The Inaugural Cheese is a longstanding custom in Nouvelle Alexandrie, dating back to 1693 AN and the election of President of the Government Augustus Strong of the Federal Humanist Party. This tradition, which involves the purchase of a giant 4,000 pound block of cheese by the newly elected Premier for their campaign staff, has evolved into a beloved national event that combines celebration with charity.

History

The tradition began with Augustus Strong's election as President of the Government in the New Alexandrian general elections of 1693 AN, where he ordered a massive block of cheese for his staff at Government House. This spontaneous gesture has since become an essential part of the inaugural celebrations. Over the years, the event has grown in size and significance, with each successive Premier adding their personal touch to the celebration. A key feature of the Inaugural Cheese is its charitable aspect. Leftover cheese is distributed among the homeless in the capital city of Cardenas, symbolizing the Premier's commitment to social welfare. This practice has garnered widespread public support and is seen as a reflection of the government's dedication to addressing social issues.

Memorable Inaugural Cheeses

"Augustus Strong, a man who left as his main legacy... a bloody awful lot of cheese."
—Unknown source.
"Well, I may be lactose intolerant, but you can bet I'll still be the first in line for a slice of that Inaugural Cheese."
—Attributed to Julio Delgado's husband, 1703 AN.
  • In 1703 AN, Julio Delgado, the first Social Democrat Premier elected, carried out the tradition. Delgado, who was known for his progressive policies and commitment to helping the less fortunate, made sure that a significant portion of the cheese was given to the homeless population of Cardenas. He made a point to personally hand out the cheese to the homeless and even went so far as to invite them to a feast at the Government House. He also arranged for the state to provide additional assistance to those in need, such as warm clothing, food, supplies, and blankets.
  • In 1708 AN, Delgado's successor, Felipe de Almagro, went above and beyond to shadow Delgado's Inaugural Cheese in the Federal Humanist Party's return to power. He exceeded expectations by commissioning an even larger 4,500 pound block of cheese and personally delivering it to various shelters and soup kitchens across the city, ensuring that no one in need would be left out. He also arranged for a grand feast to be held at Government House to which all the homeless were invited. De Almagro also arranged for transportation to the event and had live music and entertainment for the guests.
  • In 1725 AN, Premier Paolo Antonio Aguilar of the FHP extended the event to include a public charity festival in Cardenas, where thousands of citizens could partake in the festivities. The festival raised tens of millions towards homelessness and local needs. At this event, he also made it a policy decision to ensure that Inaugural Cheese festivities included providing government and staff time to listen to petitioners and those who ordinarily would not be granted an audience with senior government staff regarding their respective complaints and advocacies.

Expansion and Evolution

By 1726 AN, the Inaugural Cheese had become more than just a staff party. It evolved into a major event attracting media attention and public interest. The cheese, wine, and crackers, traditionally provided by the government, are now accompanied by a variety of local delicacies, showcasing Nouvelle Alexandrie's culinary diversity.

Impact on Nouvelle Alexandrie's Culture

The tradition of the Inaugural Cheese continues to this day, and has become a symbol of the Premier's commitment to helping those in need. The tradition has become an integral part of Nouvelle Alexandrie's political and cultural landscape. It is not only a celebration of a new government but also a testament to the country's values of unity, generosity, and community spirit. The event is eagerly anticipated by citizens and is a significant occasion in the national calendar.

Sponsorship Offers

All the governments of Nouvelle Alexandrie have rejected sponsorship offers from private companies for supplies and food for the Inaugural Cheese, as they believe that this tradition is a symbol of the government's commitment to serve the people and should be financed by the state.
