Kalgachi Defence Force (1649 - 1718)/Protectorate Forces
The Protectorate Forces are the armed forces of Kalgachia's Protectorates, resourced almost entirely from the Kalgachi arms industry but autonomous from the Kalgachi military command chain. There are presently two such forces of note, the Northbloom Dragoons and the Black Brothers.

The Northbloom Dragoons are the standing military force of the Northbloom Protectorate. The unit claims lineage from the 2nd Northern Frontier Division of Minarboria and its three constituent regiments are named for members of the Rossheim and Etzeterra dynasties who have ruled Northbloom since the Minarborian era.
The Northbloom Dragoons are notable for having more horses than people - a consequence of their homeland's isolation in the depths of the Benacian interior and the resultant fragility of access to hydrocarbon fuels in wartime. Those few fuel shipments which do arrive are used to power the Dragoons' small collection of Minarborian-era self-propelled SAM complexes.

HISTORICAL: |
The Black Brothers began as one of the many Laqi warbands emergent from the collapse of Minarboria and by 175 AL they had secured some measure of power within the nascent Republic of Inner Benacia, but found themselves repeatedly browbeaten and humiliated by more powerful factions. Beginning in 210 AL their loyalties began shifting in response to assistance from neighbouring Kalgachia, which sought to utilise them as a buffer against the advance of the Black Legions from Siyacha toward Lepidopterum. With support from the KDF the Black Brothers acquitted themselves decently during the ensuing skirmishes of 218 AL, due mainly to the reformation of their command structure and operational doctrines by their most distinguished commander, Varҳat Ҳazedinov. The Brothers' successes in territorial retention ultimately helped create the conditions for the Slavegate Convention and the establishment of the Upland Confederation under Kalgachi protection.
In accordance with their remit of linear defence in depth, the Black Brothers are noted for operating more field artillery than the KDF itself; the services of these guns are often called upon for the containment of invasive fauna in Lepidopterum and Kalgachia proper.

Initially established as a volunteer cavalry force of Deep Singers and Nezeni equipped with Jackalopes for mounts, Spindlelimb's Regiment was raised for the the Inner Benacian Conflict where it performed the raiding and scouting duties for the Kalgachi Defence Force. Named for Morxen Zagelbrack of the Spindlelimb clade of the Deep Singers, the regiment's volunteers had been inspired to take up arms against the Black Legions by the memories of the Underkeep Massacre and a fervent desire therefore to defend kith and kin from the depredations of Humanist movement which might be expected in the event of an Endsieg victory of the Raspur Pact over Kalgachia. The conflict took its inevitable toll, and of the 2,839 volunteers that rode south less than 700 would attend the sober occasion of the final muster held upon their return. With the Treaty of Gloomburg, a peace unfavourable to Kalgachia which had brought the Unified Governorates into a condominium or joint protectorate of Lepidopterum, the Deep Singers had retreated into the subterranean portions of Lepidopterum whilst the Nezeni had lacked sufficient wherewithal to maintain the jackalope captive breeding programme, meaning that losses sustained during the war were not replaced. The last sighting of Morxen Zagelbrack occurred in 1683 AN, after which he too disappeared into the chthonic realms and left the regiment raised in his name without a leader or patron.
Without sufficient jackalope remounts, the surviving Nezeni members of the regiment, by now operating as little more than a gaggle of partisans, resorted to the use of such horses, mules, and motor vehicles as they could "requisition" from the surface-level communities of the protectorate. Pay became irregular, dependent upon church alms and a subsidy from the central government in Oktavyan. This denuded force was in no position to oppose the Benacian Union Defence Force when Benacia Command elected to garrison Lepidopterum with the Salb IV Aurangzeb.
It would be the Benacian Union that would eventually sponsor the revival of Spindlelimb's Regiment. Having found a pliable Nezeni, Abraxis of the Spindlelimb clade, to serve as "legate", the BUDF garrison in Lepidopterum began recruiting Lach, Siyachers, and collaborator Nezeni, eventually sufficient to establish a regiment of light horse bracketed by attached contingents of commissariat and inspectorate personnel, and a generous allocation of political officers so as to ensure the force's loyalty.
