Mariana Starke, N&H political officer attached to the General Staff of Benacia Command.

Education

Early life up to the age of seven largely unknown. An orphan on account of the Scouring, her date of birth was recorded by a displaced persons camp outside of Vijayanagara and may not be reliable. Following the liquidation of the camp by the Elwynnese Landstorm she was assessed to display Norse characteristics and was thus spared from the fate experienced by many Elw and Cimmerians during the pacification of Upper Elwynn following the Second Elwynnese Civil War.

Assessed to be clear of any latent defects or symptoms of radiological poisoning, she was declared fit for service and was therefore purchased into service by representatives of the N&H National Sector Party of Elluenuueq, which assumed responsibility for her education and indoctrination. Sent to Thorgilsby with other foundlings purchased in the high north, she survived the 1698–1699 famine, during which the instructors noted with approval the guile and ferocity with which she snatch away food from other children sometimes far stronger than herself. Selected for assessment, she was in 1700 AN tested by the Internal Security Bureau of Benacia Command and was found suitable for their needs. She was accordingly placed at a school attached to the Military Intelligence Directorate Training Station in Gloomburg until 1705 AN.

Whilst resident in Gloomburg she was transferred as a subject into the cadres of the N&H National Sector Party of the Unified Governorates. Enrolled in the Humanist Vanguard, she responded favourably to ideological conditioning and was considered for enlistment into the Vanguard Division, however the Internal Security Bureau demurred and preferred to retain her for its own purpose.

In the year 1705, at the age of sixteen, she was presented to the Honourable Company as a suitable candidate for an apprenticeship with its Benacian Directorate. Seemingly astute, she was able to meet the Honourable Company's required standards in numeracy and literacy, and was assessed to be fluent in Praeta and Istvanistani. Taken into the service of the Honourable Company on the basis of a long-term loan, she thereby became a "triple indenture", one beholden to the three paramount powers in the Benacian Union at that time.

Career

Attached to the ESB residency at Musica, her shrewd and observant nature became noted by her superiors, resulting in her transfer to the Benacian bureau of the ESB Intelligencer in 1708 AN.

Accompanied the 11th Army into Kalgachia during Operation Penitent (1716–1717).

Resident in Shirekeep as a correspondent from 1717 AN to 1730 AN. Liaison of Benacia Command to Pact Loyalist Forces (Banner Group South) (1717–1724). Under the guise of operating as a correspondent for the ESB Intelligencer, she obtained detailed plans for the Royal Ordnance Factory Lichkeep, which the General Inspectorate of Benacia Command subsequently failed to exploit during Operation Jagdbeute (1724). With the deteriorating relations between Shireroth and the Benacian Union after 1724, she was obliged to go to ground and confine her activities to the Shirekeep Benacian Institute where she received the position of mistress of discipline for the duration of her residency there.

Whilst obliged to reside in Cabbagefall for an extended period she nonetheless was instrumental in overseeing the transition of the Imperial Humanist Party of Shireroth and its vanguard division from a hierarchical organisation to a cellular one.

A rare measure of favour was shown to her upon her exfiltration from Shirekeep in 1730 AN, with an appointment to the vacated seat of the Director of Military Intelligence on the General Staff of Benacia Command. The choice of such an appointee being an indication of the importance that was now to be placed upon those stay-behind networks.
