The Aemilianische Bundesbahnen (abbreviated as ABB) are the national railroad company of the Aemilian Federation. The company owns all railroad connections in Aemilia and is wholly owned by the federal government. The company was created in II.1742 to combine the passenger and cargo operations of LanzerwaldSpoor and the Vereinigte Staatseisenbahn (VSE), as part of the integration of the United Principalities into the Aemilian Federation that started following the Aemilian intervention in the United Principalities in 1741.

At first the LanzerwaldSpoor passenger and cargo operations, and the Vereinigte Staatseisenbahn were administratively brought under the umbrella of the ABB. This situation meant that in the first months of the merger, passengers did not notice any differences between the services that they had enjoyed in the antebellum compared to the situation after the war. Engineers from LanzerwaldSpoor and the VSE discussed the technical difficulties of a merger, with the idea that starting on the first day of 1750, the entire rail network would adhere to the same standards. Engineers from the manufacturing side of LanzerwaldSpoor, which had become a separate company, and the Weisenburger Maschinefabrik (WMF) were also brought in to the discussions, as the ABB realised modernisation of the rail network would require coordination with domestic industries. In a memorandum, LanzerwaldSpoor was tasked with the construction of tracks, signals, communication devices, and multiple-unit trains for passenger transport, while the Weisenburger Maschinefabrik would build bogies and other heavy parts for the multiple-unit trains built by LanzerwaldSpoor, and would also construct locomotives and rolling stock for goods transport, using the communications devices built by LanzerwaldSpoor to be able to adhere to rail safety regulations of the Aemilian Federation.

In the summer of 1743, the first major construction on the rail network began. Between Stadt Sankt Rosa, a rail line was constructed to Weisenburg, with stops in Altstadt, Altdorf, BĂźlow and JĂźrichen. The new line would follow parts of the route of the Coast Tram and the existing lines of the VSE, but new bridges were built and tracks were moved to achieve larger curve radii, and fewer curves in general. This was done to be able to utilise trains that could drive at speeds of 240 kilometres per hour. In the old jurisdictions of the Aemilian Federation freight lines had not been electrified, they were operated by LanzerwaldSpoor Frachtlokomotive 1500 locomotives, so an effort began to electrify these lines so they could also be serviced with WMF locomotives, like the WMF-Baureihe 558.

In 1744, construction of light-rail and tram lines in the cities of the new jurisdictions started. The region of Altstadt-Altdorf-BĂźlow was the first to receive a light-rail network, in other cities constructions was mostly limited to tramway tracks over existing roads. But one of the goals Theodor Katzenfreund had with the integration process, was to create a metropolitan area around Altdorf, so for him it was a logical starting point for the extension of the railroad network.
