1752 AN Lac Glaceian cantonal census (606,938 in the Anglien canton) |
| First national census of the Free Duchy of Anglien | |
The 1756-1757 Anglien census, conducted by the Census Directorate under the direction of Femke Terhorst and reported against a reference date of 1.IV.1757 AN, was the first comprehensive enumeration of the population of the Free Duchy of Anglien and the first count of any kind in the territory since the 1752 AN Lac Glaceian cantonal census. It recorded a resident population of 1,302,547 across the duchy's expanded territory. The census provides the operational basis for the restitution proceedings of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission of Anglien, for the voter register being compiled for the 1759 constitutional referendum, and for the demographic provisions of the permanent constitutional draft adopted in II.1759 AN.
Background
The 1752 AN cantonal census, the last enumeration under Lac Glaceian administration, recorded 606,938 residents in the Anglien canton. The NKR occupation that followed destroyed or corrupted much of the canton's civil registration, and the Ministry of Territorial Affairs could estimate the post-occupation population of 1755 AN only within a range of 480,000 to 530,000. The 1756 AN incorporation of Eesdehaven with the surrounding northern marches, the Purple Isles (other than Storyäsh), and Arminsburg from Lac Glacei then roughly doubled the population under the duchy's administration, and with it the scale of the count the government required.
The census was the first sustained political fight of Transitional Prime Minister Eduard Vogt's administration. Against pressure from several Crandish bailiwick chairs for a simpler administrative count, Vogt insisted on a methodology that enumerated returnees from the Mala'anje diaspora and the Alexandrian Nazarene community by name and bailiwick of origin, conducting the argument through a series of seven memoranda circulated to the Council of Ministers and the Diet's Committee on Fundamental Rights in I and II.1756 AN. He prevailed, and the named-enumeration methodology became the census's foundation for restitution and registration work.
Organization and method
Fieldwork began in the mainland bailiwicks in 1756 AN and was extended to the incorporated territories in the same program. Enumeration drew on the civil registration records restored under the foundational statutes of 1754 AN, on the land registration program of the Ministry of Territorial Affairs, and on documentary sources cited in the census instructions, including the Bahira registry compiled during the occupation. Results were compiled against a reference date of 1.IV.1757 AN.
Results
The census recorded a resident population of 1,302,547. The median age was 37 years.
Enumeration regions
Results were reported in five enumeration regions.
| Enumeration region | Population (1757 AN) |
|---|---|
| Capital region | 270,000 |
| Eastern districts | 190,500 |
| Interior and southern bailiwicks | 224,500 |
| Purple Isles | 353,171 |
| Northern marches | 264,376 |
| Total | 1,302,547 |
The Northern marches enumeration region includes the Eesdehaven bailiwick, whose 203,171 residents make it the largest single concentration of population in the region.
Communities
| Community | Share of population |
|---|---|
| Crandish | 60.0% |
| Lac Glaceian | 16.0% |
| Anglo-Saksen | 14.0% |
| Crandish-Alexandrian | 4.5% |
| Norse-Crandish | 3.0% |
| Mala'anje | 0.9% |
| Other | 1.8% |
Component shares are independently rounded and exceed 100.0 in sum.
The Crandish share includes the population of incorporated Arminsburg and its environs. The Lac Glaceian category is the census's administrative label for the populations of the incorporated northern and Isles territories and expressly encompasses the Purple Islanders. The Mala'anje share, approximately 11,700 persons against the community's pre-occupation strength of 8,000 to 12,000, reflects the partial return of the diaspora through the resettlement and restitution programs.
Cities
The census recorded eight cities, together accounting for 748,173 residents, about 57 percent of the national total.
| City | Population (1757 AN) | Burgemeester |
|---|---|---|
| Johannsessbuurg | 245,000 | Reinout van der Velde |
| Eesdehaven | 203,171 | Ken Crocker |
| Bergbuurg | 138,000 | Greta Aalders |
| Arminsburg | 71,002 | Wilhelm Drexler |
| Shelsa | 39,000 | Marius Oolders |
| Bahira | 31,000 | Sander Koppe |
| Sundhaven | 12,500 | Joris Kappel |
| Vischreede | 8,500 | Margriet Daalder |
The remaining population, roughly 554,000, lives in rural districts and smaller settlements.
Uses
The census underpins three programs of the transitional period. The restitution work of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission of Anglien drew approximately 620 draft restitution orders from the census program's registration of persons and property. The Census Directorate is compiling the duchy's first voter register from the census returns and the restored civil registers, with preliminary figures placing the eligible adult population at approximately 880,000 for the 1759 referendum. The demographic provisions of the adopted constitutional draft, including the census-proportional delimitation of the 34 single-member constituencies of the enlarged Diet of Anglien, rest on the census's regional results.
