Los Bananos, officially the Bailiwick of Los Bananos (Norse: Los Bananos fylke; until 1691 AN, Duchy of Los Bananos), is a high-Arctic island at the northwestern edge of the Keltian continent. Nouvelle Alexandrie occupied and annexed the island in 1738 AN following the collapse of Normark. It is administered as an unincorporated Outremer territory and hosts Arctic Base Thorgils, a permanent New Alexandrian military installation established during Operation Polar Crown that supports the Boreal Air Bridge.
History
The Kingdom of Batavia entered diplomatic relations with Flandristan, which donated the colony on 31.XV.1523 AN in connection with the revival of Batavia. The colony was initially called Nieuw-Dietsland and was renamed Los Bananos in 1524 AN. The reason for the change and the origin of the name are unknown. The island was claimed in 1539 AN; the surviving account does not explain why the island and its capital share the same name.
The Treaty of the Northern Hereditary Lands, concluded in 1680 AN, transferred Los Bananos to the sovereignty of Francia. In 1685 AN, the island became Batavian and was transferred to Normark in 1691 AN.
In 1690 AN, the island's population, which had developed close informal relations with Normark, voted in a referendum to accede to Normark and Elwynn. The transfer was complete in 1691 AN. The following decades under Norse administration changed the island's public character. Norse administrators, merchants, and settlers from mainland Normark tied Los Bananos closely to the Norse mainland. By the eve of New Alexandrian annexation, Norse was the predominant language of public life and the island's civic identity was Norse rather than Batavian or Germanian. The older influences remained part of the island's history, but no longer described its contemporary population.
The Benacian Union's Union Defence Force considered building a base on the island, but the Nordhær established one in 1703 AN following Normark's independence. Los Bananos later hosted the exiled King of Normark, Tarjei Thorgilsson, from XIV.1719 AN after the Kingdom's reverses during its attempt to liberate Dalen from the Confederacy of the Dispossessed.
Following the collapse of Normark, Nouvelle Alexandrie occupied and annexed Los Bananos in 1738 AN. Operation Polar Crown, conducted from 15.VI.1738 AN to 30.VIII.1738 AN, established New Alexandrian control and created Arctic Base Thorgils. The base provides a permanent military presence and serves as the northern terminus of the Boreal Air Bridge. New Alexandrian military and technical personnel added a federal layer to the island's population without displacing its established Norse civic culture.
Government and administration
Los Bananos is an unincorporated Outremer territory under direct federal authority. Under the Proclamation of Punta Santiago, the King's executive authority is exercised through the executive government established in his name, with the Council of State overseeing the use of the Federal Forces of Nouvelle Alexandrie. Civilian administration is therefore conducted through federal departments under Crown-in-Council oversight rather than through a regional government.
The Regional and Local Government Organization Act, 1699 establishes a Governor, Chief Executive, and elected Legislative Council for the Overseas Territory of Jaris in Article 13. Those offices are specific to Jaris and are not established for Los Bananos by the Act. Los Bananos consequently has no regional governor or elected territorial legislature under its current arrangement. A separate organic law would be required to establish a local charter or representative body.
Military authority is separate from civil administration. The Federal Forces of Nouvelle Alexandrie provide the federal military authority for Arctic Base Thorgils, while Keltia Command coordinates allied operations at the theater level in northern Keltia. Major General Isabelle Nordström is the base commander. She commands the installation and its assigned personnel, not the civilian territory as a whole.

Military installation
Arctic Base Thorgils is the principal New Alexandrian military presence on Los Bananos. Established during Operation Polar Crown in 1738 AN, it serves as the northern terminus of the Boreal Air Bridge and as a major surveillance, airlift, naval-support, and arctic-defense facility. The base covers approximately 145 square kilometers and includes a 3,000-meter all-weather runway, a deepwater fjord and port with icebreaker support, long-range radar, missile-defense systems, and electronic-intelligence facilities.
The base has approximately 3,200 permanent personnel and 600 rotating specialist personnel. Its principal formations include an Arctic Warfare Battalion, Air Wing Polaris, Electronic Warfare Unit Hyperion, and a Naval Support Group. The installation also supports the 300th Air-Land Combined-Arms Army and maintains liaison arrangements with Raspur Pact partners. Its position makes Los Bananos a major federal logistics and early-warning site in northern Keltia.
Demographics
An administrative estimate places the population of Los Bananos at 13,900 in 1759 AN. Approximately 10,100 are civilian residents, while the remainder consists primarily of the 3,200 permanent personnel and 600 rotating specialists assigned to Arctic Base Thorgils. The estimate reflects the island's decades of Norse administration and its later incorporation into the New Alexandrian military and logistics system rather than the much smaller pre-Normark baseline.
The 1692 AN census recorded 8,369 people before the main period of Norse settlement and institutional integration. During the Normark period, Norse administrators, garrison personnel, service households, and settlers from mainland Normark established a durable Norse-speaking majority. Norse remains the predominant language of public life. Alexandrian and Martino are used in federal and military administration, while older Batavian and Germanian influences are principally historical and no longer describe the territory's contemporary demographic balance.
