Known for Duke-Apparent of Anglien

Prince Edgard Nathan (Edgard Nathan Carrillo y Waffel-Paine; born 1699 AN) is the Duke-Apparent of Anglien, heir to the ducal title held by his father, Edgard III. The first son of Edgard III and Empress Vadoma I of the Natopians, he spent most of his life managing family estates in Natopia before the Diet of Anglien recognized him as heir in XI.1754 AN. He then chaired the Diet committee that drafted the succession provisions of the Constitution of Anglien.

He is the younger brother of Empress Clara and of Princess Guinevere, and the elder brother of Princes John and Ferdinand.

Early life

Edgard Nathan was born in 1699 AN, the third of five children. He was ten when the Division of the Natopian Empire made his parents Co-Emperors of Western Natopia, and the five children were raised at the Western Natopian court.[1][2] In 1721 AN he attended the wedding of his eldest sister, Adelaide (now Empress Clara), to Crown Prince Uturuncu of Nouvelle Alexandrie, listed among the guests as brother of the bride.[3]

Life in Natopia

As an adult he kept out of public affairs. He managed the family estates in Dos Gardenias and carried out occasional ceremonial duties at Vista de Nada Palace.[4] In 1738 AN he and his two younger brothers were created Knights Commander of the Order of the Royal and Imperial Blood at the 1738 Extraordinary Investiture in Vanie.[5]

Marriage and family

In 1727 AN Edgard Nathan married Aleida Stoutenburg (b. 1703 AN) at Dos Gardenias. Her family were Crandish-speaking Anglians who had settled in Natopia. They have three children: Francis Joseph (b. 1729 AN), who bears the name of his father's grandfather, Francis Joseph IV; Rowena (b. 1732 AN); and Joost (b. 1736 AN).

Duke-Apparent of Anglien

His father was installed as Sovereign Duke in X.1754 AN, after the intervention that ended the occupation of the duchy; Edgard Nathan was then fifty-five.[6] The following month, at its first session in the Palace of the Crown in Johannsessbuurg, the Diet recognized him as Duke-Apparent, and he took the style of Hereditary Duke of Anglien. It was his first public role of any weight.[7][4]

Between 1754 AN and 1759 AN he presided over the Diet's Committee on Succession and the Ducal House. The seat was his by office, but he had no vote, so that the heir would not decide the extent of his own future powers.[7] The committee chose absolute primogeniture over two alternatives, one of which would have added an elective element. The constitution ratified in 1759 AN confirmed him as Duke-Apparent. His precedence rests on the male preference of the old Charter, which applied to his generation alone and ranked him ahead of Clara and Guinevere. From him, the title will pass to his eldest child regardless of sex, which makes his son Francis Joseph next in line.[6][8]

His designation left him outside the Rothborne Settlement of 1758 AN. That settlement gave the titular crowns of Caputia and Hamland to Guinevere, the eldest of Edgard III's children without a designated inheritance, then to her issue, and after them to John and Ferdinand. The exclusion holds those crowns apart from the ducal title of Anglien.[9]

On 24.VII.1760 AN King Sinchi Roca II and Empress Clara were the guests of Edgard III and Edgard Nathan at the Palace of the Crown during the Royal Goodwill Tour of 1760.[10]
