The Imperial Armed Forces (IAF) is the land branch of the Jingdaoese military. Its history can be dated back to Batavian colonial times, when the first Batavians established South Batavia (what later would become Jingdao). The Armed Forces are without doubt the backbone of the Jingdaoese defences, which has often brought it in conflict with the Navy.

It consists of a wide array of ethnicities, from which most were trained and prepared for warfare in their youth. Most officers spent their youth as member of the Young Wandering Society and were picked out from among the most promising 14-year olds to join the Imperial Kadetten, whom received a better military education on the costs of the State.

It's not abnormal to see non-Jingdaoese rise through military ranks (especially after having proven their loyalty during military conflicts).

Army regions

The ten Army Theaters.

In warfare, a theater is an area or place in which important military events occur or are progressing. A theater includes the entirety of the air space, land and sea area that is or that may potentially become involved in war operations.

The Jingdaoese Imperial Armed Forces divided their Army Theatres across their mainland and oversea possessions to ease the organisation and planning of defences and offensive actions throughout the realm.

Structure of Units

The most typical variety of Army units are structured as follows:

Type of Unit Banner Army Field Army / Legion Corps Division Brigade Regiment Cohort Platoon Squadron Fire Team
Contains 3 Corps 5 Corps 2 Divisions 2 Brigades 5 Regiments 2 Cohorts 5 Platoons 2 Squadrons 10 Fire Teams 5 Individuals

Organisation

The five Banner Armies count up to 250,000 soldiers and consist of solely Jingdaoese troops. Non-Jingdaoese are denied joining the Banner Army, which made them a hotbed of political intrigues and the most conservative (or even reactionary) groups within the military.

Their main goal is mostly symbolic, as they don't see much warfare. They protect the peace within the borders, keep order in the cities, squash rebellions and act as a last line of defence. Three of the five Banner Armies are called Tegong Banner Armies, aligned with the Tegong. Another is the Heavenly Banner Army, acting as army of the Heavenly Light (and mainly limited to the surroundings of the capital), and the fifth is known as the Apollonian Banner Army, composed of Jingdaoese whose ancestors only joined the Armed Forces when the Empire established control over Kildare.
