas.
Upon arrival at the scene just in the outskirts of the city, police discovered that a white SUV was struck by a freight truck.
The investigation found that the vehicle rolled during the crash and De la Croix was ejected from the vehicle. Investigators also determined that he was not wearing a seatbelt during the time of the accident.
De La Croix was pronounced dead at the scene.

PROGRESSIVE FEDERALISTS NAME ROBERT BEAUJOLAIS AS INTERIM LEADER
Party reeling from the sudden death of its leader threw government process into chaos
Cárdenas, FCD -- Reeling from the death of its leader, Marcel de la Croix, the Progressive Federalists met in the city of Cárdenas for an emergency meeting to select its new interim leadership.
Just as the party had reached a deal with the Federal Humanist Party, its leader, Marcel de la Croix, died tragically in a car accident, prompting a crisis of leadership in the party after coming in third in the 1693 general election.
Robert Beaujolais is a Deputy from Alduria, elected unanimously to serve as the leader of the party in the interim. He will also lead the Parliamentary Caucus of the left-wing party, which counts 162 seats in the Federal Assembly.

ECONOMY STARTS 1694 WITH MODEST GAINS
Punta Santiago, Alduria -- Economic growth continued at a modest pace through the end of 1693 and starting 1694, according to the Bureau of Economic Statistics (BES).
Businesses remain optimistic about the year to come and demand for housing throughout the Federation remains “robust,” says Dr. Stephen J. Teller, Director of the Bureau of Economic Statistics. “The job market is showing slower growth, but remains on a path of improvement.”
The Bureau of Economic Statistics releases a yearly report on the economic state of the country. The report contains data, analysis, surveys, and anecdotes from the New Alexandrian economy. The report indicates that some negative factors are labor shortages among some businesses - mainly manufacturing, construction, and agriculture. Other related issues are child care, rising prices, input costs increases, and wage pressures to fill open jobs.
The latest BES report gave voice to what recent economic data has shown: a growing and developing economy with incredible breakout potential, but which will need significant public and private investment for this growth to occur.
BES forecasters anticipate economic growth considered to be “modest” and “slight” moving forward. While markets rejoiced at the news of a National Unity Government, investors and businesses remain cautious and wish to see how the new Government will start its term.
The brightest spot perhaps was residential real estate, where a number of districts reported continued strength in construction, sales, and purchases of real estate.
Housing prices in many districts rose sharply as buyers competed for a limited supply of homes. In cities like Punta Santiago and Parap, some realtors reported that houses “frequently sell within an hour, often sight-unseen.”

ALKHIVA OIL SPILL REACHES TAB IN THE TENS OF MILLIONS OF ÉCU
ALKHIVA, ALDURIA -- A massive oil spill off the coast of Alkhiva, Alduria is being called the worst ecological disaster in the country’s history. The cause and the full extent of the damage is still unknown, but New Alexandrian authorities have launched an investigation in coordination with regional authorities. Several tankers as well as the refinery facility in Alkhiva are under suspicion.
According to government officials, some 70 tons of tar and contaminated material have been scraped off and collected along the area's shores since cleanup efforts began. Beaches have been shut down, and the sale of fish and other seafood from the area is now prohibited.
Under Premier Lavaud, the government approved a €13.8 million response budget that will come from the regional-based Fund for the Prevention of Marine Pollution, created 10 years ago to pay for cleanups as well as equipment and training to respond to oil spills. The military and other authorities have also incurred other costs as they assist with the cleanup and the investigation.
There is still a fog of war with respect to what happened. Several ships are under investigation as well as the oil facility. Allegations of carelessness and negligence have surfaced, but no concrete evidence has come up. Whoever is found responsible, this disaster will raise questions about how the regulations and liability of oil spills and environmental pollution are handled.

NEW DIRECTOR TAKES OVER TOP DEFENSE RESEARCH OFFICE
CÁRDENAS, FCD — The National Research and Development Corporation, the top research and development arm of the New Alexandrian military, has a new leader.
Gustave Charles has succeeded the retiring chief, Frank Martinez, as Director of the NRDC. He previously served as Deputy Director of the NRDC for six years, prior to that Charles served as an engineer and scientist in the research team. Charles is a former army intelligence officer, graduated from the Imperial University of Alexandria in Triegon, Natopia.

NOUVELLE ALEXANDRIE & HURMU SIGN TREATY PROTECTING ANCIENT LYRICAN HOLY SITES AND RUINS
Heralds new age of good relations between Lyrican neighbors
Cárdenas, FCD -- The Hurmu Ruins Treaty has been approved by the Council of State and signed by His Majesty King Manco Capac I earlier today in a ceremony in Carranza Palace.
The Hurmu Ruins Treaty commits Nouvelle Alexandrie to cooperate with its Lyrican neighbor, the nation of Hurmu, in protecting important holy sites and ruins to Hurmu in New Alexandrian Lyrican territory.
"Nouvelle Alexandrie and Hurmu have a new friendship and this is the next stage of cooperation between our countries," said H.M. the King. "This is what being a good neighbor is. There is a beautiful saying that is central to the Wechua faith and culture. Llaqtakunaq atipayninwan, teqrimuyuta kuyuchisunchis. When the villages work together, we will turn this world around."
The Treaty is considered an important step in opening further avenues for regional cooperation in the future with Nouvelle Alexandrie's Lyrican neighbor.
"Now we have to wait for the Cortes to decide on this. I respect the constitutional processes in this country in which I am guest, and the democratic will of the New Alexandrian people," said the Ambassador to Nouvelle Alexandrie from Hurmu. "We will simply have to wait and see what the Cortes says. I am optimistic however! These holy sites are important to the Hurmudans. For centuries they have been places of pilgrimage and worship. For us to be allowed back without let or hindrance, as during the Storish period, during these sites were constantly blasphemed and access restricted. It would be such a privilege to have this access right, for the sites to be protected and sanctified once again. What a gift it would be. A gift that we will never forget."
The Treaty will now be sent later this legislative session by the Government for ratification in the Cortes Federales.
