San Lucido ([san lutʃido], Lucidian: Sàntu Lùcitu), officially the Overseas Autonomous Territory of San Lucido and the Eastern Regions (Vegnian: Territorio Autonomo d'Oltremare di San Lucido e delle Regioni Orientali), is a semi-autonomous territory of overseas Vegno in northern Keltia. It is bordered to the north by the Northern Sea, while the closest nations to the east and west are Normark and The Hexarchy respectively, although there are no direct borders. Even to the south, the border is not direct and is shared with Aerla.
The most widely spoken language is Istvanistani, followed by Lucidian. It was only after the occupation of Vegno that Vegnian became widespread, the teaching of which became compulsory in local schools.
History
In 1718 AN, under President Mickey Lange Levati, Vegno began a process of expansion and colonisation of new lands. The first operation carried out by the Vegnese Armed Forces was Operation Flying Cormorant: the troops landed near what is now Goffia and, following several battles against the local resistance, conquered the entire territory. Despite initial obstacles, the annexation was accepted by the majority of the population, also due to the absence of native forms of government.
What was initially known as Colonia (or Keltian Vegno) later became the first overseas territory of Vegno with the approval of the Legge Cattaneo of 1722 AN under President Visciglia. The entire region was granted semi-autonomy that included the establishment of a parliament and the election of a governor, while leaving foreign affairs and defence matters to the mainland. Vegno's right to vote and eligibility for election to the Assemblea Nazionale, however, would not be a subject of debate until 1727 AN.
Geography
The territory of San Lucido is largely flat, with low hills that are more concentrated in the southwest and south of the country. Continuing south of Cammarata and Pandolfia, there are higher elevations that do not fall entirely within the territorial boundaries. San Lucido, despite lacking lakes, is crisscrossed by numerous small rivers that originate from the surrounding mountain ranges. These rivers, fed by melting snow and rainwater, play a crucial role in shaping the landscape and supporting the region's diverse ecosystems. Additionally, the flowing water contributes to the fertile soil, facilitating the growth of riparian vegetation along the riverbanks. These rivers serve as lifelines for both the flora and fauna of San Lucido, sustaining their existence and adding to the scenic beauty of the region's natural environment.
Climate
San Lucido experiences a severely cold subarctic climate, characterized by dry cold winters and mild summers. The region typically receives significant snowfall during the winter months, contributing to the picturesque landscape. Summers in San Lucido are relatively cooler compared to other areas with similar latitudes, providing a pleasant respite from the heat. The subarctic climate of San Lucido creates a unique environment that influences the local flora, fauna, and way of life.
Flora
Evergreen coniferous forests dominate the landscape, with species such as spruce, fir, and pine being prevalent. These trees have needle-like leaves that help them conserve water and withstand the harsh winter conditions. Additionally, deciduous trees like birch and aspen can be found, providing bursts of vibrant colors during the autumn season. The undergrowth consists of hardy shrubs, mosses, and lichens that are resilient to the subarctic climate.
Fauna
The region is home to several mammal species, including moose, caribou, arctic foxes, and snowshoe hares. These animals have evolved thick fur and other adaptations to withstand the cold temperatures and navigate through the snow-covered terrain. Bird species such as snowy owls, ptarmigans, and various species of waterfowl are also found in the region, taking advantage of the diverse habitats provided by the lakes, rivers, and wetlands. The rivers in San Lucido provide habitats for various aquatic species, including fish such as salmon, trout, and grayling.
Politics
The Legge Cattaneo of 1722 AN granted the creation of several local institutions, such as a parliament holding legislative power, renamed the Congresso di San Lucido, and an executive, the government of San Lucido, headed by the governor, the highest office in the territory. The election of the governor is direct, with an electoral law that mimics the national one. The citizens of San Lucido are not yet granted the right to vote in national elections in Vegno, nor the right to run for office in the mainland.
