Born to the Hossani family of diaspora-Babkhan merchants, Abdul was the second son in a family of seven children (three boys, four daughters) born to Majid and Farah Hossein. Initially intended to be apprenticed to the Honourable Company, Abdul was instead obliged to attend to the family business, being traders specialising in black pepper, as well as other spices and herbs, after the loss of his elder brother, Majid Hasan Hossain, during a Bassarid pirate attack on a SATCo convoy in the final months of the War of Lost Brothers. Returned from the ESB School at Teldrin in time for his fifteenth birthday, Abdul learned the profession under the tutelage of his father until the latter's death in 1670 AN from undiagnosed liver cancer elevated him to control of the firm.
