The Free State of Maraguo, or Maraguo Vrystaat was a briefly independent Micran nation that existed between 1601 and 1604 AN. It was a political entity representing the ethnic Maraguan people, and was established following the loss of control of the government of Calbion after the former suffered heavy losses in the Calbain Independence War.
The Free State claimed all the territory of Calbion, which at that point consisted of the Ynys y Calbain, y Faenor (also named Summerisle), and the Eastern part of Kilkelly. The Maraguan culture was influenced by Shireroth and Batavia, and shows Jasonian and Matbaan influences as well.
Geography and History
The presence of the Maraguan people on the Aeronesian Archipelago is in part a result of the War of Jeremy's Nose. The island was the prize in the war and was claimed by Shireroth. Since the MCS refused to allow Shireroth any further Micran territory, the island was partitioned between it's main allies in the war, Batavia and Interland. Meanwhile, the Calbain tribes united under Llywelyn II, and established the headlands (Penwlad) of Calbion in the central mountain range.
Politically, Maraguo became a part of the Jasonian succesor state of Nelaga until its collapse in early 2013. This collapse led to the proclamation of th Calbain state by several Southbatavian politicians in conjunction with the scattered Calbain people. Jack I, Prince of the Calbain, quickly unified the lands to become primarily Calbain dominated, pushing the Maraguans to the status of second-class citizen. Declaring independence a few years later, major Calbain cities were largely destroyed by Jingdaoese forces. After a period of Chaos and Tribal warfare, the Maraguans claimed control over the entire island, under command of General Jack van Steyn, establishing the Free State of Maraguo. Effectively, their control was mainly limited to the Southern half of the Ynys y Calbain (also Maraguo Island), but due to the post-war chaos and slow rebuilding efforts, Maraguan political control was granted also over the North and East Kilkelly.
The Free State lasted for five AN years, after which the Calbain forces regrouped and Calbion reasserted itself on the islands. The Maraguans retained significant control over the South for several decades after, notably in the city of Enhasa (renamed Llysthur) and surrounding regions.
Current Status
Though small groups of Maraguan separatists still exist, the idea of re-establishing the Free State is in present day not a particularly salient movement. Most ethnic Maraguans fight for the preservation of their cultural heritage within Calbion. Maraguans form the primary voting population for the Regionalist and Minority Faction in the Cynulliad Cenedlaethol. Though Maraguan separatist terrorism was a problem in the early 1620s, the armed wing of Maraguan separatism was disbanded more than a century ago. Through intermarriage and generally low birthrates, the Maraguan population within Calbion has dwindled to around 5%.
