Johannes Alexander Konrad von Pfeffel, Regent of Naudia'Diva since 1721 AN.

Biography

A gentleman of good breeding, albeit with reputed Alexandrian and Thraci ancestors. As a boy of eight years of age, Johannes had been recovering from a bout of measles on the country estates of his father, a bureaucrat of the Permanent Commission, when the Kalirion Fracture occurred in 1671–1672, leaving him stranded in the Lywall Protectorate as it fell under the sway of mutinous forces that would become the Black Legions.

After a stint with the Permanent Commission in Lindstrom, following in his father's footsteps, Johannes had returned to the Unified Governorates in 1689. Not being entirely enamoured of the "dull and conformist" atmosphere in Merensk, he sought and obtained an appointment as a correspondent of the Daily Mail and Telegraph of Eliria, filing columns of an inimitable style which proved popular, if occasionally baffling, with the paper's primarily conservative and Humanist leadership. Prudently he absented himself from Eliria at the onset of the Second Elwynnese Civil War, taking up residence in Shirekeep, which had the great recommendation of being the seat of a neutral party in the conflict. In this way Johannes was fortuitously absent during the Scouring, albeit greatly disquieted by the occurrence, in common with practically everyone alive on the continent during that time.

Entry into Humanism

Bereft of his former employment, and seeing which way the post-nuclear winds were blowing, Johannes duly made his way to Chryse in 1698 AN, in the hopes of gaining some new position in the chaotic early days of the Benacian Union.

By frequenting salons hosted by Ayesha al-Osman, and courting favour in his particular forthright yet self-deprecating way, Johannes sought the introduction that would guarantee his appointment to a well renumerated position. Yet it swiftly became apparent to him that there was to be no advancement for him unless he could put about the impression that he had been on the side of the victors for the entire time.

Attainment of rank with the BUDF

With all due deference to his illustrious character, the regent was neither martially nor nautically minded, although he had hitherto enjoyed a purchased commission in the Maritime Forces of the Benacian Union with the 9th In-Shore Division - something he had been said to treat as an honorary appointment whose main benefit had been to grant him access to a better grade of clubs in Merensk and Chryse.

Regency

How he came to the appointment as regent of the Kingdom of Naudia'Diva does not entirely do credit to the authorities of the Circuit of Jadid Khaz Modan in the Unified Governorates, for the plain fact is that he won it at a game of cards played in the Lycurgus Club of Ardashirshahr. It is quite unlikely however that Lors Bakker-Kalirion would ever be held to account for the distinctly cavalier appointment.

He had however been able to draw the wages of a legate, bolstering his position in the society of the island, upon his arrival, and had been partial to wearing the uniform whilst performing his duties as Regent.

Western Expedition

The need to utilise Naudia'Diva as a base of operations for the Western Expedition went some way towards explaining the otherwise baffling decision to appoint Johannes Alexander Konrad von Pfeffel as officer commanding of the Western Banner Fleet, of which the Task Force and the supporting auxiliary flotillas were the main active components. With his sudden relevancy had come his promotion to the magister's grade and an appointment with onerous and weighty obligations. He was not best pleased by this development, but his predisposition towards bluffing his way through difficult situations saw him accept his new circumstances with every semblance of enthusiasm.
