Biography
Early life & career
Born of a family raised to the non-titled "service nobility" by the Steward and Dictator Waldemar Zinkgraven during the War of the Casks. Adherent of the Covenanted Nazarene Church of Benacia and a lay preacher. Assigned to the coastal defence demi-regiment stationed in Lapano on the island of Florencia whilst a junior tribune in the Maritime Forces of the Black Legions. Inter-Service Benacian Snooker Competition silver medalist (1689, 1691) and gold champion (1690). Commander of a garrison of the Corps of Invalids from 1694 AN to 1703 AN. Promoted to senior tribune and posted to command of the Coastal & Littoral Defence Establishment at Buccisi (1703 AN–1704 AN). His study of Sanaman naval reforms and tactics was interrupted by the news of his quite unexpected appointment to Court of Commissioners for the governance of the Mehrshahr Special Economic Zone. After consultation with the General Staff Council in Merensk and the High Presidium of the Benacian Union in Chryse, it was decided to treat the appointment as being serious. Accordingly the senior tribune von Hutten was transferred to the External Service of the Benacian Union and assigned to the Euran Mission. Having attended upon the Commissioner for Foreign Affairs at her residence on the island of Botha, where he receieved the necessary letters of credence and introduction, as well as a strongbox containing a store of gold Benacian sovereigns as would be required for transacting business with Eurans, he subsequently made his way by scheduled air services to Raspur where he reported to the head of mission, the legate Hostilian Gortz, on 8.VI.1704 AN.
Euran service
Arriving in Mehrshahr, following on from presenting his credentials to the royal court of the Suren Confederacy in Surenshahr, Ulrich took up his place on the Court of Commissioners, in whom all plenipotentiary power was vested. Sitting alongside him were Ahmeras Dekalion, Andrea Pandes, Aniketos Pachis and Isabella Merrick I "Genitrix", with Ahmeras Dekalion as the first Governor of the Special Economic Zone.
In 1708 AN the Court of Commissioners for Mehrshahr were placed in subordination to the Committee of Euran Salvation.
The zone faced its own fair share of dangers and challenges, with the Kapavian insurgency and then the Wars of the Disinherited disrupting trade and bringing terrorism to the streets of the city.
Following reprimand by a court of honour, he resigned his commission in the BUDF with effect from 1721 AN, thereafter continuing in Mehrshahr as a private citizen.
Death
In spite of taking prudent precautions for his own security, Ulrich's residence was stormed by Babkhan nationalists during the fourth month of 1730 AN. Ulrich's butchered remains were subsequently hung from a lamppost along with the mutilated corpses of his hired close-protection detail.
Family
Ulrich was known to have married Magda Talbert, a woman of Amokolian ancestry, in 1689 AN, having first made her acquaintance on the Benacian Snooker tour circuit. Their union yielded one son, Franz, who was born in 1692 AN. Regrettably both perished during the Scouring, which resulted in the destruction of Islus.
His second marriage was arranged through the N&H Future Leadership Programme which paired him with Clara Smalt, one of the many war widows created as a tragic legacy of the Second Elwynnese Civil War. This union, although difficult, yielded a daughter Eva von Hutten, born in 1702 AN. The marriage ended in divorce in 1720 AN, with Clara presenting the convened court of honour with evidence of Ulrich's serial infidelity during his posting to Mehrshahr. Ulrich's attempt to cite the example of Lors Bakker-Kalirion as a precedent for the manner in which he sought to organise his Euran household was dismissed by the court, and he was further reprimanded for behaving in a manner contrary to the standards expected of a Benacian officer. His retirement from service was accordingly expected to follow.
