Mercury general election, 2019
The Mercury general election of 2019 was held in June 2019 to elect the fourth Mercurian Parliament. Voting took place in all nine states, each electing a number of representatives, using the Sainte-Laguë system.
Overview
This was the first general election since the agreement to create the condominium of New Sussex. The National Party remained in coalition with the Livingston Democrats following the 2016 general election. Three parties contested 295 out of the 300 seats, excluding three seats in Qavaqaqqaqqaniitqeqertaq and two seats in Lusa.
Nationwide parties
- National Party – led by new leader Nick Perry, following the retirement of Joe Foxon. The National Party were the largest party in the governing coalition coming into the election.
- Conservative Party – led by Melissa Barnes, officially the opposition party in the previous Parliament.
- Mercurian Labour Party – led by Caroline Griffiths.
Lusa
- Faatasi le Nuu – led by Suivai Umataua, the majority party in the Fono le Lusa. The party's two representatives only vote on issues concerning Lusa.
North Antarctica
- Livingston Democrats – led by William Robertsen. The Livingston Democrats were the second party in the governing coalition.
- People's Front – led by Joachim Sanchez, who again contested a number of mainland seats, in addition to those in North Antarctica.
Nova English Korea
- Independent England – led by Angela Pike, came into the election with 19 seats. The party won 45 out of the 100 seats in the 2014 Witan elections.
Qavaqaqqaqqaniitqeqertaq
- Ataatsit Pissiippaa – led by Inuaq Suersaq.
- Qeqertaq Ilagiit – led by Peder Jensen.
Result
The National Party suffered catastrophic losses across the nation, with a 19-seat reduction in May being their biggest casualty. Many pundits put this down to the retirement of Joe Foxon as party leader, with voters choosing to opt for a party more closely aligned to their politics, rather than electing a popular leader, as in previous years. The Nationals, however, did perform well in Moorshire, who were voting for the first time, a phenomenon seen often in new expansion territories. The National Party, although it had found itself in coalition following the previous election, was forced to join forces with a major opposition party for the first time, forming a government with the help of the Mercurian Labour Party. Independent England was all but wiped out in this election, which many within Mercury expected following the New Sussex Convention.
