Verionia, officially the Verionian State (Martino: Estado Verioniano) is an island nation in the Great Western Sea, to the East of the continent of Keltia. Verionia was founded in 1686 by Verionist supporters of Regina Verion following the disintegration of Gran Verionia and its occupation by Alduria and Arbor.
Etymology
The name Verionia is derived from the House of Verion, a noble house that originated in Elwynn and which gained prominence in 16th century Shireroth, with members holding high office including that of Prince of Elwynn, Queen of Goldshire and Kaiser.
History
The origins of the Verionian State lie in the Kalirion Fracture, an event that greatly upset the power dynamics in Benacia. Several prominent Shirithian Verionists seceeded from the Imperial Republic and established the Verionist Republic. The Verionist Republic claimed to be the official successor state of the Imperial Republic of Shireroth, since Titus Morvayne claimed the Imperial Throne. Effectively, the Verionian Republic consisted of Greater Elsenar, Skyla and later Monty Crisco. Enduring conflict with Ransenar characterised the Verionist state on Benacia. When Ransenar alligned itself with the Raspur Pact, the Verionist forces on the continent found themselves in a struggle for power. The Verionist political organisations in Elwynn were banned. The Great Disaster of 1675 marked the end of the Verionist Republic, in addition, several prominent Verionists and their allies died when Nakalma flight 731 crashed in the same year. Regina Verion moved, with a handful of supporters, to Keltia where her uncle Miqah had been rallying the sovereign tribes of South East Keltia and proclaimed the Verionian Empire. Not long after, several Martino-speaking parts of Keltia alligned themselves with the Verionians, resulting in the Union of 1682 that established Gran Verionia. Hostility between the Verionians and the Raspur nation continued to linger and reached a high point with the Verionian-Raspur War. The massive expansion of the country, and the cultural differences between the regions caused friction from the start. The government of Godolphin Viqh fell following a failed referendum and a split between the Martino-speaking West and North, and the Soufi-speaking South East emerged after. The Verionian government, located on the island of Valarion in the far South, struggled to gain legitimacy. Corruption and crime, mostly related to drug trafficking was rampant and undermined the government. In 1686, the South-Eastern States of Torosh and Souf became part of the Emirate of Arbor. Meanwhile the Martino-speaking West, with a significant population of Alexandrian descendants, became part of the Alduro-Wechua Federation. The Verionist loyalists, in need of protecting the economic interests of the Iron Company, moved to a nearby island where they established a continuation of the Verionian State.
