Montrial is the principal town of the Purple Isles in the Free Duchy of Anglien. It stands on Krerdar, the principal island of the chain, facing the inner channel that separates the isles from the Anglien mainland, and is the seat of the Islands Administration, the hub of the islands' ferry network, and the base of the regional broadcaster AR Purple Isles. The name dates from the Lac Glaceian period and is conventionally derived from the Lac Glaceian mont rial ("royal mount"), after the hill above the harbor.

History

Montrial developed under Lac Glaceian administration as the landing and market town of the island chain. By the eve of the NKR insurrection it held the islands' airfield and a broadcasting facility, and its harbor carried the ferry traffic between the isles, the mainland, and Eesdehaven.

During the insurrection, the Purple Isles came under the authority of Liam Arch, the Nü Krantisk Repüblik's Governing Board member for the isles, with garrisons dispersed across the chain. Coalition forces of the Natopian-led intervention opened the island-hopping campaign of Phase 2 in late XIII.1753 AN, following the fall of Eesdehaven. The first major isle taken was contested; the remaining garrisons folded in sequence, and Montrial fell early in the campaign. Arch was captured at the fall of the town, and the coalition secured the airfield and the broadcasting facility. By the end of I.1754 AN the islands were under coalition control. The broadcasting facility transmitted a Crandish-language information service into NKR-held Anglien, and the forward operating bases established on Montrial and the larger isles became launch points for the Phase 3 air superiority campaign, the airborne seizure of Bergbuurg, and the V.1754 AN landing on the southeastern coast that opened the drive on Shelsa.

After the war the isles passed under de facto Anglian administration. The Islands Administration was established under the Ministry of Territorial Affairs in I.1755 AN, headed by an Islands Commissioner with delegated authority over the island communities, and Montrial became its seat. The regional broadcaster AR Purple Isles began transmitting from the Administration's facility in III.1755 AN. The de jure incorporation of the isles from Lac Glacei followed in 1756 AN, and in the accompanying reorganization Montrial became the seat of a bailiwick of its own.

During the 1756 AN census enrollment, the bailiwick assembly hall at Montrial was one of four bombed in the St. Aldric's Day Surge; the Montrial device was one of the two that detonated as intended, and the four attacks together killed forty-four enrollees and staff. Enrollment across the duchy resumed under Ducal Police Service guard after a nine-day pause. AR Purple Isles maintained its broadcast from Montrial through the seventeen-hour national outage that followed the Surge attack on the Mt. Linde transmitter.

The constitutional draft adopted by the Constitutional Diet in II.1759 AN, scheduled for referendum on 7.VII.1759 AN, retains Montrial as one of the duchy's twelve permanent bailiwicks and accords the Lac Glaceian language administrative status in the Eesdehaven, Montrial, Purple Isles, and Rielrar bailiwicks.

Geography and transport

Montrial stands on Krerdar, the principal island of the Purple Isles; its harbor opens onto the inner channel. The crossing from Sundhaven is the shortest scheduled ferry route between the mainland and the island chain. De Klars Veerdienst operates a daily Johannsessbuurg–Montrial service and a thrice-weekly Eesdehaven–Montrial service along the eastern bay, and the locally based Eilanderlijn runs passenger and cargo services through the chain. Vischreede lies southwest across the strait on the mainland's southern coast.

The harbor (Port of Montrial) handles the ferry traffic and the islands' fishing landings. Montrial City Airport, the islands' airfield, dates from the Lac Glaceian period and was expanded by coalition forces during the intervention.

Administration and institutions

The Islands Administration governs the Purple Isles and the island of Rielrar from Montrial pending the establishment of permanent elected structures. The maritime advisory contingent of the Concord Alliance Military Assistance Mission provides practical administrative support to the Commissioner's office. The town hosts one of the two secondary hearing facilities of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission of Anglien, where maritime and island-community cases are heard on a rotating schedule.

AR Purple Isles broadcasts from the Administration's facility, carrying national Anglienen Rundfunk content alongside fisheries reporting, inter-island news, and Anglo-Saksen-language coverage of the eastern islands; the islands' terrestrial transmitter at Montrial is one of the national network's secondary sites. Eiland Nüs, the fortnightly paper of the island communities, is produced by the Islands Administration and distributed by Anglian Maritime Service vessels to communities without reliable postal access.

Economy and population

The town's economy rests on the ferry trade, fishing, and administration. Eilanderlijn, the islands' ferry operator, is headquartered in Montrial and employs around ninety people. The permanent population, estimated at approximately 7,500 in 1757 AN, is predominantly Purple Islander and Lac Glaceian, with a Crandish administrative population that has grown since the establishment of the Islands Administration and a smaller Anglo-Saksen community with ties to the eastern islands. Montrial returns no separate seat to the Diet of Anglien, voting within the Purple Isles constituency.
