Hergilsey (/hɛr.gɪlz.eiː/ HEHR-gilz-ay), officially the Palatinate of Hergilsey, is an autonomous community of Meckelnburgh in northern Apollonian. Hergilsey sits alongside the Royal City of Alexandretta and the four geographic provinces to form metropolitan Meckelnburgh, a constituent unit of the Kingdom of Meckelnburgh. It has a total area of about 23,600 km2 (9,100 sqmi) with a population of 333,000 as of 1722 AN. The capital and largest city is Fríða.

The palatinate encompasses the entirety of Glanurchy Island and the islet of Cuirfimid Báis to its north. The island sits in the Northern Sea, north of mainland Meckelnburgh across the Welk Strait, above the province of Brittnay. As part of the Ashintully Volcanic Belt, Hergilsey is continuously grown by volcanic activity from Mt. James, a stratovolcano on which the entire palatinate sits. The majority of the population lives in Fríða on the north shore and its second largest settlement, Hellani, on its south shore.

Etymology

The name of "Hergilsey" comes from the Froyalanish language, referring to a mythical island of magical qualities in that heritage.

Meckelnburgh Partition

By the late 1710s AN, sectarian division escalated between mainland Meckelnburgh, inhabited principally by the Meckelnish, and the arctic peoples of the Britannics and Froyalaners, who lived in Hergilsey. These conflicts centered on the limited recognition that the regional minority peoples enjoyed under Meckelnburghish law, including limited access to speak the language of their peoples. Protests erupted in Hellani on 10 Mae/VI, 1720 AN followed by riots at the Stadium of Fire in Fríða.

Acknowledging the traditional rift between the mainland and northern Meckelnish peoples, Queen Ĉielero III decreed a referendum for Hergilsey autonomy under the Meckelnburgh constitution for the third week of Quintile/IX, 1721 AN. Residents of Hergilsey as well as all ethnic Britannics and Froyalaners in Meckelnburgh were eligible voters. On 15 Quintile/IX, 71.2% of voters agreed to the Meckelnburgh Partition and to create an autonomous community. The Palatinate of Hergilsey was enacted on 1 Sextile/X.

Climate

The Palatinate of Hergilsey is covered in "severely cold" boreal (Dd classification) and has only a few months with an average temperature above 10 °C, and reaches −38 °C in deep winter.
