Exercise Northern Shores was a sudden field exercise of the Imperial Constancian Armed Forces to test the readiness of Zylenisí, Augustinium and territory of the Company of Merchant Adventurers to New Lands for battle, premised on the assumption of a sudden attack from external forces with zero time for preparation.

This was a timely exercise, as no exercise affecting these territories had ever happened.

Prelude

Governor-General Alexei Grobba and members of his staff were given unofficial, unspecific recommendations only a few days before through informal channels, but nothing of substance was communicated to him, his staff, or any government or military entity within the islands.

X-Day

On H-Hour on X-Day, a FLASH-PRIORITY message was sent to the Governor-General through all available means: office email and telephone call, personal cellphone text message to him and all his staff, and ultimately, a cellphone call coming from an unlisted number. The screen on his phone merely said, AUTOKRATOR.

On answering the call, he heard an almost-disembodied voice ask: "Is this Governor-General Alexei Grobba?"

When he replied in the affirmative, he heard an electronic squelch followed by some tonal noise. This was followed by the same disembodied voice saying, "Authentication successful. Greetings, Governor-General. This is the Imperial Chancellery of the Office of the Autokrator of Constancia. Listen carefully:

"You are to place Zylenisí on full military alert and maximum readiness until further notice. Additional instructions will follow. Acknowledge the order."

He acknowledged the order, and the call ended.

The puzzlement on his face was reflected on the faces of his immediate staff.

Similar results were experienced in Augustinium and the territory of the Company of Merchant Adventurers to New Lands.

Result

The exercise revealed that a bare minimum of 12 hours lead time was necessary to mobilize and transport troops from Shahzamin to Zylenisi aboard a Rhodondra-class amphibious assault ship, with each ship able to carry a regiment and a half. Air Transport was also possible, cutting the time by half, but still requiring disruption from the usual operations of the Imperial Constancian Airways Corporation.
