Simon Katzenfreund was the father of Theodor Katzenfreund. He was born in the Sankt Ludwigshafen, when it was still a small village home to refugees from the Fall of Walstadt (1647–1648). He joined the Bezirkbürgerwehr and later the Kriegskorps Ludwigshafen. He remained in the military until his retirement in 1728, having fought in the Ludwiggian-Monovian War and the Second Ludwiggian-Monovian War.
