Whales Natopian
Whales Natopian is a demographic and cultural identity claimed by Natopian citizens who originated from the Principality of Whales or descend from those displaced by the Natopian Withdrawal from Whales in 1743 AN–1744 AN.
Approximately 720,000 people evacuated to Natopia proper during the withdrawal, resettling primarily in Arboria, Saint Andre, Tapfer, Transegale, and Neridia. The shared experience of displacement fostered a distinct community identity that persisted across generations. The Whales Nationals' Association, founded in Mar Sara in 1744 AN, served as the primary advocacy organization for resettled populations and their descendants.
Whales Natopians maintained cultural practices, dialect features, and community institutions that distinguished them from surrounding populations. The safir community, which resettled in a dedicated cultural zone in Felsbrücken, preserved particularly strong ties to Whales heritage. Census surveys continued to record "Whales Natopian" as a recognized demographic category decades after the withdrawal.
The identity carried political significance, with Whales Natopian voters forming a reliable constituency for parties critical of the Aristarchus government's handling of the territorial exchange.
Population and resettlement
The 1743 AN census recorded 927,330 residents in the Principality of Whales. Following the withdrawal concluded in IV.1744 AN, this population was dispersed as follows:
| Disposition | Population | Percentage |
|---|---|---|
| Resettled in Arboria | 399,847 | 43.12% |
| Resettled in Saint Andre | 200,156 | 21.58% |
| Resettled in Tapfer | 50,234 | 5.42% |
| Resettled in Transegale | 24,891 | 2.68% |
| Resettled in Neridia | 25,117 | 2.71% |
| Subtotal: Resettled in Natopia | 700,245 | 75.51% |
| Remained in Whales, emigrated abroad, or unaccounted | 227,085 | 24.49% |
| Total (1743 AN Whales Census base) | 927,330 | 100.00% |
The "unaccounted" category included those who remained in Whales under Aemilian rule (estimated at 15,000–48,000 depending on source), those who emigrated to third countries, and those whose final disposition was never recorded due to the chaotic final weeks of the evacuation.
