Sundhaven (Crandan: Sundhaven; Anglo-Saksen: Soundhaven) is a port town on the east coast of the Free Duchy of Anglien, situated east of Bergbuurg on the sound separating the Anglien mainland from the Purple Isles. Since the close of the war, the town has served as the principal mainland ferry connection to the Purple Isles, supplementing the longer-established crossings from Eesdehaven and the flight connection via Johannsessbuurg. The name derives from the Crandish sund (sound) and haven (harbor).

History

Sundhaven existed as a small fishing port under Lac Glaceian administration, landing catches for the eastern Anglien market and supporting a community of boat crews and ship's chandlers. The harbor saw no significant development before the NKR insurrection.

During the Natopian intervention in Anglien, Sundhaven lay within the eastern coastal sector struck by the Phase 4 landings of III–IV.1754 AN. Its position opposite the secured Purple Isles, a short crossing from Montrial, made it a practical point of entry for coalition forces moving onto the mainland from the island chain. Once taken, the town was developed by CATO logistics units into a forward supply base, with temporary piers and beach landing facilities handling materiel ferried across the channel from the Purple Isles. The supplies landed at Sundhaven sustained the ground advance on Bergbuurg, which fell in IV.1754 AN, and the later push into the interior. The wartime buildup left Sundhaven with port and landing infrastructure well beyond the capacity of its pre-war fishing harbor. The Council of Ministers' reconstruction program drew on that infrastructure when it designated the town for development as a permanent eastern port.

Geography

Sundhaven occupies a sheltered inlet on Anglien's central-eastern coast, facing the inner channel of the Purple Isles. The crossing from Sundhaven to Montrial is the shortest scheduled ferry route between the mainland and the island chain.

Port of Sundhaven

Main article: Port of Sundhaven

The Port of Sundhaven is the principal mainland ferry terminal for the Purple Isles and, since the war, the focus of a program to develop a major commercial port on Anglien's eastern coast. The naval base and the Anglian Maritime Service remain at Eesdehaven; Sundhaven's role is commercial and passenger traffic.

Work began under the reconstruction program from XII.1754 AN, building on the coalition logistics facilities left from the intervention. The fishing harbor was rebuilt and expanded, and a passenger and vehicle ferry terminal entered regular service in 1755 AN. Later phases have aimed at a larger port able to handle roll-on/roll-off ferries, general cargo, and the duchy's eastern fishing landings. Planned and partly completed works include deepening the harbor approaches, new quays and a roll-on/roll-off berth, a rebuilt passenger terminal, an upgraded coastal road to Bergbuurg, and a branch rail line connecting the port to the inland Anglien network. CATO reconstruction grants fund a large share of the works, which form part of a multi-year effort to grow Sundhaven from a fishing town into a commercial port serving the eastern districts and the islands.

Economy and population

The town's economy combines commercial fishing, the ferry service, and a reconstruction-era construction sector that has expanded with the port works. Its permanent population, estimated at approximately 11,000 in 1756 AN, is predominantly Crandish, with a substantial Anglo-Saksen-speaking community along the coast and a smaller resident fishing population. The port expansion has drawn construction labor to the town and is expected to increase its population over the coming years. Sundhaven returns no separate seat to the Diet of Anglien, voting within the eastern districts bailiwick constituency.
