Riskai, officially the Kingdom of Riskai (Norse: Riskaiar Konungsríki), is a theocratic monarchy in eastern Keltia. Ruled by the House of Rossheim, for much of its history it has been a dependency of more powerful empires, notably Stormark and Minarboria. It has suzerainty over Varmland.
Geography
The Kingdom is located on the North Island of Feanoria, in eastern Keltia.
History
Riskai was originally part of the Kingdom of Nidaros, an autonomous realm subject to Stormark. In 1539 AN, the High King of Stormark, Harald Thorstein, granted the city of Riskai together with the surrounding land to Pope Magnus Camillus II of the Holy Nidarosian Church, establishing the Grand Duchy of Riskai-Nidarosia and the Apostolic Plateau. The Pope subsequently named the King of Sangun, Antoku, as his successor, thereby marking the beginning of the area's long association with the Sangunese monarchy.
Following the Magnus Camillus's death, Riskai was inherited by the Sangunese monarch, who was proclaimed Grand Duke of Riskai in 1555 AN and ruled the small state as a Storish dependency. An attempt to merge Riskai into the first Greater Sangunese Empire in 1567 AN proved abortive however, and Riskai's separate identity was restored later that year, when the grand duchy was elevated into a kingdom.
In 1573 AN, the Kingdom of Riskai was combined with the Jarldom of the Idunn Isles to form the Kingdom of Riskai and the Idunn Isles, which itself finally united with Sangun in 1581 as the Kingdom of Sangun, Riskai and the Idunn Isles. The reign of Antoku's successor, Sadamara Aptrgangr, saw links to Stormark weaken, with the combined realm eventually becoming a dependency of the Empire of Minarboria in 1635 AN.
Stormark reasserted control over Riskai in the aftermath of the fall of Minarboria and administered the area for the next thirty-seven years. When the High Realm itself collapsed in 1685 AN, Riskai reasserted its de-facto independence under a succession of local regents, the last of whom offered the vacant throne to the sole remaining descendent of the House of Rossheim, Mondo Etzeterra, who was proclaimed king on 20.III.1702 AN.
