Huntsland, previously known as Hurmu's District of Moorland, or South Moorland, is the southernmost region of Moorland, becoming part of the Kingdom of Moorland in 1720 after Hurmu left most of its District of Moorland to the Kingdom. The capital of South Moorland is Fort Hunter, though the biggest city is Newhaven. The region is one of the most ethnically diverse areas of Moorland, with a population consisting of Istvanistani, Hurmu, and Martino mixed with that of the Nova English/East Moorlandic people. Though differing in origins, the Wars of the Disinherited brought about a distinct unity among these people as they faced a common enemy. Following the successful conclusion of Operation Southpaw, South Moorland's territory was nearly doubled in size and extended westward to the city of Torcastle. Following the liberation of the west and the subsequent expansion of the region, a plebiscite was held and the name changed from South Moorland to Huntsland, with common sentiment being in keeping closer to the area's old roots in Nova England.
Etymology
Huntsland gained its name mostly due to the early Nova English settlers who first carved a home for themselves out of the densely-forested area. Prior to the Nova English, the region had barely been touched by previous regional powers. Thus when they first entered the area, Huntsland was still a dense old growth forest. Since lands were owned by nobility, Huntsland became a game forest for the elite. Hunting parties were popular in old Nova England, and the area became popular for such outings. Thus the association between the region and hunting stuck, and the moniker of Huntsland became commonplace. The name was officiated by King Josephus with the establishment of a permanent administrative center at Newhaven; this was later moved to the more centralized location of Fort Hunter.
History
The earliest civilization to establish itself in present-day Huntsland was the Principality of Sidona. The Sidonans were crusaders that had been sponsored by the Solomonic Empire of Attera to settle the region and push out the indigenous Sino-Keltian population. Under various warlords, most notably Hazrabian, they established dominion over the region from their stronghold at Crestfalia. They were soon joined by other crusaders from Attera who established the kingdom of Syrah to the north. These crusader states existed in a constant state of flux, waxing and waning in power until, with the collapse of the First Atteran Empire, they ultimately collapsed.
Huntsland would remain unoccupied until the rise of the first Sino-Keltian empire of Chine. While Chine did not last long, it seeded the many Sino-Keltian states that would spring up in later years. It was around this time that the Nova English first arrived at West Grinstead. They briefly took the region in a rapid expansion, but soon lost it once again to the Sino-Keltian state of Xinguo. It would remain in Xinguo's possession for several decades until that empire collapsed, allowing Nova England to once again expand into the region. Except for a few brief intervals under foreign occupiers, the longest being Sirocco, Huntsland would remain exclusively in Nova English hands until the collapse of the kingdom and the creation of the District of Moorland by Hurmu. When Hurmu evacuated the area, the region was transferred to the Kingdom of Moorland, the successor to Nova England, where it would eventually regain its former identity as Huntsland.
