The SA1680 (Small Arms for the 1680s) is a Florian family of 5.56×45mm Raspur Pact service weapons used by the Confederate States Armed Forces. The weapon system replaced the Benacian manufactured M1686 assault rifle weapon system as the main service rifle in 1711 AN under the 1711 Act. The weapon operates by the conventional method of gas and piston with a rotating bolt. The rifle is capable of being operated in a select fire mode with the operator having the choice of shifting between semi-automatic (Repetition) or automatic (burst).
The family is built in a bullpup layout (the action is behind the trigger group), with a forward-mounted pistol grip. The main advantage of this type of arrangement is the overall compactness of the weapon, which can be achieved without compromising the barrel length. Though it has a smaller effective firing range and rate of fire than its predecessor, the weapon system has better recoil control and accuracy however the disadvantage of the weapon system is that it is almost two kilograms heavier than the M1686. Despite this, the weapon system is very versatile and can be converted into carbine or LSW form.
Unlike the M1686 assault rifle, the rifle does not fire Raspur Pact standard 7.62 calibre rounds and instead fires 5.56 calibre rounds instead. The weapon system can also be fitted with an underslung grenade launcher, often seen used on a section grenadiers weapon system. Advantages of the system are low recoil, ease of use, reduced ammunition weight and ability to have a chambered grenade at the ready whilst continuing to fire the SA1680. The weapon system can also be fitted with a bayonet should a soldier run out of ammunition and still need to engage the enemy.
