Early Life
Regional Deputy for Santiago, Santander (1693-1700)
Paolo Antonio Aguilar began his political career by winning a seat in the Cortes Regionales de Santander with the Nationalist & Humanist Party in 1693 AN. He was the youngest Deputy ever elected to the Cortes Regionales of Santander at age 22. Despite the initial support from his party, Aguilar's outspoken criticism of their leadership in Santander quickly turned allies into foes. Yet, his charisma and conviction, along with his parentage and lineage, spared him from further political retaliation. Aguilar left the Nationalist & Humanist Party and proceeded to serve as an "independent Deputy to the Regional Cortes caucusing with the Nationalist & Humanist Party", as he said in his party departure statement in 1695 AN.
During his term as Regional Deputy, Aguilar contested two regional elections. Winning large majorities as an independent Regional Deputy, he became known for his unique, grassroots approach to politics, often personally knocking on doors and canvassing for his campaigns. His retail-politics style, coupled with living room-to-living room engagements, endeared him to many. Aguilar's popular appeal, combined with his relentless drive, led to his safe re-elections. During his campaigns, his sister, the notorious celebrity Christina Aguilar, would travel to Santander, and throw large concerts and helping him with fundraisers, further boosting his appeal locally.
Despite his popularity, Aguilar faced significant ostracization within the Cortes Regionales of Santander. His lack of allies in the Cortes Regionales led to denial of vital committee memberships, resulting in his assignment to the Subcommittee on Sewers of the Committee on Sanitation. Undeterred, he pushed for comprehensive planning, management, and maintenance of sewers, earning the nickname "Señor Ordenado." His time in the Cortes Regionales is also marked by the creation of the Regeneracionismo manifesto and the convening of the New Santander Initiative, setting the stage for his future leadership.
He resigned his seat in the Cortes Regionales of Santander to serve as President of the Santiago Development Corporation, primarily due to the support and recommendation by then-Regional Governor of Santander, Ricardo Montalban.
President of the Santiago Development Corporation (1700-1703)
Aguilar's appointment by Regional Governor Ricardo Montalban of Santander in 1700 AN as President of the Santiago Development Corporation (SDC) marked a significant turning point in his political career. The position allowed him to leverage his earlier experience and ideas from his time as a Deputy, including those encapsulated in the Regeneracionismo manifesto. At the helm of the Santiago Development Corporation, Aguilar demonstrated remarkable zeal in aligning the organization's goals with the broader ambitions of Santander's rejuvenation. His focus on planning, infrastructure, and community engagement resonated with his previous work on sewers and sanitation, but on a grander scale. His promotion to President of the SDC further solidified his reputation as a capable and determined leader.
Under Aguilar's leadership, the corporation played a crucial role in implementing various development projects across the Santanderian cities of Isabela, Castellon, Ciudad Real, Cardenas and Santiago, reflecting his commitment to economic revitalization, social organization, and support for education and small businesses across all of Santander.
His work at the Santiago Development Corporation not only showcased his ability to lead large-scale development efforts but also reinforced his public image as a proactive leader committed to the welfare of his constituency, known as Paolo's Pobres (Paolo's Poor). This period in his career served as a crucial stepping stone, paving the way for his eventual rise to the President of the Government of Nouvelle Alexandrie.
Deputy for Santander in the Cortes Federales (1703-1708)
Paolo Antonio Aguilar's political journey began with his election as an independent Deputy of the Federal Assembly for the Region of Santander in the 1703 general elections. Despite running as an independent candidate in a challenging election year, Aguilar's grassroots campaign resonated with the populace of Santander, leading to a stunning victory that immediately catapulted him into the political spotlight. A charismatic speaker and committed advocate for reform, Aguilar quickly established himself as a vocal critic of existing political structures during the campaign, and then later in his job as Deputy of the Federal Assembly. He pursued an agenda focused on economic revitalization, government transparency, and community engagement. Despite his status as an independent, his initiatives often found support across party lines, further enhancing his reputation.
As an independent Deputy, Aguilar became a key vote in the passage of several groundbreaking initiatives advanced by the Social Democratic and Liberal Alliance-Moderate Caucus coalition government ({[AN|1703}}-1708 AN). He was instrumental in supporting legislation aimed at greater worker's protections and strengthening labor laws. Aguilar's commitment to social justice, equity, and humane working conditions resonated with the coalition's objectives, making him a natural ally in these efforts. In addition to his support for social and labor policies, Aguilar demonstrated a keen interest in foreign affairs and defense. He found common ground with the Federal Humanist Party on several vital issues, lending his support to proposals that prioritized national security, international cooperation, and a robust defense strategy.
During his time as an independent Deputy, Aguilar resisted overtures from many established political parties, in particular the Moderate Caucus, maintaining his independent stance until 1708 AN. His ability to navigate complex political waters without formal party backing demonstrated his political acumen and established him as a top recruit for various political parties, causes, and movements. His balanced approach and willingness to work with multiple factions set him apart as a unifying figure and an influential force in Nouvelle Alexandrie's political landscape.
FHP Cabinet Secretary and Deputy (1708-1718)
In 1708 AN, Aguilar announced his decision to join the Federal Humanist Party, a move that surprised many political observers. Appointed as Secretary of the Department for National Mobilisation in Felipe de Almagro's first government as Premier, Aguilar quickly set to work in his new role. His tenure was marked by the aggressive rollout of new technologies in broadcasting, with a focus on expanding access to media in underserved regions of the Federation. He also championed the development of a vibrant domestic media industry that was "humanist, patriotic, vibrant, and creative".
Collaborating closely with the Department of Interior and the Department of Defense, Aguilar oversaw key initiatives aimed at improving the defense and protection of the nation's communications and information systems. His leadership in administering NANII, the New Alexandrian National Information Infrastructure, led to significant advancements in the country's digital landscape. As Secretary, Aguilar's approach to mobilizing communication services, media, and civil society earned him praise for his innovative and effective strategies. He served with distinction, achieving notable successes in fostering collaboration between government agencies, the media industry, and community stakeholders during his term as Secretary.
His continued affiliation with the Federal Humanist Party culminated in his joining the national sector party cadre of the FHP in 1718 AN, receiving the party's nomination for the premiership in that year's general elections.
