The New Alexandrian general election of 1734 was held from 25.XV.1734 AN to 27.XV.1734 AN to elect members of the Federal Assembly, the lower house of the Cortes Federales. This election, marking the ninth general election since the establishment of the Federation of Nouvelle Alexandrie in 1685 AN, saw a dramatic shift in the political landscape. The election was characterized by a sharp decline in voter turnout, dropping from 82.2% in 1729 AN to 46.8%, reflecting growing disillusionment among the electorate.
The incumbent Federal Consensus Party (FCP), led by Premier Marissa Santini, emerged as the largest party but lost its overall majority. The opposition Federal Humanist Party (FHP) experienced a significant setback, with much of its base staying home, resulting in a loss of 109 seats. This vacuum in the opposition was partially filled by the rise of the Alliance for a Just Nouvelle Alexandrie (AJNA), a coalition comprising the Democratic Socialist Party (DSP), United for Alvelo (UfA), and the Wakara People's Party (WPP), which collectively gained 68 seats.
A notable post-election development was the formation of the Liberty and Prosperity Alliance (LPA), a new center-right/libertarian party created by 39 of the 56 independent deputies elected, influenced by the Liberty Now! Movement and Galilea Montijo in Oportia. This new formation emerged as a significant force in the Federal Assembly, potentially altering the balance of power and coalition dynamics.
The election took place against a backdrop of economic challenges, ongoing regional tensions, and debates over Nouvelle Alexandrie's role within the Raspur Pact. The results reflect a fragmented political landscape, with voters expressing dissatisfaction with the major parties and showing increased support for regional and ideological alternatives. The outcome has set the stage for complex coalition negotiations and potentially significant shifts in New Alexandrian domestic and foreign policy.
Background
Electoral System
Elections in Nouvelle Alexandrie operate on a system of proportional representation, conducted region by region. Voters have the option to choose either from party lists or independent slates that appear on the ballot. The electoral system employs the Sainte-Laguë method, the highest quotient system, for allocating seats in each region's party-list proportional representation. This ensures a more equitable distribution of seats according to vote shares. The legal threshold for any party to gain representation in a given region is 2% of the total votes.
Upon the conclusion of the elections, if a party achieves a majority of seats in the Federal Assembly, it is entitled to form the government. The leader of the winning party then assumes the position of President of the Government. In instances where no party secures an outright majority, resulting in a hung Cortes Federales, the country's governance can proceed in one of two main ways: either through the formation of a coalition government comprised of multiple parties or a minority government that governs with the external support of other parties, all in strict accordance with Nouvelle Alexandrie’s legal framework.
Date of the Election
The deadline for candidate nominations was 1.V.1734 AN, with official political campaigning starting on 2.VIII.1734 AN until polling day on 13.XII.1734 AN. On the day of the election, polling stations across the country will be open from 6:00am local time and close at 10pm local time.
