The Koninklijke Hofbier is a beer brewery in Vinandy. The brewery was founded by William I, Count of Vinandy. The brewery is still owned by the House of Vinandy to this day. In addition to brewing beers, the brewery also owns other beer brands.

The brewery also has several beer halls, including the Hofbierhuis. This beer hall is one of the more famous beer halls in Batavia and from here the annual Bierfest (beer festival) is held.

History

William I, Count of Vinandy, was known as a great beer lover. One day, looking out over the city from the Château des Vinandy, he realized that the city did not have its own brewery. At that time he had to import beer from outside of Vinandy. As a result, he founded the Koninklijke Hofbier, which was then called "Hofbier".

When Leopold II, count of Vinandy, became king of Batavia, the brewery supplied the coronation festival. In the town of Vinandy this celebration was repeated annually, with the fall of Batavia this became a local affair.

During the restoration of Batavia, the brewery was relocated outside the city and expanded. The old location of the brewery has been converted into the Hofbierhuis, complete with a large beer hall and beer spa.

Activities

Own beers

The core activity of the brewery is brewing its own beers. The Vinandy brewery has its own source, malt house and train station. The own beers include:

  • Hofbier Original - 5% (abv) - golden yellow pilsner with slight hop bitterness. The original beer from the Royal Hofbier.
  • Original beer - 3.5% (abv) - characteristic low alcoholic beer with a light taste of caramel. The name refers to the river Oer that flows through the city of Vinandy.
  • Clearbier - 2.0% (abv) - radler consisting of half beer and half lemon lemonade. The bright yellow color caused the brewmaster to name the drink after Clara Sundara Waffel-Paine. But after the divorce of Clara and the king, the beer was renamed "Clearbeer".
  • Hof fest beer - 1.2% (abv) - a table beer specially brewed for the Bierfest.
  • Graaf Willem - 7.5% (abv) - full-bodied, red-brown autumn beer.
  • Hofbier IPA - 7.0% (abv) - slightly bitter and fruity.
