The Queen Mother of Nouvelle Alexandrie (Alexandrian: Reine Mère de la Nouvelle Alexandrie; Martino: Reina Madre de Nueva Alejandría; Wechua: Qoya Mama) is the title given to the mother of the reigning King of Nouvelle Alexandrie when that mother is the widow of a previous King. The Queen Mother retains the style "Her Majesty" and ranks immediately after the Queen Consort in the order of precedence.

The position is distinct from that of Queen Dowager, which is the title given to a widowed Queen Consort whose child has not succeeded to the throne. Both titles were formally codified by the Royal Titles, Styles, and Precedence Act, 1750.

Since 1735 AN, the Queen Mother has been Abigail Ayreon-Kalirion, widow of Sinchi Roca I and mother of the reigning monarch Sinchi Roca II. She is the second person to hold the title.

Constitutional position

The title of Queen Mother is not established in the Proclamation of Punta Santiago but derives from royal custom and has been codified by subsequent legislation. Section 6.4 of the Royal Titles, Styles, and Precedence Act, 1750 provides that "upon the death of the King, a Queen Consort becomes 'Her Majesty [name], Queen Mother' if her child has succeeded to the throne, or 'Her Majesty [name], Queen Dowager' if another person has succeeded."

The transition from Queen Consort to Queen Mother occurs automatically upon the death of the King and the accession of her child. No formal ceremony or act of investiture is required. The Queen Mother retains her style of "Her Majesty" for life unless she remarries, in which case she assumes the style appropriate to her new husband's rank.

Precedence

Section 27.1 of the Royal Titles, Styles, and Precedence Act, 1750 establishes that "a Queen Mother or Queen Dowager has precedence immediately after the consort of the reigning Sovereign and before the Crown Prince or Crown Princess." This places the Queen Mother third in the royal order of precedence, after only the King and Queen Consort.

During a Regency, however, Section 28 provides that the Regent's enhanced precedence supersedes normal provisions, including those of the Queen Mother.

Style and form of address

The Queen Mother is styled "Her Majesty [name], Queen Mother of Nouvelle Alexandrie." In formal address, she is addressed as "Your Majesty" and referred to in the third person as "Her Majesty the Queen Mother" or simply "the Queen Mother."

In official documents, the proper designation is "Her Majesty Queen [name], Queen Mother." The abbreviation "HM" may be used in informal contexts.

Role and duties

The Queen Mother holds no constitutional powers but exercises considerable ceremonial and representational functions. By tradition, the Queen Mother:

  • Supports the reigning monarch and the Royal Household in official duties
  • Undertakes public engagements on behalf of the Crown
  • Serves as patron of charitable organizations and cultural institutions
  • Represents the continuity of the monarchy across reigns
  • Provides counsel to the reigning monarch based on her experience as Queen Consort

The Queen Mother maintains her own household and staff, funded through the royal budget. She retains access to royal residences, though typically the principal residence of the reigning sovereign (the Palace of Carranza) is vacated in favor of the new King and Queen Consort.

Residences

Queen Mothers of Nouvelle Alexandrie have traditionally resided at the Palace of Chinchero in Parap, the historic seat of the Wechua monarchy, and La Alborada in Chambéry, Valencia. These residences allow the Queen Mother to maintain an active public role while providing appropriate distance from the principal seat of the reigning monarch at the Palace of Carranza in Cárdenas.

History

Origins

The title of Queen Mother did not exist during the reign of Manco Cápac I, the first King of Nouvelle Alexandrie, as his own mother had died before the establishment of the Federation in 1685 AN. The position was first created in 1718 AN when Manco Cápac I was killed in the 1718 Condor shoot-down incident and was succeeded by his son Sinchi Roca I.

Queen Alexandra (1718-1735)

Queen Alexandra, born a Princess of the House of Carrillo of Alexandria, was the first Queen Mother of Nouvelle Alexandrie. She had served as Queen Consort to Manco Cápac I from the establishment of the Federation in 1685 AN until his death in 1718 AN.

As Queen Mother, Alexandra continued to play an active role in royal ceremonial life. She was particularly involved in promoting cultural exchange between the Alexandrian and Wechua traditions that defined the House of Inti-Carrillo. Her experience as the wife of the founding King provided invaluable continuity during the transition to the reign of Sinchi Roca I.

Queen Alexandra died in 1735 AN, the same year as her son Sinchi Roca I. She had served as Queen Mother for seventeen years.

Queen Abigail (1735-present)

Queen Abigail, born a Princess of Shireroth and descended from Kaiseress Noor, became the second Queen Mother upon the death of her husband Sinchi Roca I on 2.XIV.1735 AN. She had served as Queen Consort since her marriage in 1688 AN, a period spanning nearly five decades.

As Queen Mother, Abigail has maintained close ties with the Ayreon-Kalirion dynasty of Shireroth and has served as an unofficial diplomatic link between Nouvelle Alexandrie and the nations of the broader Ayreon-Kalirion family network. She was present at the wedding of Crown Princess Sayari and Prince Janus in XII.1750 AN, where she participated in ceremonies representing the royal family's continuity across generations.

Queen Abigail was born in 1662 AN, making her 89 years old as of 1751 AN. She resides primarily at the Palace of Chinchero in Parap, where she continues to undertake limited public engagements.

Future considerations

The question of whether a future King of Nouvelle Alexandrie could have a "King Father" in an analogous position has not yet arisen. Under the Succession to the Throne Act, 1700, Princess Sayari is heir apparent and will become the Federation's first Queen Regnant upon her accession. Her husband, Prince Janus, would become Prince Consort rather than King.

Should Princess Sayari predecease her mother Queen Adelaide, and should Adelaide's son Prince Nathan (designated heir to Natopia under the Treaty of Dynastic Separation) be excluded from the New Alexandrian succession, questions regarding Adelaide's status could arise. The Royal Titles, Styles, and Precedence Act, 1750 provides for both Queen Mother and Queen Dowager but does not explicitly address all potential scenarios.

Wechua tradition

In Wechua tradition, the mother of the Sapa Wechua held the honorific Qoya Mama ("Queen Mother" or "Noble Mother"). This position carried significant spiritual and ceremonial importance, particularly in rituals associated with the Faith of Inti. The Queen Mother was considered a link between the reigning Sapa Wechua and his ancestors, embodying the continuity of the royal line.

The incorporation of the Wechua Qoya Mama tradition into the New Alexandrian monarchy has given the position of Queen Mother additional ceremonial significance, particularly in the Wechua Nation regions of the Federation. The Queen Mother participates in annual solar ceremonies at the Temple of the Sun and other Intic observances.
